As the school year came to a close in 1984, synchronistic events were occurring that would shape that summer for me and my friends. By that May, all of us had obtained our drivers licenses, giving us the ability to escape the limited boundaries of our small hometown. The fledgling MTV had become available in our area and, as it still hadn't been co-opted by the major labels, those of us that had access to the channel had exposure to acts that we wouldn't hear on the radio. Those of us without MTV [...]

Summer, Summer, Summer...it turns me upside down. Well, not really. I live in the Northeast, as I've said in the past, because I'm not that big on the heat. A lot of folks love the summer weather. Heck, half of them don't even need air conditioning. That's definitely not me. I don't mind a good dip in the ocean, but I'm not going to work that hard to make that happen anymore. Something about all these extra pounds I figure. My friends go to Cape [...]

What screams summer more than 3 and a half minutes of 602s throwback garage rock? Well maybe a few things but none are as satisfying as New York rockers The Postelles summer number 'Sound the Alarms.' Bright, buzzy and full of catchy retro harmonies they will have you tapping your foot and smiling like a fool in no time. The band formed in highschool and chance encounter with Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr.. He was so impressed with their sound that he agreed to work on the Postelles song "123 Stop." Unfortunately it wasn't released for some [...]

A couple weeks back, I was poking around for info on the '80s cult movie Straight To Hell and most of what I found also mentioned another '80s cult movie - Repo Man - mentioned. (Alex Cox directed both movies) My friends and I knew of Repo Man in 1984 when it was released and became an instant cult movie and favorite with midnight crowds. We certainly didn't see it at the time, but, surprisingly, as we were living in Sticksville, we were aware of the movie. [...]
I first became aware of The Alarm in 1984 when I won a contest and received an autographed copy of their album Declaration . It was the Wales based groups first full length album and it was the first time I had ever heard of them. When I played the album for the first time I was immediately hooked. At the same time U2 were becoming huge and friends were pleading with me to jump aboard the U2 bandwagon, which I didn't do because I just couldn't get into their music. Meanwhile I was trying to get my buddies [...]

Paloma and I watched about an hour of that wretched flick Mannequin in which Andrew McCarthy plays a window dresser who becomes amorous with a mannequin...it's dreadful. We happened across it, several months ago, while channel-surfing one morning, and we stopped. It was as though the universe had thrown down the gauntlet and we felt compelled to push ourselves to watch as much as possible. (twisted, yes, but hasn't everyone done this?) But, I've hit Pretty In Pink tonight and I realize that it's difficult for me not to think [...]

The death of Michael Been got my mind on the past this weekend. If you're not familiar with Been, click here to read about it (and listen to a bootleg from The Call). Anyhow, I've always grouped bands like The Call, U2 and The Alarm together because they seemed to try to do the same things musically: big, epic, personal, revealing, with hearts-on-your-sleeve frontmen. As stated earlier, I already posted a 1986 bootleg from The Call here, so I guess it only makes sense that I post one from The Alarm (I'm sure I'll get around to [...]

Like many of the post-punk bands to spring up in the wake of The Clash and U2, The Alarm pounded out revolutionary anthems that boiled over with angst and purposeful sounds. The sound, early on, was all acoustic, but the songs were roaring forces with big meaty choruses. They even refered to their works as recordings of "electric folklore." "68 Guns" and "The Stand" (inspired by the Stephen King
