ARTIST: The Acorn - [Album] with free mp3 download for the title track from No Ghost. DATE: 06-14-10 REVIEW BY: Bill Adams Mexican architect Luis Barragán was once quoted as saying, "I think that the ideal space must contain elements of magic, serenity, sorcery and mystery." It's an understandable assertion to make; a structure is just that without those things but, with them, it has a story and can mean something to people. [view more]
Here is this week's Music Singles Chart #8. The #1 spot hasn't changed this week. Two new debuts, two hold steady, three risers, three fallers. Decided to add a classic Arcade Fire tune as the double a-sided track. Since its World Cup 2010 right now, it is a great time to use this song while the game is happening. Also check out the music video for The Belle Game's Shoulder & Turn. Check out the chart. This Week Last [...]

Toronto: There are so many shows this week , I had to break this post into two parts. Lets take a look at the shows this weekend. I will be lying down on a beach at a coworkers cottage. Arcade Fire Unless you were living in a cave this week, you will know that the Arcade Fire announced two shows this weekend, one on Friday, one on Saturday. Awesome, right? well, the tickets are only available for purchase on the day of the show, and I believe box office opens at noon, which [...]

A producer as wacky as his name: Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs is the carnivorous reptile born from Oxford, UK. Been a while since I've last heard from him, but for obvious reasons the name stuck deep inside my head. To my surprise, T.E.E.D. has been bust at it in the production room with his latest EP All In Two Sixtys Dancehall . The 4-track release provides something for everyone, from the techy single 'Dipper' to it's garage/dub counterpart 'Blood Pressure' and back around to the poppy, wobbly original 'That One.' T.E.E.D. also did a remix for West London newcomer [...]

(photo credit: Michael Ostermann ) Now these two artists are no new faces to the blogosphere. Already having had some of 2010's most memorable albums, Four Tet and Caribou are quickly becoming household names. To have both of these rule bending artists on one track is, to say the least, mind altering. Caribou takes away the original's angelic attributes and paints a new picture of deepness. The 'Angel Echoes' EP from Four Tet [...]

Since we are always eager to share Canadian talent with you, we must shed some light on a special song that not only was created by Canadians, but then also remixed by Canadians. Here we have Ottawa's The Acorn getting remixed by Midland's indie-kings Born Ruffians , changing their straight-forward "Crossed Wires" into a more subtle (and muddled) tune by adding some synth lines, a change in drum rhythms, and some vocal effects. We prefer this version. Born Ruffians continue to impress. Download audio file (Crossed-Wires-Born-Ruffians-R emix.mp3) DOWNLOAD: [...]
Fellow Canadian indie rockers Born Ruffians have taken their sword to The Acorn's 'Crossed Wires' adding s ynth lines, a change in drum grooves and some weird vocal manipulation. Have a listen below and let us know your thoughts. The Acorn - 'Crossed Lines' [Born Ruffians Remix].

It's hard to distance your opinion of a record when considering its follow-up, often in the same way you can't watch a sequel without your experience of original colouring your experience. The two are linked across the time that divides them and the life experiences of those that make them. As much as I want to talk about No Ghost -the latest record from Ottawa's The Acorn -without comparing it to its predecessor Glory Hope Mountain , I won't be able to explain myself fully without referencing that disc. Glory Hope Mountain was [...]

Without question, Ottawa's most well known folksters have a tough road ahead of them with today's release of No Ghost . Following a critically acclaimed disc is never easy, but following one built from such a tight focus and unique story is damn near impossible. When the band created a collection of songs born from the life of Rolf Klausener's mother, the narrative and emotions were revealed over tribal drumming, picked guitar, marimbas, and ukuleles built to represent her Honduran roots. It was immediate, beautiful [...]

Despite the emotional weight that surrounded Glory Hope Mountain , there was always something joyful about the music and the message contained. The optimistic struggle of adversity found in 'Crooked Legs' seemed to me to sum up its intent, a jumble and tumble of percussion and glockenspiels, and a breathtaking lyric recounting the woes of age, led by the light of a melody. " Will I follow you home again" , they sang on 'Oh Napoleon', and we dutifully followed, soaking up the emotion and love Rolf Klausner so clearly felt for his mother. It was an album that [...]

Everything that I loved about The Acorn's 2007 release, Glory Hope Mountain —the genuine and emotional lyrics; Rolf Klausener's soft, pure and controlled voice; and the rhythmic melodies—is back in the band's latest album, No Ghost . Unlike Glory Hope Mountain , No Ghost is not a concept album and it does not revolve around one or two major theme(s). Thus, this allows the band to explore various styles to create a more diverse sounding album. Songs like "Restoration" and "On The Line" are still very Acorn sounding; but you get some really upbeat tracks [...]
Mercury Prize Winners Klaxons returned this week with the first drop of new material since 2008 - but whilst "Flashover" is a pretty captivating listen, I can't help but think that firstly, this is just more of the same, and secondly, that they've taken the whole "sci-fi" theme a bit seriously, and dragged it out a little long. If the chaotic side of the band is what you're after, then they've excelled and expanded, but if you were hoping that during the two years since Myths of The Near Future was overplayed into obscurity, they'd been honing a revolutionary new sound [...]
