The term "indie rock" these days is kind of like a large wet paper bag. You may be able to jam a bunch of stuff in it, but the items involved will probably be damaged if it's the only thing carrying them. Bands as diverse as Bright Eyes, Grizzly Bear, and Modest Mouse have all been given this catch-all title so that some lazy writer in a poorly-lit office could call it a day. So when I'm pressed to speak of Alternate Routes ' music, I could describe it as "indie," and might [...]

Paul Dempsey hit Philadelphia's Kung Fu Necktie last night, as part of his tour with Scattered Trees and the Alternate Routes. A cozy littler bar in Northern Liberties, KFN was well-equipped with a pool table, a decent beer selection, and a Bruce Lee movie appropriately playing on the TV by the bar. A red curtain outlined the stage, which was in back. And even though the crowd was a bit sparse for Dempsey's opening set, heads were still nodding and feet were still tapping, as he tried jokingly to ease the crowd into more of a "Thursday or Friday" kind [...]

Chicago's own Scattered Trees can now add resurrecting the once deceased -well, in music videos at least- to their ever-growing repertoire. Although they aren't joining forces with CoS and letting NYC-area collegiate filmmakers craft the videos like last time , their latest for "Sympathy" is an atmospheric "mini-movie" that reflects the themes of love, loss and redemption found on their heartfelt third album of the same name . Directed by guitarist/keyboardist J.M. Harper, the cinematic video is a haunting and surreal experience with imagery reminiscent of Werner Herzog's tale of a soldier's [...]

Here's some info on this year's NJPAC Alternate Routes Hip-Hop Festival , which goes down April 7th through April 9th, with a ton of talented artists:

Folk rock band The Alternate Routes are coming to Ashland Coffee & Tea this Friday and I am eagerly exited about this piece of news. In 2006, their debut album "Good and Reckless and True" was one of the best albums I heard that year and it came completely out of left field. 20092s "Sucker's Dream" was also an amazing piece of work. So excited to see them perform. Australian group The Kin will be opening the show and from what I've heard these guys will be just as amazing. [...]

When this post is up, I'll officially be back on the east coast. My two months are Stanford were great, but I'm excited to get back to… humidity, an extremely boring town… okay there isn't that much to look forward to until I get back to Princeton. Despite my general apathy about Connecticut as a whole, I thought it might be cool to looks at a few musicians that call Connecticut home. At some point in the future, I plan to look at some musicians I know personally, but for now, I thought I would share some (marginally) larger acts. [...]

While there have been a number of albums that have been absolutely incredible, music is remembered by the songs that top everything else that you go back to time and time again. This year has been no exception. Runner Up, 11 - Empire State Of Mind (Part II) Broken Down - Alicia Keys This was a song that I hadn't heard up until a couple days ago. Keys is not an artist who usually pops up [...]

11 - Yeah Ghost , Zero 7 Zero 7 is back with their fourth album, Yeah Ghost . While I still think that their best album is their first, [...]

Last night, I ventured out once again to the Higher Ground music hall in South Burlington, Vermont, where Carbon Leaf came out with another CYA favorite, The Alternate Routes played a fantastic concert. I've seen the Alternate Routes a couple of times now, and really had a lot of fun seeing them again. Once again, they played a fantastic set of music, mainly songs from their new album, [...]

So, it's getting warmer, and as such, it's high time to get back to some fun drives. Here's some of what I've been listening to on the occassions that I've been out and about on the road thus far. These songs in paticular are forever associated with the coming warmer weather. All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix [...]
The Alternate Route's sophomore album kicks off the deck as a strong album, one that amply follows up their first release, 2007's Good and Wreckless and True , which I really enjoyed. The group has been around for a couple of years, and broke into the music scene with an energetic and solid rock sound that, while not totally, completely orginal, was resfreshing and easy to get into. This second album, titled A Sucker's Dream , represents not so much a depatrure from the sound of their first album, but more a refinement throughout, from the lyrics to [...]

Our friends over at Vanguard Records clued us into a new release that we missed on Tuesday and have given us the opportunity to share a bit of it with you. The Alternate Routes released A Sucker's Dream this week and I have a feeling that it's right up the alley of most of our readership here. Below is the video for "The Future's Nothing New" and below that is a link to download an mp3 of "All That I See" You can catch The Alternate Routes on tour with Matt Wertz through mid-March. Wertz is usually a [...]
