Like any other social media platform, Instagram can be stupid. So much of Instagram is crowded with shots of Florentine benedicts from brunch, blurry selfies, Rich Kids of Instagram and millions and billions and trillions of cats. Most people’s crop game is awful, their comment game is even worse, and their frivolous use of the focus tool is out of control. Some people, if you can even believe it, still use the Kelvin filter.

Graphics By Madeline Rosemurgy Not even a perpetual torrent of rain could extinguish the good vibes at the inaugural Shaky Knees Music Festival in Atlanta over the weekend. The first day of the two-day festival (Saturday) saw crowds build to around 8,000 by the end of the long, messy day, and by Sunday afternoon, the festival sold out. The 28 bands that played the festival were greeted by over 14,000 keyed up fans all within the confines of the shiny (not anymore), new Historic Old Fourth Ward Park and the adjoining Masquerade Music [...]

This weekend marks the inaugural run for Atlanta's brand new Shaky Knees Festival , and I'm stoked to be there to experience it! The two day festival will be held in a newly completed park next to a prominent Atlanta music venue, The Masquerade . The schedule and lineup is a bit light compared to other festival heavy-hitters ( Bonnaroo, Sasquatch, Hangout ), but for a first year festival, the lineup is pretty amazing. The schedule is 12-11 Saturday, May 4, and 12-10 Sunday, May 5. Nearly every act scheduled to [...]

We once asked the question, "What's the matter with Berkeley?" , attempting to figure out why the city of Berkeley lacks suitable rock venues. While this is still worthy of discussion, we can take comfort in the fact that the UC Berkeley campus fights the good fight by continuing to provide a fantastic setting for live music, open to anyone and everyone. Here's a list of upcoming shows at Cal (all shows are free and open to the public): Saturday, April 20th (Cal Day): The Antlers, 5:00pm, Memorial Glade [...]

The indie folk newcomers REDFOOT from New York City reveal a new music video for their haunting single Make It Quick. For the track the four piece worked together with Darby Cicci from THE ANTLERS who helped shaping this experimental, but also catchy and melancholic sound. BTW emeriti PVT recently released their fourth studio album Homosapien , which included the droning track " Nightfall ." Here, Brooklyn band the Antlers give the Aussie trio's track a kind of narcotic-addled sheen, taking their current underwater-inspired output and rubbing it all over the original. Check it out below. Indie, eh? Not since the turn of the millennium has it stood for its true meaning of independent, its reputation instead sullied by the disreputable nonsenses of the exclusively British likes of Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Courteeners etc. ad infinitum. It's a grave shame, not least as what was once a blanket term has been bastardised by the dirtiest of explicit connotations. Though in amongst all the turgid, and in many respects cheapskate sonic templates – not to mention the lazy categorisation itself – are glimpses of brilliance; of innovation, and so too relative independence. That [...]

The Antlers at Glasslands in 2012 ( more by David Andrako ) The Antlers haven't been up to too much lately, but they do have a few upcoming shows scheduled this year, including a hometown show happening on June 15 at Le Poisson Rouge . It's in celebration of the venue's fifth anniversary and is also a very intimate setting for the band so tickets will presumably go pretty fast. Tickets for the LPR show go on sale [...]

Last year the skewed-pop group Parenthetical Girls released the airy single Curtains, registering as what the Cars' "Who's Gonna Take You Home" was produced by Brian Eno. Fellow off-kilter beauty merchants the Antlers got their hands on it for a remix, and their slightly more populist streak shines in this version, which wrangles the female vocal from the original's final minute and builds it into the track's lead. It's pretty either way you slice it, and thanks to this blog post, you do not have to choose. Parenthetical Girls, Antlers, anon: Read More...

Bands get their names from different sources and these days randomness seems to reign when choosing one. It’s common to not even ask yourself any more where a band’s name comes from, and sometimes funny lists do the job of ranking the most bizarre . Well, I wouldn't say that Cowboy Indian Bear should be on one of those lists, but at first glance it did make me think "why this triad?" All was forgotten after the first few seconds of listening to “Does Anybody See You Out?”, with its steady bass line followed [...]
