So, somehow I missed it, but back in September, Pitchfork reported that Robert Schneider from Apples in Stereo invented a MIND CONTROLLLED INSTRUMENT. No, this is a real thing. Seriously. As if that wasn't cool enough (and I cannot, at present, think of anything that is actually cooler than that), he also teaches you how to make your own, which I am ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY going to do: As if THAT weren't cool enough, it comes with a bonus. [...]
Don't get me wrong, I think bands and artists should primarily focus on their sounds and not so much their names. With that caveat, it would seem that as bands (and artists) build brands, a good name would be even more valuable to their efforts. Yet, there are too many examples of band names that are dumb, mundane, and/or make absolutely no sense. And they seem more commonplace than ever. It doesn't affect the music. It's just a headscratcher. These artists and bands overcome their names with enjoyable music. Thus, the list of good songs by bands [...]

The best way to get a feel for a band is to hear them live. It's a great way to start a review, too; the presentation is a vivid description of the group's power onstage, a retelling of the moment you realized that driving all the way out to see the show was worth it. [...]

If Godzilla is on your show poster, I will talk about you. Didn't I see you at Weedeater on Monday night? Oh, I didn't? That's because I was played hooky and wasn't there. Where I was happens to be none of your business (read: sitting on my bed, fatigued and shoegazing). The underlining point is that [...]
Sure, people talk about how amazing New York, Chicago, Austin and the like are. But that's easy. When a city is big, of course there will be cool stuff - because there are lots of people there. What about when a city isn't some huge metropolis and cultural center, but it somehow finds a way to be awesome? That's why we're on the scene. This week, Vince Griffin of Bear Colony gives us some insight into what's hopping and popping with the hepcats in Little Rock, Ark. What [...]

Here are the things that I love oh so much about High Fidelity, and miss in my current musical universe: -constant list-making -knowing endless trivia and stories about every band and song -sarcasm. So for the Paper Crane Collective, I figured I'd combine all these things into a twice-monthly Top 5 list. Every other Tuesday, Those Who Dig will present a list on various topics, genres, themes, news stories, or whatever we feel like writing [...]
"No Vacation" was one of my favorite tracks off the Apples in Stereo's last album Travellers in Space and Time. Now it gets the video treatment, directed by Danny of the Lexington group Big Fresh. I feel kind of like a chump because (I'm assuming) this was shot in Lexington but I only recognized one [...]

Sometimes my mp3 player picks some really shitty playlists for me. Occasionally it will play back to back songs by the same artist, or just shit that I don't want to listen to. Every once in a while though it produces a perfect mix for my mood. My music device and I are in sync and I anticipate each track hoping the flow of awesomeness will continue. My ride home from a friends house the other night on 1-23-11 was one of those occurrences. The ride home lasted [...]

Ya Boy ft. Dr. Hollywood - We Run L.A. "You know what you do, you do the best" I can't really sing a lot of hip hop songs since they are fast, and so many words, but this is one of the few I am pretty much sing word for word, and I love it! LA girl all the way here so how can I not right? haha. I guess there are reasons not too... but still damn catchy If you enjoyed that track, here are few others that [...]

I have two social circles. A lot of people do - They divide their home life or work life from their social life and I'm no exception. Recently, I was sitting with Matt Roney, that RFC contributor I seem to be damn near inseperable from these days given how many of my tales involve him, and I mentioned that, in my "home life", I'm "The Barney". To understand this, of course, you have to mildly familiar with CBS's hilarious sitcom, How I Met Your Mother, which features the following archetypes: Lily and Marshall: The [...]

The problem with so-called best-of lists, is that they are really just a collection of items organized based on experience and time, in that there will be plenty of albums heard the following year and beyond that will hold just as much weight as these we dub as "Best." So, as of right now, at this particular time in the tail end of 2010 and the first moments of 2011, these albums are the best. There's no question about it; it will change. My next list (which I've started, but may take a while to publish) is [...]

The year comes to a close tomorrow and it's time to start compiling those "Best Of" lists we all love. What better way to kick things off than with a mega-mix of the year's best ass-shaking jams. Those tracks that just take a hold and force you to dip that hip, and just in time for New Year's Eve! Some are originals, some are remixes, and some are mashups. It's no means a definitive list nor are the tracks in any sort of ranking. These are the tracks that have gotten my blood pumping all year long and [...]

Toronto - 2010 was a pretty good year for music, yet many of my musical highlights involved music that was not new or at least new music by older artists. It was a year that saw numerous band reunions - I saw Thrush Hermit, Soundgarden, Swans, Suede and X Japan - as well as the return of bands who had been away long enough that it seemed like a reunion (Teenage Fanclub). Still, although I spent much of my time looking back, there was a lot of new stuff to get excited about this year. So here's list of some stuff I liked. [...]

Ground Control So maybe some of you heard that Jeff Mangum, that guy who used to be in that one band, played a surprise show of Neutral Milk Hotel tunes to a Brooklyn crowd of about 75 this past weekend ( MP3s or it didn't happen ). And while that's a pretty cool thing in and of itself, not to mention giving those in attendance bragging rights in certain circles for the rest of their lives, that it happened just before word that the Elephant 6 collective of which the Neutral [...]
