The Wolverton Brothers Genre: Alternative / Post punk / Rock From: Cincinnati, Ohio United States Cincinnati alt rockers The Wolverton Brothers (who as far as I know are not related in anyway let along siblings) have been together for long enough to have been fellow travellers of The Afghan Whigs and released [...]
Last year, Greg Dulli played a set at Seattle's Triple Door Theatre; later this month, the gig is being released as an album . It's coming out on his own Infernal Recordings imprint.

One of our favorite artists, Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs, Twilight Singers, Gutter Twins) has announced the release of his first solo album. It will be a live record entitled Live At Triple Door and will be available October 28th. For the performance, Dulli was joined by the likes of Petra Haden (that dog) and Shawn Smith (Brad).

If it weren't for the fact that they wrote some fine tunes themselves, the Afghan Whigs could have been a really good wedding band. Seriously. Throughout their career, the now defunct band released a ton of cover songs on b-sides and compilations, and all of them were mighty good. When I decided to do a post on the Whigs, I had planned on the usual mix of b-sides and things, but I guess I hadn't realized just how much of their rare catalog was covers. [...]
Song: Honky's Ladder Artist: The Afghan Whigs Album: Black Love Comments: I love the swooping guitar on this song during the chorus. Though it seems to fade over the course of the song. Some people would probably blame it on the fact that I am listening to an MP3. A better guess is that I am going tone deaf. Song: Evil Dick Artist: Body Count Album: Body Count Comments: Leave it to Ice-T to actually deliver some suitable hardcore/ thrash. I bought Ice-T's O.G.- Original Gangster which included [...]
Rumors are circulating that as a result of her obsession with the 1939 musical Wizard of Oz, Amy Winehouse has heavily sampled the "Wicked Witch of the West" on a track for her forthcoming album. An unnamed source close to the singer has said: "[Amy] loves the surreal look, sound and ...

In the other post, Todd was wondering about love for Cincinnati (that's the nasty 'Nati, if you're from Cleveland) -- and on A to Z, our motto is "Ask and ye shall receive." Last night, I found these hilarious clips of Afghan Whigs vocalist Greg Dulli and comic Donal Logue (a.k.a. the dirty cab driver from MTV's '90s ads) hosting 120 Minutes in 1994. Since the 'Whigs were from Cincinnati, these clips fit the Ohio bill. There's a 1996 version too of the pair hosting that's just as funny. [...]

Today is the day to get all nutso about eights, or, maybe to just get nutso, if you have Olympic and/or Jonas Brothers and/or Boredoms-drum-extravaganza fever. (Woe to the person who's suffering from all three.) All the eight-related hoopla got me to thinking about how the eighth track on many an album is a hit-or-miss proposition; particularly on longer albums in the CD era, it serves as something of a midpoint, and albums become unfocused and maybe stick their not-as-good tracks in there. For example: track eight on Appetite For Destruction , for example, is the OK-but-not-great "Think About [...]
Lost - w4m - 22 (Springfield) Reply to: pers-774742589@craigslist.org Date: 2008-07-29, 1:10PM EDT Why did you do this? Why can't you even explain your actions? Why have you let me here all alone? Everyday since you have been gone, after all this hurt and continuous hurt, I have to deal with at least two people (men and women) a day trying to be with me because you are gone. And each time they ask all I can think about is you and I get so terribly [...]

This is mostly a boring life story and analysis here. If that sort of thing bores you, skip this entry! I'm having a ton of fun here with my family in Washington. On my first day here, my uncle (Bret, one of the guys on the blog here!) offered me a chance to rip the collection of CDs he has. So I sort of went through yesterday and checked some stuff out. I grabbed a few CDs. I don't remember how many, but I think it was like 14 bands total. Today he picked out some stuff that [...]
This weekend Sub Pop is celebrating an awesome 20-years in the music business with a HUGE show out in Washington. I can't make it out there for it but I wanted to take a moment to celebrate one of the most important labels of my life-time. I thought about how to do that and decided that a list of the 20 Best Sub Pop Albums of All-Time would be perfect! And so here they are... 20. L7 Smell the

A picture of some blogger in a ball, from his site. Disco. When I was sixteen, the word sent shivers down my spine and conjured up images of tacky knock-off suits and bloody noses. But these days, disco lives and thrives. Just as indie rocked revived Brian Wilson, hip hop samples and silly [...]
