Checking out with the Armchairs

Checking out with the Armchairs The Armchairs' first show and final show were similar beasts: both took place at Johnny Brenda's, on a Friday the 13th, and both involved Easter egg hunts. Between filling plastic eggs with jelly beans, sipping beer, and building moats, the four members of The Armchairs took the time to (sort of) give an interview about their four memorable years in the Philly music scene. As they frequently interrupted, or simply talked over each other, it became clear The Armchairs' break-up ...

Photo Recap: THE FINAL ARMCHAIRS SHOW (Maybe)!

Photo Recap: THE FINAL ARMCHAIRS SHOW (Maybe)! I was out last Friday night covering the Hezekiah Leaves and Spinning Joneses Release Party at Bookspace (which I'll have photos up for you soon), but I was very happy to be able to make it over to Johnny Brenda's to capture some amazing photos of the FINAL performance by The Armchairs . The madcap foursome certainly didn't fizzle out like most bands tend to do when breaking up. In fact, it was (as I am sure most of their fans and friends will agree) the BEST ARMCHAIRS SHOW EVER which is obviously bittersweet (and makes me [...]

This Weekend's Picks: Adele, The Loom, Simone Felice, Dutch, Fake Problems, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., The Armchairs

This Weekend's Picks: Adele, The Loom, Simone Felice, Dutch, Fake Problems, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., The Armchairs The Loom FRIDAY, MAY 13 The Loom simply plays folk music—or, at its most complex, chamber-folk music. The six-piece Brooklyn-based act has horns, ukulele, piano, and some (primarily undistorted) guitars; they don't add reverb or loops or lo-fi or beats. But the distinctly folk sound is only one way in which The Loom serves as a reminder of the past. Sure, the band's increasing popularity has pushed it into the blog realm—but, for an indie band, a surprising amount of its acclaim comes from old media. The New [...]

Where Is My Mind?: The Armchairs

Where Is My Mind?: The Armchairs The Armchairs are performing their last show this Friday at Johnny Brenda's with buddies Orbit to Leslie , The Circadian Rhythms , and Dinosaur Feathers, and The Deli Magazine will also be there presenting it. We wanted a chance to interview our loveable psych-pop crew for surprisingly the first and last time. Like an Armchairs show, it was all about being in the moment. We caught up with the band right before they headed off to their second last show in Brooklyn at Death by Audio, and conducted the interview in their van on Broad [...]

Philly Local Philes: The Armchairs' "Owl Hands"

Philly Local Philes: The Armchairs' "Owl Hands" When The Armchairs appeared on the Y-Rock Philly Local in 2009, Andrew Morris recited science texts through wacky vocal filters and singer-guitarist Andy Molholt took phone calls from his mom while on-air. Ever since then, the Fishtown oddballs have had a special place in my heart. The band has sadly come to the end of its road: tomorrow night's show at Johnny Brenda's is its last. But they're going out on a high note, on the heels of a fantastic album (last year's Science And Advice) , at a point where they're all still buds [...]

The Armchairs are(n't) breaking up

The Armchairs are(n't) breaking up A few weeks ago Philly staples and friends of WQHS The Armchairs announced that their third to last performance as a band would come tonight at Pilam's Human BBQ. Needless to say we were distraught. But now comes breaking news from their performance at said event, with correspondent Tanya Bogin reporting live: "The Armchairs aren't breaking up. Straight from Michael Chadwick's mouth: it was an April Fools' joke." Phew.

Link Roundup, 4/8: The Armchairs call it quits, more on Major Lazer's Adult Swim show

The Armchairs Are Breaking Up!: This was a bummer when we heard about it, and we were hoping that it was a joke, but guitarist, singer and sometimes keyboardist Andy Molholt confirmed that it was true. Genial psych-pop outfit The Armchairs are breaking up citing "differing goals, differing musical and creative directions, increasing interpersonal tension, the law of increasing atrophy (the 2nd law of thermodynamics)". Let the Convergence Begin: Kicking Things Off at House of 88

Let the Convergence Begin: Kicking Things Off at House of 88 I was on my way to Texas, and I didn't have a media pass, an official badge, a wristband, or a proper RSVP to any SXSW event. I didn't have a show booked in any proximity to Austin during that mess of musical madness, nor did I try to wiggle my simplistic acoustic set into any possible schedule. Besides, there wasn't any room in our packed sedan for my guitar; I surrendered its spot in the car last minute to make room for stranded DC performance artist Adrian Parsons, whom we ended up scooping up in Knoxville, [...]

