As a kid in the '70s and a teenager in the '80s, I lived in that world of limited entertainment options unfathomable now. Our small town in the hinterlands had an old movie theater and the movies of the day usually made it to the screen, but it might take a month or two. Most of the movies that I watched were ones that I'd catch on one of our half-dozen television channels late at night or on Saturday afternoons. These were often flicks from the '50s and '60s and, at the conclusion of the [...]

>> Based on his remarks in our interview with his band a year ago about logging copious hours jacked into his beloved Japanese 8-track machine and Fruity Loops, it's little surprise that Johnny Foreigner drummer Junior Elvis Washington Laidley has finally revealed a bedroom project, the beats-and-electronics concern Fridge Poetry . The name itself is apt, as Mr. Laidley -- in the spirit of Dntel and The 6ths -- produces the music and then invites vocalists in to complete the tracks. Fridge Poetry 's debut tune, a demo titled "Crash [...]

Sometimes, nostalgia turns out to be a very good thing. A long time ago, The Adventures of Pete & Pete was a totally awesome show. And after watching it again just this afternoon, it turns out it's still totally awesome and a lot deeper in the musically awesome department than we realized at age eight (and we're not just talking the theme music). When discussing the music of Pete & Pete , it all starts with Polaris. The wonderfully '90s theme song "Hey Sandy" was penned by Mark Mulcahy, originally the frontman for Miracle Legion [...]

Wikipedia It's no error that the just-released Obscurities collection of rarities and ephemera came out credited to Stephin Merritt , considering that it drew material from all of many projects such as The Magnetic Fields, Future Bible Heroes, Gothic Archies or The 6ths in addition to works released under his own name. And considering how prolific Merritt is, it's also no surprise that a lot of material that would have qualified for inclusion got left out - gotta keep something in reserve for the multi-volume box set, after all. [...]

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars For some, Stephin Merritt probably ties into their lives at every corner, as he seems to craft brilliant tunes at almost every turn. Yet, despite his work with Magnetic Fields , the 6ths , and various other projects, he remains largely a cult hero to most, and an oddball to dissenters. That being said, fans of his work will probably find endless enjoyment in Obscurities , while other will, sadly, continue to look the other way. [...]

As I often remind Paloma, my childhood was spent in the hinterlands of the Midwest, right past where the flat Earth ends, amidst a lot of corn. Its charm is far more apparent given time and distance. Paloma has heard me recount tales of my years in the wild. There was no MTV because there was no cable. And new music was not easily attainable. Life was often accentuated by imagination out of necessity and, yet, I never had an imaginary friend. The last item came to my attention the other night when I happened across [...]

Words by Rick Moslen We at Draw Us Lines care! You spend summer days watching friends swim, picnic, and tan in the happy sun while you remain at home with a broken heart from a lost relationship crumbled into yesterday’s rotting garbage. Hang in there-you’ll make it through this. To prove our greatest concern, let’s write a prescription for your sad soul: a break-up mix! The only music mix more meaningful than an “I think I really dig you” compilation is an “I think I hate your fucking guts” mix. [...]

Today Tina Fey admirers everywhere shed a single tear. In a recent interview with Vulture , Alec Baldwin unofficially announced the end of a show that has kept America laughing since 2006. "I will tell you one thing," said Baldwin, "And that is our show next year is our last year of the show." According to Baldwin, both he and show creator Tina Fey's contracts are expiring in 2012, and with all of the show's success, it seems as though Fey [...]

I really should have mentioned this before, but if there are any bands out there who want to play Glastonbury, they have until the 5pm on Monday 17th to apply through the Emerging Talent Competition, which can be entered here . I've had a lot of emails this week since my name went on that list. They've all been really nice emails, not an arse amongst them, but the music has been a very long way indeed from the kind of stuff I listen to, so I do find myself wondering a little at my suitability for [...]
Well, the holiday is just about over, and people will soon be getting back to their usual schedules. As you may know, we skipped the S-25 Mix last Sunday to present New Indie Christmas Songs. Now, it's time to return to regular programming. If you're not familiar with this relatively new playlist series, The Sunday 25 [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

After many broken promises and a HUGE bout of procrastination, I have finally slapped a new coat of paint on this baby, rebuilt the transmission, and gassed it up. Now that it's all revved up and ready to go, the final question is: Am I ready to get back on the proverbial road of blogging? Well, the answer is... yes and no. I miss writing. A LOT . And I miss being as passionate about music as I was when I started this blog in 2006. But I don't want to be a music critic, [...]

The 6ths (featuring Katharine Whalen): You You You You You [ Purchase ] Perhaps it's a bit overkill for the theme, but really, I adore this song and it just doesn't get any more You-ier than this. Do I get bonus points? The 6ths are one of Stephen Merritt's (of Magnetic Fields fame) side projects. On this record he has different guest vocalists on each track. This track features Katharine Whalen (of Squirrel Nut Zippers). It's simple and charming, not unlike the Magnetic Field's 69 Love Songs collection, [...]

New remix pack from The Revenge of a Future Classic errr.. classic, Mario Basanov's 'Do You Remember'. Previously featured as the fourth and final fixture of Future Classic's Apres series The Revenge dips in on this twice - once with a phaser-laden sunset-burner of an original mix, and then again in percussive collaboration as 6th Borough Project. But that first 'Drama' remix is the real treat here, don't delay: Mario Basanov - The Revenge Remixes by [...]
