Yesterday was the legendary decision declaring California's Prop 8 ban on gay marriage unconstitutional. People here in Los Angeles are celebrating it in different ways. Some are going to parades, some are eating vegetables longer than 23. I decided to celebrate by doing the most gay thing I could think of, listen to the entire Aluminum Group discography. While going through all the their songs I had (and supplementing them with a few on the Hype Machine), I had forgotten that they were on the "Reproductions: Songs of The Human League" compilation. Check out this fantastic [...]
Seen and Heard: Music Video Showcase Friday at 8pm at Chicago Filmmakers is Seen and Heard: Music Video Showcase. Among the bands with video showing are Aluminum Group, Animate Objects, Bin Laden Blowin Up, Boduf Songs, Canasta, Judson Claiborne, Double...

The Aluminum Group - The Fossil That You Call Your Lover

Here's a silly question. Seeing as it's that time of year when people love to throw parties, what do you prefer to bring, an appetizer or dessert? I took an informal poll of my family at dinner last night, and my youngest daughter said, "dessert, because it's funner." My son said, "appetizer, because you can just buy a bag of chips." My husband went with appetizer, too, although he didn't have an especially noteworthy reason. I'm kind of torn. Desserts are easier--and funner--as you can [...]

Today, let's be thankful for good pop music with these lil' treasures... Aluminum Group -- Sugar & Promises -- Aluminum Group's MySpace Ivy -- I Hate_December -- Ivy's MySpace Air Miami -- Airplane_Rider -- Air Miami via Wikipedia [...]

This week on the show, some rocking, young gentlemen. We've got tracks from the new garage rock spectacular, Gentlemen Jesse and His Men : the new full-length LP from the band with the same name. We've also got some slightly lo-fi acoustic pop from the prolific and charismatic Herman Dune. He's got a new album called Next Year In Zion , and it's definitely worth checking out if you're into the Velvet Underground, Jeffery Lewis, the Moldy Peaches, and all that other music being called "anti-folk." Somehow, the likes of Neu!, Larrytta, [...]
The jerky, sugar-rush rockers of Born Ruffians invite you to the farmhouse, where there are not cluster flies, alas, but there are plenty of animals at the ready to intrude upon your cooking sessions. This is where you can Like Jamie Lidell's Jim, a sort of cute opening premise takes a darker turn in Act III, but it's still cute and infectiously poppy, because that's just how Born Ruffians do. In fact you might even say it was an Animal Farm , if you were into stretching your Orwellian references. Luckily, we aren't.
Chicago lounge-pop vets John and Frank Navin deliver plenty of cool, but not enough feeling, on their sixth album.

I'm a sucker for album art and the way a CD is presented. When I receive a promo that removes the album art (like this one), it doesn't receive the amount of attention a CD with a nicely designed insert does. I usually toss them in the trash, but the gal who sent this to me is nice, so I'll plug it and then throw it in the trash. Is this clearly another example that whatever is wrong in my head needs a quarter-clockwise turn or can someone out there relate?! /rant [...]
Seventh LP from the Navin Brothers continues their streak of sinister easy listening excellence.

Here is a gift for the 7th day of Christmas....My first (and hopefully annual, and preferably earlier in the season) My Space Holiday Collection Vol. 1. As you may know, I have compiled several My Space tracks. Some of them may be on EPs, CDs, LPs, or online only. As far as I know, these are all online only...I don't recall seeing record names on a lot of these when I found them. You may download the tracks individually or they are zipped for your convenience, along with CD artwork in case you want to [...]
