The Ataris start recording new album Kris Roe from The Ataris has begun documenting the new album process. Pictures are available on his blog : "Hi everyone! Recording of The Ataris new album has now officially begun! Just wanted to post a few photos from the first few days of pre-production here at the studio. I will be adding some video footage as well as some clips of rough mixes as we progress further along. I think everyone is going to be really surprised by the new songs. I [...]
If there were any property that could get me to ante up and buy a new video game system it might be Ghostbusters. The original cast all came back to voice their characters which is awesome, and it was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.?? The game will be distributed by Atari. Does anyone remeber the maddening 8-bit Nintendo version of this game where the only thing you had to worry about was crossing the streams??? That game gave me video game rage the likes of which I've experienced with few games.

A friend and I had a punk rock radio show back when we were in college. We had a total of two listeners... Me and him (and not always either... seriously). Like most music snobs, I completely hate the radio (but like parenthesis). For some reason, punk bands like to sing about the radio quuuiite a bit, I'm guessing it's a Sylvester-Tweety bird situation. Pursue it, but you're never going to

Sideonedummy Records has had a pretty damn good year. With brilliant albums by Gogol Bordello and The Briggs already under their belt, one could safely assume that their catalog of releases for 2008 may have already reached its prime, meaning no disrespect whatsoever. It would be quite the challenge to dethrone one, let alone both of [...]

ok, so i might as well complete my job reviewing the "crystal" bands. crystal castles is actually the name of an atari 2600 game, and coincidentally, i had an atari 2600 console as a kid (although indy 500 was my favorite game). perhaps the atari reference isn't too inappropriate considering the treatment crystal castles gave to "crimewave", the rowdy, headache-inducing track off health 's self titled debut album released last year. while the original was a brief but densely packed two minutes of pounding beats and dissonant punk complete with a rotting stench, the reworking [...]

I love the process of making a mixtape. The picking of a theme, the researching tracks, the hunting down songs, putting all the songs together, making sure it's just right before you finalize it and give to its intended recipient. If I could be paid for making mixtapes, I could die a happy man. On my last assignment , I decided to talk about the process and art form of a mixtape. I talk about how it brings all sorts of creativity to the surface from creating a theme to compiling the right songs to even making [...]
Ah, summer. Livin' is easy, if you stay in the basement and cower (if you're like me). Being as pale as I am, I don't go very many places without SPF 50 (I kid you not) and long sleeves. And I live in a desert. So yeah. I stay in my basement and listen to summery songs, and dream of October. The Ataris - Boys of Summer I am completely and totally surprised that no one has posted this. Or the original, which I was [...]

Apparently, there's meant to be something unlucky about today. I can't quite put my finger on it. It's not like 300 people got sacked from Silverjet airlines today or anything. If you ask me, I think the whole Friday 13th superstition is silly. A far worse day is January 2nd, which has been scientifically proven to be the worst day of the year for leaking washing machines. If anything, Friday 13th is a good day. Is Friday not the day when we all get to go [...]

What better place to get your music journalism (or any journalism) than a publication best known for its outlandish headlines ? So it's particularly exciting when the New York Post unveils a music-related list. This one's a doozy: the "best 100 cover songs of all time" ! Alas, the list isn't perfect. The first hint: only 3 of the supposedly "best cover songs of all time" appear on the soundtrack to Not Another Teen Movie . Saliva should be so pissed off. While few are likely [...]

The past couple of days have been extremely difficult for the music industry. It's long been determined that the music business can change faster than Britney's choice of which rehab center she'll occupy. However, the past 48 hours have dealt a pair of insufferable blows to the fine world of music - in particular to the fine genre of pop punk. Bands break-up and form everyday, comparable to the "real world" where people consistently die and give birth. True in both realms of life are the impacts of certain deaths; repercussions for the demise of [...]
Van Halen reunion with Roth? E! Online reports that a deal could be signed as early as today for a 40 city tour. An email I sent to Eddie Van Halen's rep on the West Coast this morning is unanswered. Given the time difference, I'll update later if this is confirmed. MTV UK reports that Amy Winehouse and Jamie Callum were among a group kicked out of a London bar last night. The same report
Have you heard about the new The Ataris record? I know this kind of opening sentences suck. At first glance, they don't make any sense. So what if i say that i've a new cool, flowing alt. rock song from new The Ataris. You want to hear the songs if someone says 'new album is great', 'that song is cool', 'try it out'... All of these are crappy! Because you need to hear the song for having
Anderson, Indiana's own, The Ataris will make their return this February. The album will be their seventh and it is entitled Welcome the Night . This new album brings about five new band members. Sean Hansen on bass, Shane Chickeles on drums, Bob Hoag on piano and keyboards, Paul Carabello on third guitar, and Angus Cooke on cello. This album has been two years in the making and The Ataris are now on their own label, Isola Recordings, after leaving Columbia in mid-2006. The [...]

Video game inspired mp3s after the jump. A few years ago I picked up an Atari 2600 and a bunch of games at a thrift store. I never had an Atari as a kid. I always had to go to the neighbor's house to play his Atari, which was frustrating because he could give me a sound thrashing on pretty much every game. Finally, after much begging, I did get my own videogame system, but it was, dammit, Intellivision ("intelligent television"). 16 bits be dammed, it just didn't have the [...]
Ponder this, as I did… What the hell is up with punk bands covering arena rock acts? How did music that was a response to a certain style of music- specifically, prog rock, which was and is incredibly detailed and requires a great amount of skill to play- end up ...
