Piper Ferguson I suspect most of your inboxes aren't reminding you of it quite as insistently as mine is, but the fact is that the CMJ Music Marathon kicks off in New York next week. Retirement or no , heading down is always on the table because hey - week/end in New York that I can write off. What's not to like? Unfortunately, that's not happening this year because of work and other logistics, and it's especially unfortunate because this year I've teamed up with the good folks at Hype Machine and some [...]
The stunningly gorgeous indie dream-pop sounds of New York's The Dig will fill Kobo on Thursday night as the band hits Columbus as part of their Rocktober tour with Portland's The We Shared Milk . The Dig, whose sound falls somewhere between Vampire Weekend and The Antlers, have shared stages with the likes of The Walkmen, Portugal the Man, and Scott Lucas & The Married Men. This is a Fireball Whisky Presents show meaning Fireball Whisky shots are only $3 all [...]

Largely the vision of former Antlers bassist Justin Stivers, Passenger Peru rides Stivers bass into more experimental areas than Antlers usual fare. Stivers teamed up with Justin Gonzalez to bring Passenger Peru’s self-titled album into existence. From the start of the album, you get the impression that Stivers attempted to bring the experimental side of Animal Collective together with the pop roots of 60’s and 70’s southern California rock. I won’t pin it all on the Beach Boys, but you get the idea. Stivers manages to do this pretty convincingly on tracks like “Heavy Drugs.” [...]

Sound Samples is a SOTO feature meant to provide some insight on what inspired and/or influenced an artist's latest release. Today's entry comes from Austin-based instrumental act The Calm Blue Sea . The band is all set to put out their new full length, Arrivals & Departures , on October 9 via Modern Outsider . This Saturday they're having a record release show at Red 7 . Get more information on The Calm Blue Sea here . We each come at our music from such a drastically different perspective and pull [...]
The Antlers released the 'Undersea' EP in July, and here is a remix of a song off the EP, for 'Crest'. Surprisingly, it's by Tricky and if the story from RCRD LBL is correct, they met in Lisbon over a malfunctioning coffee press and then came up with the idea of Tricky reimagining this song. Listen to and download the track below.
Bi-coastal outfit Port St. Willow sails into Union Transfer tonight for a show with The Antlers. Excelling in ethereal, ambient music, Port St. Willow’s Nick Principe has recorded two albums – 2010’s Even//Wasteland and 2011’s full-length Holiday. Each record traces Principe’s memories of childhood and cloaks them in a heavy fog of white noise and ... Continue reading

The Antlers are playing Union Transfer tonight in Philly. Fuck you, Restaurant Week. I'd much rather be listening to the depressing sounds of The Antlers than running around for dickheads who never been to a restaurant before. The Brooklyn trio recently released their new EP entitled Undersea , but I would be more interested in hearing some of the classics off Hospice like "Kettering" and this joint, "Bear". Enjoy the show, you lucky bastards. THE ANTLERS - BEAR
frontpage_features: Saturday night at Pittsburgh's Altar Bar got started with support for The Antlers by super-mellow ambient music makers Port St. Willow . [...]
It's Friday, which means another installment of our regular roundup of downloadable MP3 goodness from around the web. This week it's remix central, with another excellent Tame Impala remix from Canyons and a similarly worthy Antlers remix from Tricky, of all people, along with Laurel Halo vs. Lianne Le Havas and Peaking Lights vs. TEEN. Elsewhere, there's the return of Crystal Castles and Jason Molina, fine new tracks from Beacon and Guards, and plentiful other goodness. Since all this action costs precisely nothing, what are you waiting for? All the download links await after the jump. [...]

I can vividly recall excitedly approaching what is now another relatively soulless O2 down around Shepherd's Bush on two separate, although here associated occasions. Once was to finally catch Bristol trip hop progenitor Tricky , whilst the other was to observe The Antlers out in the wilds of west London. One disappointed a little less than the other , but the two contrasting forces here combine to recreate the lucid flow of the latter's Crest. Stripped of nigh on everything aside from Peter Silberman's crystalline indie cooing, it'd appear on first exposure that the self-professed [...]

The Antlers at ATP NYC 2012 (via @ citybug ) The Antlers were one of the many bands on this year's ATP NY , playing Saturday (9/22) between Dirty Three and Mark Lanegan. It was the starting point of a short tour for the band who are in Toronto this evening (9/25) and will play Rochester, NY on Wednesday (9/26) at Water Street Music Hall. The band will also play ATP UK in December. All upcoming Antlers tour dates are listed below. The band also [...]
The first two albums from Bristol trip-hop pioneer Tricky sounded absolutely revolutionary back in the mid-'90s, but after years of diminishing returns (and after being exploded in The Fifth Element ), he disappeared into the pop-culture wilderness for a few years. In recent weeks, though, Tricky has shown up in a couple of unexpected places. Last month, he appeared (with Gangsta Boo, of all people) or a remix of Zebra Katz's forbidding internet dance-rap hit "I'ma Read." And now he's remixed " Crest ," a recent tune from lush Brooklyn indie rockers the Antlers, injecting it with [...]

Six producers worth their salt is a weekly column which features six relevant, up-and-coming, under-exposed, or disruptively innovative musicians in a particular genre-space. Every Friday we’ll put together a list of a half-dozen must-listen artists that are – or we expect to be – making waves in the coming months. Spanish producers are not mentioned enough in electronic music, and this is why I decided as your guide into obscure music, that I must bring these brilliant Spaniards into the spotlight. John Talabot and Pional are the Barcelona natives who are putting Spain on the map. Also featured on this week's [...]

It was a good week in music, September 14-19, was. On Friday, beautiful sounds emanated from my Weezer Cruise buddies The Antlers (who managed to beat out the shitty system at VENUE with beautiful songs and an epic "Putting the Dog to Sleep"), joined by 80s throwbacks and openers Class Actress. Saturday saw a triple bill of Vancouver locals Mode Moderne (borrowing the finest in John Hughes' soundtracks, Suede and Joy Division), San Fran punksters Terry Malts (friends of mine from Sled Island ) and Fresh & Onlys who rocked out at the Media [...]

Thank you Digital Screen of Cheerfulness! I survived and thrived during Days 1 and 2 in the marathon known as Flanders' Belgium's totally rocktacular music festival. Day 3 of Pukkelpop was ahead of me, and I melted within 30 seconds of gaining consciousness. It was HOT in Kiewit. I mean, seriously, HADES + MERCURY hot. But the Digital Screen of Cheerfulness had our backs. Pukkelpop, able to go with the flow of drenching sweat down our cleavages, adjusted its water prices. [...]
