After having a jolly fun time with The Elwins at Mavericks on May 25, 2012. Next up was Dan Griffin . For those who don't know who he is, just say he plays in the band called The Arkells . He was promoting his album "Leave Your Love". The set was more of a indie folk-rock style. Kind of reminded me of Great Bloomers. I didn't get to [...]

Hey there! You should read this original post on the hill by going here: Dan Griffin - Yulia (Wolf Parade Cover) Wednesdays are made for cover songs. At least this is what I've heard, or rather, this is the premise I'm concocting to suit the needs of this post. But have a listen to Dan Griffin's rather solemn, acoustic take on Wolf Parade's tragic Cosmonaut opus Yulia and you'll agree it deserved a posting. Griffin, also known as a member of current CDN rock radio faves Arkells , released a rather lovely [...]

The Ontario-based indie rockers Arkells are not as known in the States...yet, but they're this year's recipients of the Juno Award for "Group Of The Year." Their recently released album, Michigan Left , has earned praise for its flourishes of '70s and '80s rock music, drawing comparisons to Fleetwood Mac and Bruce Springsteen. Download the Michigan Left fan favorite, "Kiss Cam", below. Read more »

Filed under: Video , Exclusive Universal Music Canada What better way to celebrate this Juno Awards weekend's, er, celebration of Canadian music than with this exclusive, maple syrup-coated cover of 2011 Juno-winner Neil Young 's "Harvest Moon" by this year's nominees Arkells and CanRock cohorts from Cuff the Duke , Great Lake Swimmers , City and Colour and Ladies of the Canyon . The working-class [...]
The Arkells were one of the groups of SXSW that surprised me in a positive way. I had no idea who they were (in my notes they're listed as "Band #33 of the evening) and had to look them up once I got home to find out their name. But they used that to their [...]
Spring has sprung and that could only mean one thing: Crocs season is back y'all! More importantly, the lineup announcement for this year's Osheaga Music Festival. Its 7th edition will be held once again @ Parc Jean-Drapeau and because of last year's success, will continue to be a 3-day affair from August 3rd to the 5th. The headliners [...]

The Arkells are pretty big in Canada. I know this because they recently played the Sound Academy, which must be some sort of beacon that signifies they have made it. I have never really examined them because of their crappy band name. It's a stupid reason, but I also judge a book by its thickness so I'm probably a dumb ass to some extent. Either way, as part of my #occupybelmont night at SXSW , I was able to see and hear these Hamilton upstarts for the first time. While I found Arkell's brand of gang chorus [...]

@KRBronson on Thursday at SXSW (also see: Jesus and Mary Chain review): Arms makes indie-rock for people who like indie-rock, with sharp guitar and bass lines, sharper lyrics and arresting shifts in tempo and mood that toggle adeptly between nice and gnarly. Mastermind Todd Goldstein once played in Harlem Shakes, who had their 15 minutes of next-big-thing around the time they played the Buzz Bands LA showcase in Austin in 2009 . Harlem Shakes went quietly into [...]

wowza! i havent seen too many of the other lineups out there, but me thinks, and of course i am biased, you'd be hard pressed to find a better couple shows to check out while y'all are galavanting around sxsw. so with out further adieu here are the lineups to the two shows. also thanks to the sponsors, listed below, who helped make this possible. most of the bands can be found via this american music , if not their respective websites have been linked to. wednesday's party, btw, has free torchy's tacos! Ontario's indie rock favorites, The Arkells , have released a new cover version of Lana Del Rey's song "Video Games". Their version retreats from the electronic and orchestral overtones that hold sway in Lana's original almost completely. Instead, the band has provided a new look into the song by way of acoustic finger style guitar and a slightly quicker delivery; A departure from even their own usually upbeat sound, this new take shows the group's musical versatility. Filed under: News , New Music , New Releases Universal Music Canada Even if you have a total hate-on for Lana Del Rey -- and a lot of folks do -- deep down there's some part of you that finds her insta-hit ' Video Games ' totally earwormy. C'mon, admit it. So naturally the song is going to get its fair share of covers. Bombay Bicycle Club reworked the [...]

By Jon Herriot Here is a version of Lana Del Rey's hit single "Video Games", by Arkells out of Hamilton, Ontario. They keep it quiet, acoustic and simple, which is change-up from their typical rock sound. I have had the good fortune of seeing them play on two occasions, and their lead man has stage presence unlike anything I have seen. It makes for quite the live performance. Arkells are one of Canada's hottest indie rock acts, and their latest album Michigan Left [...]

On March 27th, Toronto retro-rock band Zeus will release its sophomore album, Busting Visions , via Arts & Crafts. The follow-up to 20102s Say Us , this latest LP spans 14 tracks and is described by the label as a "sweaty romp of a record, oozing cool, with fuzzed-out riffs, razor-sharp hooks, and harmonies galore." For a sneak peek, the band has unleashed the lead single, "Are You Gonna' Waste My Time?". With a Who-ian intro, the track furthers the band's work of building solid Southern rock grooves, [...]