Music of Philly: The Armchairs

Music of Philly: The Armchairs The Armchairs are a wonderful goof-rock band that frequently haunts Philly diy space The Ox, where they can often be found moving bodies with their offbeat song structures and surprising funkiness. Often reminiscent of The Kinks at their best, this 4-piece combines deft guitar work and quirky keyboard lines, often in unconventional time signatures, with a low end that holds it down well. The lyrics, much like the overall vibe generated by the band's members as well as their music, is best described as psychedelic. But for all of their innate silliness, their live show is an energetic affair, and [...]

MIX: OhBliv – SUNDAY (The White Wicker Jazz Collection)

MIX: OhBliv – SUNDAY (The White Wicker Jazz Collection) OhBliv dropped this excellent Jazz mix for the art of rəuse last week. Virginia based beat maker OhBliv takes the reigns for the fourth thriftcast by the art of reuse. He steps out of his usual soulful hip hop element to weave a mix of classic jazz. As the title would suggest, this is the Sunday white wicker armchair joint. Previous posts on OhBliv . OhBliv: SoundCloud . Tumblr [...]

The Armchairs & Arrah and the Ferns at The Ox Feb. 25

The Armchairs & Arrah and the Ferns at The Ox Feb. 25 It's getting close to that time of year again when indie acts hop into their vans, forego a little hygiene, and descend on the crowded Austin streets. Psych-pop outfit The Armchairs will be performing tonight at The Ox (or I guess you can kind of call it their home). It's a bit of a bon voyage party for the loveable crew as they prepare to hit the road for a 20+ show tour which includes a stop down at SXSW. They'll be joined by buds Arrah and the Ferns who will be sharing in the madcap [...]

This Weekend's Concert Picks: Moon Women, Ladies Auxiliary, Power Animal, Grimace Federation, Slutever, Grandchildren

This Weekend's Concert Picks: Moon Women, Ladies Auxiliary, Power Animal, Grimace Federation, Slutever, Grandchildren Slutever performs 1/15 at Kung Fu Necktie If you hadn't noticed by the header, this weekend is more than packed with good shows. And you can't attend them all, which means you've got some decisions to make. FRIDAY, JANUARY 14 Philadelphia reverb-rock trio Moon Women opens (alongside Roanoke, VA's Eternal Summers ) for Detroit's Tyvek in a No Wavelength show at 8 p.m. at Cha-cha'razzi . Given that the majority of tonight's other shows feature local headliners (who'll likely be playing again in [...]

This Weekend's Concerts: Strand Of Oaks, Old 97′s, The Armchairs, Dangerous Ponies

This Weekend's Concerts: Strand Of Oaks, Old 97′s, The Armchairs, Dangerous Ponies Strand Of Oaks performs 12/10 at Johnny Brenda's FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10 Beardo-musician-dude-has-the-b lues is a common theme among angst-ridden indie-folk albums written by solo artists from the warm comfort of their own bedroom. But Strand Of Oaks ' Timothy Showalter has straight-up lived it the experience. By now, the story of Showalter losing most of his earthly possessions in a house fire—right around the same time his fiancée left him, no less—forcing him into homelessness is the stuff of, uh, indie-rock mini-legend. That situation provided much of [...]

A Dose of 'Science and Advice' from the Armchairs

A Dose of 'Science and Advice' from the Armchairs "Could we call you back in a minute?" Andy of The Armchairs asked. "We're buying tickets right now at the door for Deer Tick." The boys from the Philly band The Armchairs weren't just buying tickets, but they were about to step into the show. Inbetween getting tickets and getting stoked for the show, recommended by their friend from another Philly band, The Extraordinaires, Andy took a moment to talk about the latest Armchairs production, Science and Advice . Their album art is quite captivating; it's a mix-up of black and [...]

Countdown to Abbey Pub

Countdown to Abbey Pub Hi, I'm Shiloh. This is my first post. I'm going to a concert soon in Chicago, where I live. Okay, three weeks soon. August 22. The night before I start grad school. Okay, I've already taken one class, but it doesn't count because it was an unpleasant summer affair. There will be four bands there. One of them has a friend of an acquaintance as the guitar player. I think another one of the bands used to practice in my old apartment building, back when I lived in an artist commune of sorts. Another one of the band's albums features [...]
