Best of 2012 continued. Fave covers are up, and top tracks and albums will be posted this week. Keeping the albums separate from the EPs again this year, because how can you judge a 5 song EP to 17 song album? And let me say, for the millionth time, more EPs please! Perfect introduction to a new band, perfect release that keeps me happy between full-lengths from a favorite band. So thank you to these bands/artists for indulging my craze by putting out some excellent EPs. Honorable Mentions: [...]

There is nothing here in the vein of 'I Don't Want Love' – the slightly MOR-ish push for mainstream recognition from the otherwise flawless Burst Apart album – instead there is only a leaner, more perfectly realised sample of The Antlers' musical manifesto. Closer 'Zelda', with its descending chords and keyboard washes, bookends the EP perfectly. After building to a zenith, the track strips down to the bare bones of the arrangement and quietly excuses itself before slipping beneath the waves. Silberman et al must be aware that they have created an EP of transcendent [...]

Grizzly Bear , The Antlers , and Cults got together (as well as Sleigh Bells - but I had to believe before their set) to play a special benefit show for Hurricane Sandy relief. All played short but effective sets that featured the best of their material, set to please all of those in attendance. It was an incredible lineup that put on a memorable show that went towards a good cause. What's not to like? Catch galleries of all three bands below. Grizzly Bear: [...]

"Everything I made is of course quite different than the original"

The Antlers have gifted an orchestral re-imagination of their track "No Widows" from last year’s Top Star-earning Burst Apart . "Empty Castles (No Widows refracted)" was created by cellist Brent Arnold, who says of the track: “I knew I wanted to work with this track as soon as I heard it. The lyrics really haunted me. I recorded many of the cellos in a library in a castle in Burgundy… no joke! I had in mind a kind of rolling, pulsing feeling, rising and falling. Everything I made is of course [...]
As a thank you to fans, the Antlers just posted a pretty new version of Burst Apart 's "No Windows" by Brent Arnold , a friend of theirs who took Peter Silberman's vocal stems and set them to string arrangements he "recorded in a library in a castle in Burgundy."

Suggested NYC Concerts The Best Indie Shows Hand-picked Each Week Photo credit: Shervin It's already Hanukkah and nearly time for Christmas, which means holiday parties and time off from school and work in the very near future. In some cities, I'd imagine that this could be a slower time of year for music. Not as many bands are on tour so you don't get the big names, right? Well, this is New York City so that doesn't [...]

It’s easy to hate New Year’s because it forces you to reflect on time passing—and personally 2012 was the best and worst of times. Musically, I started something a little different this year—I kept month-by-month playlist diaries on Spotify. I created a new playlist on the first of every month and dumped every track I felt the urge to listen to intentionally onto them (nothing casually overheard). What came out was a chronicled examination of my own self-indulgence, struggles and parties. The majority of the music wasn’t new, but here are my clear favorites released this year, in order of [...]

Pavla Kopecna In mentioning yesterday that winning the Mercury Prize allowed Alt-J to graduate from playing Wrongbar in September to playing The Phoenix in March, we can also scientifically see what only getting nominated to the shortlist gets you. Django Django , who were shortlisted on the strength of their self-titled debut , also played Wrongbar in late September and have also just scheduled a Spring tour that brings them back to town in March - March 12, specifically, and at The Opera House. So based on the capacities of [...]

Baltimore's Beach House continue to impress with each and every release. This year's Bloom might be their best yet. It's definitely my personal favorite from the duo and one my top 10 favorite albums of 2012, which makes it incredibly difficult to pick one favorite. Bloom is one of those records you can listen to start to finish, over and over again. "Myth" was my first taste of Bloom and it's an incredible leadoff track. "Lazulli" is simply magical...or what I like to describe [...]
