Howdy all, Now then, I picked this up somewhere along my internet travels over the past month or so and just haven't stopped playing it. Handclaps! Harmonies! Really complicated guitar bits! And... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit MyWebsite.com for full links, other content, and more! ]]

I now understand why those cute, yet frightening little squirrels like acorns so much. This morning I have found myself enjoying an acorn as well... The Acorn . Their most recent EP was released on December 2, 2006, under the Paper Bag Records label which is the Stars record label as well. A full length album is said to release this coming Fall 2007. Their sound is nothing short of enchantingly melodic. Original. Multiple instruments to pick out of their collection. The attention to detail in each song I have heard so far is just insane. [...]
1. Feist - My Man, My Moon - Bumpbumpbumpbump, la la la la la. Leslie Feist happens to have the voice of an angel and this first single is the showcase for its sexiness. It's a song for driving, dancing, cleaning the kitchen, making out, and air guitar. [from The Reminder (out 5.1)| info ] 2. The Acorn - Brokered Heart - I love this band, I love this record, and I love this song. It's intimate and emotional, acoustic-led with a nice rhythm section solidifying [...]
I posted on Ottowa's The Acorn last year. They don't have a new album out or anything, but since my old site is dead, I figured the band should get a shout out here at the new (and improved?) corner. Tin Fist is a nice, gentle record of indie rock and folky pop. The group is touring their native country, so my many Canadian readers-and I know you're out there-can check them out. Or, if you're close to the border, pop over and give 'em a listen. Taste it here: [...]

Pepon Osorio - My Beating Heart (2002) It's always a delight to be mocked by the grinningly greased maintenance man who has just charged you $300 to repair a windshield wiper. And to watch him diverting his inappropriate laughter to what he uncomfortably asserts to be the ridiculous ($15) amount of sales tax. As you sit down to file your own taxes, the slick young newsman mentions the number [...]

Ottowa, ON The Acorn will start touring around the Canadian countryside starting in March. You can get their albums at Kelp Records . "Spring Thaw" The Acorn on MySpace

1. Menomena - My My - First, let's all thank Barsuk Records for sending me this advance copy of the forthcoming record Friend and Foe (due 1/27/07). Without their help, I wouldn't have this quirkybeautiful collection of songs for another month. I'm pretty sure this song will be around on my best of 2007 lists in another 11 months. [from Friend and Foe | pre-order ] 2. The Acorn - Dents - Yes, I did a piece on the Acorn last week, but [...]
THE ACORN "Tin Fist EP" I'll tell you where I've been later. I've barely had time to catch a breath for the last several weeks, but there's some good stuff in store this winter. For now, enjoy a song from Ottawa's The Acorn, a totally gorgeous new EP that you should immediately seek out. It's been the perfect soundtrack to a warm autumn and even more perfect for these days
1. Blinker the Star - Pretty Pictures - As Idolator recently pointed out, this 1999 album ended up by the wayside and it was a damned shame. This is timeless pop in the vein of Jellyfish. Lofty praise, well deserved. [from August Everywhere | buy ] 2. The Acorn - Blankets - This band's entire catalog is filled with fantastic songs such as this. It begins with a Sufjan-ese intro before morphing into a powerful Anathallo-ish anthem of goodness. [from Blankets | buy ] [...]

It's so great to be able to post about a Canadian band and not have to deal with the inevitable Bryan Adams/Celine Dion jokes. In the last three years, the Canadian indie scene has exploded and Canadian bands are getting a lot of well deserved credit. After the success of their Blankets! EP, the Ottawa group - The Acorn - is finally getting some long overdue attention. Blankets grabbed me right away. Uptempo pop that reminds me fondly of Oui era Sea & Cake , the title track and Plates & Saucers easily [...]
The Acorn is new to me as of yesterday, but I can't stop listening to them. This is likely because they totally rule. A more likely reason is that they totally rock. The most likely reason is that they are totally awesome. Are you picking up what I'm putting down? I hope so. They really remind me of plus/minus with less electronic elements and can go from delicate acoustic to long winters-esque indie power-pop as quick as you can say bob's your uncle. Say it. I dare you. Listen: Spring Thaw [...]

photo by: amfraser.com Ottowa, ON band The Acorn is releasing a new EP entitled Tin Fist . MOKB is a fan , so we're happy to hear it! Full of fantastic melodies, earnest and yearning vocals and layered guitars. There is more and continued experimentation this time around and this band continues to show great promise and growth. Add this one to the best EPs of 2006 for sure [...]

74. The Acorn-Blankets. Ottawa?s own quiet, melodic, complicated shoegazers make music that will enrapt and encapture you. All they gave us this year wasa four-song EP, "Blankets!", but it was enough to get them here. Excellent acoustic arrangements. Blankets-The Acorn . Plates and Saucers-The Acorn . 73. The Long Winters-Putting the Days to Bed. More retro beautiful harmonies Pushover-The Long Winters . 72. Wes McDonald-1:50 in the Furnace. Wes? 2006 release, [...]

It's time again to roll out the Christmas songs, and there are some we love and some we can't stand. Anyone who has worked retail through this season, as Indie Mom has, has a long list in the second category. Here is an MP3 that I am not sure actually IS a Christmas song, even though the word is in the title. I don't exactly know what the French group Envelopes had in mind with this strange little tune, but I like it. You might think those weird noises are too [...]

photo by Aaron McKenzie Fraser Dubbed by some as "Canada's hottest band," the Acorn has finally released their long-awaited 6-song EP, Tin Fist today. Some tracks have already appeared on other blogs (check hype machine ), and the band has also put some MP3s up for download on their page at MySpace . "Brokered Heart" and "Spring Thaw," both with the full band, are more hard-driving rock songs than previous Acorn fare, but others like "Dents," "Feral Chile," and "Heirlooms" continue [...]

The Acorn finally peek out from under the blankets to release a new EP (credit: Aaron Mckenzie Fraser ) The fall flurry of record releases finally winds down this week, and it'll all end with a bang provided by a long-awaited new EP from local heroes The Acorn and the first full-length since 2004 from native experimental sextet As The Poets Affirm , who have now officially dropped the ellipses from the beginning of their name. Just thought you'd like to know, so now you don't have to pause in conversation [...]

"Eff Gadget, I've got a corporation city to run!" Two local album releases on Saturday highlight this week in Ottawa: kindofaltcountry foot-stomp-instigators Department Of Foreign Affairs finally get around to releasing their 3rd album at Babylon (with the added bonus of dandy locals The Soft Disaster and Eastborough ), and upstart conglomerate Jetplanes Of Abraham shill their debut at Zaphod's. The Acorn also supplement the local content this week, and will likely play a good deal of new material [...]

(Ottawa musician Stephen St.Pierre was nice enough to write this little article about the local music for our site. We're proud to present that article in its entirety here. Enjoy. -Cal) I'm currently taking part in an enthralling conversation with a pal of mine who's a former Ottawa resident, currently holed up in Montreal. The consequences that took him from here to there are moot, but there were always underlaying tones of wanting to be a part of the coveted Montreal scene. After exchanging the pleasantries, we got [...]
