I always hear people saying this year was a bad one in terms of music. Not including some of the fantastic US releases ( Kozalek, J. Tillman, Black Diamond Heavies, Micah P Hinson, the dual Centro-matic/South San Gabriel, Karl Blau , Neil Halstead , and the trend to showcase your Afro-centric influences all come to mind), the bounty from the Canadian scene in '08 was impressive and for me, picking my favorites was a challenging task. While some might think that is a sign of mediocrity, I think it shows the solid collection of albums available this year. [...]

You ever see film of cotton harvests in the old days during the change from man handled mules to the machines who replaced them? Full of clank and clatter, hollerin' and dust. That film was too old, too scratchy, too shaky for a soundtrack but somehow this odd and raw, grimy four piece from Calgary, Alberta, Canada has managed to roll an international harvester around the last couple o' hundred years of hard roots music history to raise and buck a genre busting bale of hay and dust devils into a rockin' hoedown and barbecue of urban hollerin' [...]

web site Purity is music is an increasing rare thing. All too often, bands look for a hot sound, try to replicate it and hope label execs or bloggers eat it up. RIYL or "man it sounds like x plus y" has replaced originality and risk. So when a band can bring something new to the table it's worth your ear and unless you are versed in delta blues, foot stomp percussion and mountain roots, chances are the Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir isn't going to fit nicely into any descriptor you might try and [...]

This month has been very merry merry. August saw so many good releases that I'm having a hard time picking the one that stood out the most, so like the parent of a spoiled kid at a toy store I decided to stop crying about it and let me pick two of my favorites. So I start and end this month's post with the album's that impressed me the most. I even came up with an excuse for picking two this month. See, the albums are like night and day, so I couldn't possibly pick between two polar opposites, because [...]

It feels odd that this is my first festival review on funfunfun. I w ent to Reading for six consecutive years in my teens but since starting this blog my summer's have been barren. I wouldn't have gone to Green Man if it weren't my brother, Joss. He's been working at festivals for the last two summers and with his position at Green Man he was given a +1, which he generously offered to me. I snapped it up in an instant. For his kindness i thought i'd give him, and his girlfriend [...]

The Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir is neither a choir nor are they mountain men. Nope, just 4 dudes from Calgary doing their own take on a pre-WWII delta blues dash Appalachian mountain music sound. As a favor to the band, from this point forward I will avoid any of the following words whilst I talk about them: moonshine, potato sacks, hobo campfire, and caveman. I hope this makes them happy. I am only doing it cause they're from Calgary and us Tampanians (I know, Tampons is more accurate) have already inflicted enough pain, shame and suffering on that particular city [...]

web site :: myspace :: label We are starting to put the finishing touches on the Alberta edition of the Great Canadian Mixtape - tentatively called Alberta: Hoodoo You Think You Are ? - and not to toot our own horns, but we have some good exclusives coming as well as some under appreciated acts from the Energy Province. One that I couldn't continue to sleep on is the Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir , and the name gives you a good idea [...]
