As of today two of Ireland's best indie bands Oppenheimer and Angel Pier have called it a day. There's no information yet as to the reason's of Angel Pier's demise but there's a decent report on State.ie about Oppenheimer. http://www.state.ie/2009/12/ne ws/oppenheimer-are-no-more/ Angel Pier's Sprite is such a great track from 2008. Here is Oppenheimer playing in the Olympia last week!

While the wait for their debut album has been interminable the clues left by their releases so far indicate that something special could be on the way. 2009 has seen Angel Pier headline Whelan's, play Oxygen and release a superb double a-sided 7-inch. And that's where you'll find 'Align The Seas', a torch song that is constructed so precisely you could remove a note and the whole thing would fall apart. The delicate structure is glued together by Darragh Nolan's pre, during and post falsetto but like with all Angel Pier compositions the shiny instrumental dynamics manage to scoop plenty [...]

It does seem in Ireland that this year's Halloween is being celebrated like never before and I'm loving it. Here's an Irish Halloween mixtape! Some of the tunes are technically not written about Halloween but are included for atmospheric qualities. 1. And So I Watch You From Afar - Set Guitars To Kill 2. Ham Sandwich - Running Up That Hill [Live] 3. Pearse McGloughlin [...]

For the last night despite my desire to see bands like Funeral Suits, Super Extra Bonus Party and Ham Sandwich I decided to stay in The Button Factory for the last night of HWCHs. Pearse McGloughlan Pearse was accompanied by Sean Lynch on Mandolin and played a great set of songs from his debut album 'Busy Whisper'. It was a small but appreciative audience for Pearse's music. Ultan Conlon Ultan and his band of excellent musicians played a brilliant set from [...]

So one of Ireland's top up and comers effortlessly move into phase two and in the process add the definite article to their moniker. The Angel Pier have the wherewithal to be truly spectacular, for the moment we'll have to make do with the truly excellent. 'Align The Seas' (a 7inch on real vinyl) will be launched in Whelan's this Friday and sees the 4-piece reappear with a pair of fully-fledged anthems. The a-side and title track has a pulsing addictive rhythm and that special trick where songwriter Darragh Nolan orchestrates lumpen throats. 'Belong' is the epic flip, [...]

Another nod to CLuas.com for including the two JJ72 albums in their top 50. To me neither album was especially brilliant but each had some great tracks and Mark Greaney's voice is superb. They also released as b-sides some amazing covers such as Wicked Game and this one here: Pet Shop Boy's - It's A Sin! JJ72 - It's A Sin Concerto for Constantine is three Dubliners: singer and guitarist Mark Greaney (formerly JJ72's frontman and songwriter), bassist Gavin Fox (formerly of Turn, Idlewild and Vega4),and drummer Binzer (formerly [...]

We interviewed Angel Pier last March and since then lead singer Darragh Nolan has been our main insight to the mind of an indie rocker. On top of that, the music from the Ireland-based ensemble pleases us. The group just finished recording a pair of tracks and plan to release an album this coming Fall. We got an opportunity to pick Darragh's brain regarding the recording process and the direction the group is heading. MUF : Seems like you changed a little bit. Darragh [...]
