More like exercist stairs, am I right? We proposed another Music From Big Chair session to the Portland-based punky-folk rockers The Ascetic Junkies, but the band had another locale in mind: Georgetown's famed exorcist stairs, so-called because of the scene in the 1973 horror flick The Exorcist . If you're from the area, you've definitely seen it, 702s film effects and all; Georgetown hosts a showing every Halloween in Gaston Hall. But in recent years the stairs have been better known for the quad-burning workout they offer (we caught some of these dedicated [...]

Last week we covered a new track from Portland folk outfit Death Songs called "Wounds" off the new PDX Pop Now! compilation. We talked a little bit about the band and the song, and had a few words to say about the organization as well. That wasn't enough; it's high time I let slip a little something - we here at FensePost have been quiet supporters of the Portland festival. Visit the music room in my house and you'll see several from the compilation [...]

HOLY CRAP! I am proud to announce that this Thursday, Snob Theater will be part of the prestigious Bridgetown Comedy Festival in glorious Portland, OR. So to celebrate, we have put together a slamming line-up of our favorite comedians with two fantastic Portland bands. [...]

The Ascetic Junkies may have recorded their new and stunningly brilliant LP, This Cage Has No Bottom , in a short period of time and in the comfort of their Portland home, but some might feel as though this is an album two years in the making. Although the band's debut album, One Shoe Over The Cuckoo's Nest , was a brilliant display of folk/bluegrass in the new age, it was subject to being undeservingly pigeonholed as just an indie folk act. And no matter how wrong and downright stupid these thoughts would [...]
After a triumphant 2010, that included the release of their acclaimed debut LP, Weathervanes, Queen's popular indie band, The Freelance Whales, are keeping fans engaged into the waning months of 2010 with a new song, "Enzymes." At first, it doesn't really sound like the FW; the sound is more heavily infused with an indie pop [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Considering I'm a relatively stable, happy kind of guy, my musical taste is strangely focused on the maudlin and dreary. Not so much in terms of actual melodies and chords, but certainly when it comes to lyrics I have a distinct appetite for the acerbic and bitter - which is usually accompanied by musical textures in a similar down-beat, dark and moody vein. Invariably, when an acid wit and taste for the gloomy is combined with cheerful, happy-go-lucky music my ears are instinctively pricked and eager. With Portland's The Ascetic Junkies this balance between the joyous and the the spiteful is a tricky one [...]

Wasn’t expecting a lot with a name like that, much less when the sound of a country twang hoved into ear view. Thankfully though I wasn’t as trigger happy on the delete function as normal and the Ascetic Junkies began to work their undoubted yet understated charm. The Portland band are onto their second album ‘The Cage Has No Bottom’ (out mid next month) and the 3 songs I’ve heard from it are all such fine jamborees. ‘Get What You Want, Get What You Need’ is especially huggable, the kind of tune the Waltons could have lapped up if they [...]

Even over in snowy Oregon, them filles sourires seem to have a certain reputation. Portland’s Ascetic Junkies pay their hommage to Gallic beauties with jingle-jangling indie pop plus a dose of bluegrass fun: Paul, when you get to heaven there'll be/ All these angels mostly sizes C and D/ Well-endowed with God's great majesty So Paul, you'll love to hear everything that they say/ Even just "Je ne parle pas Anglais"/ You're not that into language anyway. Well, it's not exactly what I’d call the Jane B. cup hymn, but then a [...]

Matt, Kali & the infamous crew known simply as The Ascetic Junkies are back with a brand new bag! Yes, Portland's favorite folk/pop and sort of punk group are bringing some new material to their anxiously awaiting fans - it's been over a year since the gang put out one of the best albums of 2008, One Shoe Over The Cuckoo's Nest . As groundbreaking and delightful as the album was, you could always tell there could have been more. And on December 11th at Backspace, the City of Roses will be fortunate enough [...]

Written by Ron Trembath The Ascetic Junkies are folk, punk, bluegrass, or maybe even indie, respectively. But, what sticks out most is the fun they create no matter how slow chords move or how quick the spoons clap. One Shoe Over The Cuckoo's Nest brilliantly comes off as vocalists Kali Giaritta and Matt Hammon's ultimate love letter to one another. Their trade offs of vocal duties work as well as their collaborative efforts. Their leadership roles in this new wave folk group is obvious, yet they still [...]
Songs That Might Otherwise Pass You By **These aren't direct downloads--if you click on the link, it'll take you to a webpage where you can both listen to the song and download it. I posted the songs using Zshare because two of the songs were sent to me directly from the artists, and one of them ("Dance, Dance, Dance") is downloadable through Paste Music, but I wouldn't be able to to link
