The Antlers at ATP NYC 2012 (via @ citybug ) The Antlers were one of the many bands on this year's ATP NY , playing Saturday (9/22) between Dirty Three and Mark Lanegan. It was the starting point of a short tour for the band who are in Toronto this evening (9/25) and will play Rochester, NY on Wednesday (9/26) at Water Street Music Hall. The band will also play ATP UK in December. All upcoming Antlers tour dates are listed below. The band also [...]
The first two albums from Bristol trip-hop pioneer Tricky sounded absolutely revolutionary back in the mid-'90s, but after years of diminishing returns (and after being exploded in The Fifth Element ), he disappeared into the pop-culture wilderness for a few years. In recent weeks, though, Tricky has shown up in a couple of unexpected places. Last month, he appeared (with Gangsta Boo, of all people) or a remix of Zebra Katz's forbidding internet dance-rap hit "I'ma Read." And now he's remixed " Crest ," a recent tune from lush Brooklyn indie rockers the Antlers, injecting it with [...]

Six producers worth their salt is a weekly column which features six relevant, up-and-coming, under-exposed, or disruptively innovative musicians in a particular genre-space. Every Friday we’ll put together a list of a half-dozen must-listen artists that are – or we expect to be – making waves in the coming months. Spanish producers are not mentioned enough in electronic music, and this is why I decided as your guide into obscure music, that I must bring these brilliant Spaniards into the spotlight. John Talabot and Pional are the Barcelona natives who are putting Spain on the map. Also featured on this week's [...]

It was a good week in music, September 14-19, was. On Friday, beautiful sounds emanated from my Weezer Cruise buddies The Antlers (who managed to beat out the shitty system at VENUE with beautiful songs and an epic "Putting the Dog to Sleep"), joined by 80s throwbacks and openers Class Actress. Saturday saw a triple bill of Vancouver locals Mode Moderne (borrowing the finest in John Hughes' soundtracks, Suede and Joy Division), San Fran punksters Terry Malts (friends of mine from Sled Island ) and Fresh & Onlys who rocked out at the Media [...]

Thank you Digital Screen of Cheerfulness! I survived and thrived during Days 1 and 2 in the marathon known as Flanders' Belgium's totally rocktacular music festival. Day 3 of Pukkelpop was ahead of me, and I melted within 30 seconds of gaining consciousness. It was HOT in Kiewit. I mean, seriously, HADES + MERCURY hot. But the Digital Screen of Cheerfulness had our backs. Pukkelpop, able to go with the flow of drenching sweat down our cleavages, adjusted its water prices. [...]
This week is going to be a doozie! Though the past few weeks have also been filled with memorable shows, it's been a while since I've seen quite this many of my favorite bands in town all at once. Bon Iver (playing 4 nights at Radio City Music Hall), Wye Oak , Field Mouse , Oberhofer , Efterklang , Dr. Dog (with Kishi Bashi ), Austra , The Echo Friendly , the list just goes on and on. Even more, this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, there's a [...]

A selection of photos from Sunday at Electric Picnic 2012 by Debbie Hickey and Luis Faustino .

A little late on this one but I couldn't let it pass through. We've been friends with Joe too long to overlook anything at this point. This is a rare occasion for the Brooklyn producer, I'm pretty sure these are some of the first remixes I've heard from the dude. Eat'em up, I'm sure you've heard at least one of these bands before, see what kinda twist he puts on'em.

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription . This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Every Friday, we present a song from a Northwest artist. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Crest” by The Antlers from their 2012 EP Undersea released on Anti-. The Antlers – Crest ( MP3 ) [...]
Flanders is more than a field, it’s also home to about a bazillion festivals. Putting last year’s tragedy in the rearview, Pukkelpop – dubbed the European Coachella by DJ Martin Solveig and held August 16-18th in Kiewit, Belgium – was this year a celebration of great music. So how does one girl plan her attack of 14-hour days, eight stages, 200+ bands and DJs, in 97°F heat? With good shoes, bottles of water, and a long lens. The first day saw Paris’ drum n’ bass assassins Dirtyphonics nail the Dance Hall and its inhabitants [...]

Brooklyn's indie-soul crew Ava Luna kicked off the year right with a national tour in support of Twin Sister , and the release of their latest full-length, Ice Level . The tight and compact 8 track album continues on with the sort of post-punk/R&B vibe the band has been known for, and you can stream the whole record from their bandcamp site right now. Way back in 2010, we invited the band to headline our first AON Volume show, along with Gay Blades , Weekends [...]

For this edition of my ongoing album art lover series, where I discuss album art trends and stuff, I'm focusing on the album covers using blur, an photo effect I've seen pop up more and more this, year from Cloud Nothings to The Antlers to Chromatics. Probably the most iconic blurry album photo is Bob Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde", which was said to symbolize the dazed and druggy times of the mid-602s (but was actually because it was freezing cold the day of the photoshoot). Blurred album art continues to be popular aesthetic choice, representing everything from [...]
Astronauts, Etc | Mystery Colors Yep. So while the whole blog community goes insane, inside out with love for this new Berkeley upstart, I’m off doing goodness knows what during the week, missing out on the hype and catching up on a humid Saturday evening. Not to worry: It’s within my grasp now. It is, without any disservice to the act being compared, like listening to The Antlers directing themselves into tropical pop territory. All very tender - on an almost Wild Beasts ’, ‘ Smother ‘-like [...]

The Antlers - Undersea By Russell Warfield One of the most amazing things about The Antlers is that they’re not consistently just referred to as ‘that cancer band’. And that they shook off that unsavoury fate with the quality of just one follow up album – an album of such quiet majesty as to blow off the cobwebs of a breakthrough album hinging upon, in slow and painstaking detail, an extended metaphor in the form of the tale of a cancer patient wasting away. Undersea severs [...]

True fans of music spend countless hours searching for that next great song, album or artist, whether it be online or in a local record shop. The beautiful thing about music in today’s age is that technology has created an infinite supply of great music that is available to us at the click of a mouse. How perfect is that? We can discover a brand new artist on the opposite side of the globe in seconds without a radio or a music television channel. It only makes sense that a website so dedicated to this gorgeous universe of music would [...]
