"This is our first and last time in London" Kaizers Orchestra ringleader and founder Janove Ottesen confesses before a seething throng, only to then revert to the safe haven that is his default Norwegian. I needless to say can't even so much as begin to comprehend that last bit, but he seems pleased with himself as he stands proud on the cusp of the stage – a Scandi hybridity of Mike Patton and Alan Smith. The Bryne ensemble, now in its fourteenth year of existence having formed at the dawning of this contemporary millennium, may be [...]

Frank Yang The weather may have been nigh-on dreadful last Thursday night, but it was going to take more than Winter's last gasp to keep Toronto from venturing out to catch the long-awaited return of some colourfully-named Californians been pioneers at melding punk energy and pop sensibilities since adolescence. No, not Green Day at the Air Canada Centre, silly. I'm talking about Redd Kross at The Horseshoe. Though they returned to active duty in 2006 following a decade's hiatus, the Los Angeles-based band's activity has been somewhat sporadic, though it did include a somewhat [...]

Question of semantics for you: if an artist joins in on a cover of his own song, is it still a cover? While at South by Southwest, The Afghan Whigs went into a rocking cover of Usher's Climax and the man himself joined in about half way through the song. The cover starts around the fourteen minute mark of the video. Lead singer Greg Dulli brings the familiar heartache of the original in with the first verse and chorus and then Usher steps out, eliciting lots of screaming and camera phones to pop up. Watch the cover (along with more [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Dan Reilly There are thousands of artists in Austin for SXSW , and I'll be seeing a lot of them. This year, I decided to challenge myself and write about every band I see, no matter how much of their set I caught, or even if I saw/heard them unintentionally. Most of these "reviews" are pieced together from my illegible notebook scribblings, but that's all I've got. [...]

While Friday night everywhere is about going to parties and getting too inebriated to accurately recall the course of the evening, that sense of hedonism always gets heightened when you're at South by Southwest . But while a huge chunk of ATX was chugging $11 beers and hitting that most wacky of tobaccy, Consequence of Sound was indulging in its own solitary drug of choice: music. Based on some of our choices, from a mid-'90s Southern rapper sensation to a riotous English psych-punk band, you might think we were the one's on drugs. But really, we just happened to find [...]

Here's an entry in the Strange Bedfellows canon , SXSW edition: During their headlining set at the Fader Fort last night, The Afghan Whigs were joined on stage by none other than Usher . With the Whigs segueing into a random cover of "Climax", Usher strolls in at the 16-minute mark to replace Dulli's screeching vocals with something more satiny before jumping into sweltering versions of "OMG" and the Whigs’ "Somethin’ Hot" (not to mention a touching shot-out to Lil Wayne ). As Mr. Raymond himself put it, it's all about "having a good time, finding a [...]
We'll have more on this when we post our SXSW roundup for last night, since your entire Stereogum staff was on hand for it, but something strange and amazing happened last night at the FADER Fort. The night's headliners, boozy Ohioan underground legends the Afghan Whigs, were a few songs into a tough and grizzled set when Greg Dulli started singing Usher's "Climax" and, a few seconds later, Usher himself was onstage next to the man, singing. For the rest of the half-hour set, the Afghan Whigs served as Usher's backing band, doing atmospheric and bluesy versions of his songs [...]
