Now into their second decade, L.A. quartet The 88 has pretty much done it all: The foursome of Keith Slettedahl, Adam Merrin, Anthony Zimmitti and Todd O'Keefe have been next-big-things (ah, that Spaceland residency) and major-label shoulda-beens; they've released five full-lengths; they've scored movies; they've been serial contributors to films, TV shows, video games and advertisements ( the "Community" theme , for instance); and they've toured as Ray Davies' backing band — a fitting gig in the minds of many who in the early days likened their music to that of the Kinks. Like long-running guitar pop bands [...]

One of the darkest, strangest up-and-coming MCs out there right now is Haleek Maul. The dude recently dropped the Chrome Lips tape with Supreme Cuts, and Haleek continues to build his sound on this new track. "883 features a really spacious beat, some eerie synths, pitch-shifted voices, and the slightly raspy vocal delivery of Haleek himself. Props to The-Drum on the instrumental, and good work to Merchants of Def on the video.
Haleek Maul is returning focus to his Oxyconteen EP released back in June (download for free at merokrecords.com ), after recently collaborating on the Chrome Lips mixtape with Supreme Cuts. Maul has released a new video for Oxyconteen cut, "883, and you can watch it after the jump. HALEEK MAUL CMJ SHOWS [...]
Here's another sampling of the fine music out your disposal in the Bay Area this weekend! I think that there's something for everyone this week. Thursday, July 19th Ray Davies, The 88 at The Fillmore The Kinks might have been the most influential band in rock. Sure, The Beatles were popular. But The Kinks created [...]

Classic 80s powerhouse vibes from 1988! Big one with Prosumer and the bears! It's cheesy cheapness is perfectly balanced by the dark sleazy bass line which comes to the surface every so often! DOWNLOAD

"what's inside? the demon that wears me?" Exposed to the internet at the young age of 8, the now 15 Haleek Maul's been living in Barbados, nerding up, and soaking up inspirations. They come across in his music, which now that I think about it, is pretty dark and deep for a 15 year-old living on an island. But that's Maul for you who will drop a debut EP Oxyconteen via Merok on June 19th. He also has a full length scheduled for the fall. A friend of mine has been talking quite a bit about [...]

Much has been written about the emergence of the high-school musician, almost to the point that the news of an artists’ age, no matter how young, has slowly become non-news. The world of hip-hop couldn’t be more littered with young things; OF, Spaceghost, ASAP Rocky and Pac Div , (to name just a few), all sport small digits next to their names. Each artist also sports a remarkable level of maturity, not that I’m trying to be patronizing, more that their ability to explore concepts to the same level as their seemingly elderly counter-parts, is at the [...]

Our good friends over at 88 have released some juicy details about this year's Forward Festival programming. It's been confirmed that the five day DC mini-festival, now in its fifth year, will host two label showcases - Jus Ed's Underground Quality and SF-based Frite Nite - as well as a back-to-back DJ set from Detroit legend Rick Wade and his former label mate Dan Bell. Festival goers will also be treated to the bass heavy sounds of Distal and what should be a very special Jeff Mills hybrid Live/DJ/AV performance at U Street Music Hall. As has been the case in [...]

Top of the Thursday to you: ► The 2011 edition of Also I Like to Rock at the Hammer Museum closes with a bang tonight, with sets from the Henry Clay People and Lady Danville . The Henry Clays are working on material for their next album after this spring's very strong "This Is a Desert" EP. Lady Danville, the harmony-rich, UCLA-bred pop trio, just toured with Jack's Mannequin and are plotting the release of their debut album, probably early next year. The free show in the museum’s courtyard kicks off [...]
Former Kinks frontman Ray Davies stopped by Fallon last night to play a reworked version of the early Kinks hit "Till the End of the Day" from his bizarre collaborative effort See My Friends . The track features L.A. rock band The 88 who he brought along for the ride. You can check out "Till the End of the Day" in the video above (via The Audio Perv ). And if you're still feeling nostalgic after the Fallon performance, check out See My Friends to [...]
