Tricky's tenth studio album is upon us, and it will be called False Idols . Enlisting artists like Antlers' Peter Silberman, Fifi Rong and Nneka, it looks like the innovative trip-hop producer will take his sound to uncharted territories. His first single is called "Nothing's Changed", and it sports a vocal feature from Francesca Belmonte. Sonically, it seems like Tricky is more focused than ever. The production is on-point, setting the tone for what is shaping up to be a rather dark full-length. [ via ] Tricky's False Idols is due out May 28 via !K7. Below is a [...]

Mixtape: Fourteen Songs about Love for Valentine's Day (Podcast #300) In case you've managed to avoid this news until now, February 14th is Valentine's Day, the greeting card industry holiday that can compel even the least romantic to confront the topic of love. Over the past few years, plenty of our favorite indie rockers have explored the excitement and complications of love in terrific songs. Here, we've collected fourteen tracks about love's many facets, including the swooning romanticism of Real Estate , Cass McCombs , and [...]
Shuffling on over with debonair grace, New York four-piece Redfoot's Make It Quick slides woozily around a lyrical refrain of "I'll crash and burn/ But I will return" as the repressed guitars beyond smoulder with guile. The troupe are as though a transatlantic Suede stained with yet more wistful melodrama, and whereas Brett Anderson et al. recently arose a phoenix from the flames destined to singe itself on an Icarian sun of self-indulgence, the only viable way appears to be up for Romi Dyron, Alex Topornycky, Kurt Gottwald and Chris Yetner. Abetted by Darby Cicci of The Antlers, Make It [...]

Chris ' Top Lists of 2012 This was a good year for music. It usually always is. Mostly, the more one pays attention to new material, the more they think, “This was a good year for music”. It’s safe to say that a lot of the bands I adored back in college took a break this year (save a few, see below), which left a power vacuum in my heart. This year I made a point not to be a jackass in my review, let’s see if it works. [...]

Bir yara izinin asla çirkin olmadığı konusunda bana katılmanızı rica ediyorum. Yara izini yapanlar bunun aksini düşünmenizi isterler. Ama siz ve ben, onlara kafa tutma konusunda bir anlaşma yapmalıyız. Çünkü, tecrübelerime dayanarak söylüyorum, ölürken yara izi olmaz. Yara izi " Ben kurtuldum ," demektir. Our good friend and frequent TWJ contributor Cole has the good fortune to live in New York City, and the even greater fortune to attend a remarkable amount of concerts throughout the five boroughs every year. Since this year was filled with enjoyable shows, he decided to run down a list of his favorites he [...]

I was waiting to see if the world ended, before I posted this - thought it could save me some time - but here we still sit. It's Christmas morning, everyone's already done a list of some sort and I was hoping the list-y dust would settle before I posted mine. Happy Yule to y'all! The last half of this year for me sucked donkeys for a variety of intense, life-changing personal reasons. Admittedly, my output on BSR took a bit of a hit while I was struggling with real life. But in 2012 music was here, there [...]

ILLUSTRATION BY LYDIA CONKLIN Whether a result of the growth in music’s DIY culture, a reaction to our declining attention span or simply a method to explore new sonic territory, EPs (and at times, 73) have increasingly become the bread and butter of almost all new projects. A tightly packed unit of songs, EPs allow musicians the opportunity to present a cohesive, thematic tone - a method sometimes preferable to the sprawl of a full-length release. They can also act as a way to showcase a few songs with starkly different styles, acting as a sort of appetizer [...]

The Antlers released a reinterpretation of the song "No Widows", which appeared on their 2011 album Burst Apart . The reworking, formally titled "Empty Castles (No Widows Refracted)", cellist Brent Arnold stripped the track and took it a more orchestral directions will absolutely stunning results with even more emotion than the original. You can download it below. MP3: The Antlers - Empty Castles (No Widows Refracted)

Here's a cool rework (saying "remix" feels weird - you'll understand when you press play) of the Antlers' Burst Apart highlight "No Widows" by the cellist Brent Arnold, who's calling his revision "Empty Windows." He takes the original's vocal line and some other elements and packs in layer upon layer of soaring, sweeping, emotive cellos. Apparently some of these cellos were recorded in a library in a castle, which is pretty appropriate - the whole thing sounds at once baroque and thoroughly modern. Check it out.
