Been itching for that Lil Wayne "rock" album that probably isn't very rocky at all? Well, it appears it's finally arrived. But I'm not holding my breath til I see it on the shelves. Otherwise it's a pretty dead week. Unless you like The Album Leaf , Blind Man's Colour , Mount Eerie , Passion Pit , Priestess , Rob Zombie or Sole . In which case it's not really a dead week at all. :: The Album Leaf , [...]

Who : Midlake Title : The Courage of Others Label : Bella Union RIYL : Grizzly Bear, Dr. Dog, Department of Eagles Thoughts : If you loved The Trials of Van Occupanther you will undoubtedly herald Midlake's follow-up efforts as one of the best releases of the year when the time comes for those shennanigans. If you're anything like me you enjoyed "Roscoe" and could barely keep your eyes [...]

In an unprecedented move I have changed last week's "pick of the week" from Beach House's Teen Dream to Los Campesinos!' s Romance Is Boring . I've had an opportunity to really listen to Romance Is Boring the last week and I think it is a tremendous album. Also, what's it gonna take to get these kids some "Best New Music?" P4k needs to get a clue! As for this week the new Midlake album, The Courage of Others , will dominate every possible musical [...]

Doron Gild There's a lot of New York in Eyelid Movies , the debut album from the duo of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel known as Phantogram , and while the pair do indeed have Empire State license plates on their cars, they don't hail from a Brooklyn bedsit or East Village walk-up, but the town of Greenwich way upstate - as close to Montreal as it is to Manhattan. But you couldn't tell that from just listening to the record - Its synthetic dream-pop owes a lot to bands [...]
While the decidedly middle-of-the-road mood of A Chorus of Storytellers won't get anyone fired up, the way that mood is constructed is the album's primary appeal. There's something sad and distant about A Chorus of Storytellers. It's a relic of another time, a beautiful bit of otherworldly majesty that belongs in a time when albums were entities of only themselves, when we were more likely to pick it off a rack than click a button to buy it. It's a piece of work that deserves to be heard front to back, and not found on someone's list [...]

photo by check out an absolutely beautiful new song from the album leaf, summer fog , off their upcoming fifth album "a chorus of storytellers." there's something of a my-heart-will-go-on sentiment & sound (in the best of ways!) to the track, w/ the way it sweeps and soars, & we're really loving it. even though it's not summer at all, we've been plunged among wuthering heights up here, & the new song is perfect for a walk through the afternoon fog. "a chorus of storytellers" drops next week, on february 2nd. [...]
As far as my ears are concerned, yesterday was the first major multi-album new music release day of 2010, so it's past time for my annual list of what I'm looking forward to in the months ahead. I've included albums with solid dates, some with ballpark estimates, a few that are mere whispers on the wind. Oh, and a couple of pure fantasies. A boy can dream, can't he?Keep in mind, this is not even

Got a recent tweet announcing an unlikely but great pairing: Phoenix have invited Sea Wolf to join them for a trio of tour dates beginning on January 27th in Reno. Soon after they'll join The Album Leaf for a string of tour dates. Sea Wolf has been riding the wave of "Twilight: New Moon," the hugely successful teen vampire franchise, with their song, "The Violet Hour." In a few weeks, Sea Wolf is packing up and shipping out again with a new single and a lot more touring. With a mere [...]
[ download ] [tweetmeme] Difficult though it may be for fans of The Album Leaf to believe, it has been over a decade since the San Diego post-rock band debuted with their An Orchestrated Rise to Fall LP. Originally a side project for Tristeza guitarist Jimmy LaValle, the group has since fleshed out their own distinctive sound over the course of four full-lengths and twice as many EPs. That sound frequently centers on LaValle's airy guitar melodies, subtle drum machine programming, and the occasional incorporation of found sound [...]

Photography by Tsuru TSURUFOTO on Etsy ! Vote for me (via lots of stars) here Baby & I took the day off to enjoy a wonderful 4 day "stay-cation" at home as we also have Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard Day off as well. I actually was able to, not only sleep soundly last night, but sleep IN, all the way to 8am (a rarity for me). Great way to start off a mini-vacay, eh? Well, being as that we are not in our [...]

So there's this splendid series on HBO (obviously) which is called In Treatment and is about a therapist (Gabriel Byrne) who, well, treats his patients. And at the close of every ep, these startling and bewitching sounds roll in, all tempestuous and stuff. The show's music composer is called Richard Marvin, who also worked on Six Feet Under and, more puzzling, that God-awful Bruce Willis movie Surrogates. However, unless I'm willing to cough up £7.99 of my iTunes vouchers on some high-strung action burble, it appears that you and, more importantly, I am not gonna get to hear these beautiful [...]

To get a sense of what's new with the upcoming February 2 album from Jimmy Lavalle and his band The Album Leaf you only need to look at the title: A Chorus of Storytellers (Sub Pop). After a decade (and four fine albums) of the San Diego composer/multi-instrumentalist 's singular D.I.Y. process of holing up in a studio and creating music on his own, Chorus signals a group effort at work -- and, as Lavalle serving as "conductor" -- an entirely new perspective and approach. "I wanted to name it according to what happened with [...]

Welcome to the first New Music Tuesday of the decade (yay!) and I can't believe I'm talking about another decade, it seems like the '90s just ended in my mind, and this quick ten years has miraculously gone by, but let's hope that the o-tens (is that what we're calling it?) can measure up to the music that exploded on the scene in the last decade. It will be a tough act to follow. But you know what? It's starting out pretty solid. The Besnard Lakes [...]
