Weekly Roundup coming at you, read on for some freshly dug songs and videos.

It's alive! And just like that, my winter break from work is over. It lasted but 24 hours. These are the joys of working in retail, I suppose. Everyone else gets to relax and eat with family or friends who are out of work for a bit, and I have one day off. And what do I get after a long day of work? I come home, burn my hand on some soup and get to listen to French prog-rock records alone. I guess it could be worse. I could be ill or something. [...]

mp3: Copy - Breakfast Copy is the moniker of Marius Libman, a master beat maker who is already a legend in his hometown of Portland, Oregon. Now Libman is ready for the big time with the recent release of his new LP Hard Dream , a concept album "loosely intended as a score to the un-filmed movie; part synth pop, part electro, part Italo disco, with a twist of Ratatat, and a dash of John Carpenter". You've got my attention. Check out the new video for "Breakfast" [...]

Sam Adams sure does love local music. Just a week after announcing that the city is replacing its old hold music with tunes from local bands , today PDX Pop Now! —Portland's premiere all-ages music festival—outlined its plans for a free concert outside city hall. PPN! is hosting the event on Thursday, July 22 with performances from the Nick Jaina Band, Atole, Kelli Schaefer, and the Andrew Oliver Quartet . The show starts at 5:45, but get there early, because it's sure to fill up, especially if the weather is nice. Last year electropop duo YACHT and [...]

This is one of those songs that hits me every way just right. They should be playing a show with Legowelt, Atole, Solenoid and DJ Rainbow Pudding in Portland, OR on August 7th at Mississippi Studios if you dig. SHOWTIME! Light Asylum - A Certain Person http://www.myspace.com/lightas ylum

Who's your favorite dance band in Portland? Chances are, it's one of the six—yep, count 'em on two hands!—bands/artists on the new PDXTC split from High Scores and Records . Just one month after the label—founded by Devin Gallagher of Typhoon, Ghosties, etc.—released Guidance Counselor's self-titled debut on vinyl, it's dropping another dose of beautiful vinyl. The Ian Anderson-curated 12-inch LP features new tracks from Guidance Counselor , Atole , Breakfast Mountain , May Ling , Jeffrey Jerusalem and Wampire . The record drops on Thursday, May 27, with everyone [...]

Let's just get this out of the way: I have no idea what the hell Manny Reyes is singing on "Strike Zone." Not that it really matters. Reyes' band Atole has been a constant in Portland's electronic music scene for going on four years now, leaving a trail of sweat and tired feet wherever it plays. The vocals in "Strike Zone" are not intended for you to sit and ponder over—they are meant to freak you out on the dancefloor. Atole has gone through a few versions of "Strike Zone" over the years, [...]

Portland, Oregon, one of the country's meccas for artists and musicians, now has its own music-centered web video series over at famed advertising firm Wieden + Kennedy . You can watch the free series here , which contains interviews with local record labels like Marriage Records and Audio Dregs as well as performances from local bands Explode Into Colors, Grouper, Rob Walmart, White Fang, Atole and more. If you enjoy weird, eccentric and experimental music, this is certainly a great place for discovery. [...]

It's been a good year for Manny Reyes and the dudes behind the disco krautrock band Atole. After touring the West Coast with Starfucker and throwing the killer all-ages dance party Superfest, the band is just about ready to drop its new EP—one that should attract a whole new legion of fans. While its earlier material was fun but often a little weird for the sake of being weird, "Satyricow" and the rest of the Brainwaves EP—itself a preview from the band's upcoming Audio Dregs full-length—shows Atole going in a slightly more accessible but no [...]

With a name like Superfest and a lineup featuring the likes of Portland favorites YACHT and Starfucker, it was understandable that expectations were running a little high for the two day, all-ages electronic music festival this June. Thankfully, most of these expectations were met and many were even exceeded. The first day of Superfest featured some stellar performances from Panther, and from Guidance Counselor, who debuted some new songs from their forthcoming album out later this summer. We expected Guidance Counselor to post a solid performance, as [...]

Photos by: Charlie Homo White Cloud , Atole and Starfucker deserved a better slot than a Tuesday evening, and dished out a unique blend of feedback-heavy electro pop that felt better suited for a Friday. Local group White Cloud opened the night with a mellow - at least in comparison to Starfucker - set featuring rhythmic change-ups and occasional dissonance, while Atole delivered lots of dance-worthy synth rock punctuated with abstract vocals. [...]

We've already offered up one pair of tickets earlier today (see Trainwreck Riders CD Release Party ) as a part of our new Ticket Giveaway Wednesday series and now we have several more shows for you to go to - all for free... Saturday, June 20 - White Rabbits @ The Independent White Rabbits are playing this weekend over at The Independent in support of their acclaimed new album It's Frightening released last month. [...]

Where were all the dancers on Sunday night? I know, you were probably still marveling at the site of The Boss' crotch coming right atcha. But still, eating too much guacamole during the Super Bowl is kind of a lame excuse for missing the second installment of our monthly music and interview series, Portland Makes Music. Way back in October, when we were brainstorming ideas for PMM, the one main issue we wanted to address was diversity. While the Lounge Series kicked a lot of ass, most of the shows centered on quiet, acoutic-based singer-songwriters. [...]

Other than the absolute scenic beauty of this atoll with a heart shaped island in the middle, it boasted the best snorkling and scuba diving spot I have ever seen. Lush corals surround it and then a sudden dip into the india ocean. The fish aren't scared and will come really close to you. The trumpet fish are huge and the Napoleons will brush up against you lazily. The corals are like rainbows and the species are endless. To top it all off, we went to another side of the atoll and swam with wild dolphins. It was an exquisite [...]

Live: El Guincho, Atole and Breakfast Mountain at Holocene, 11.23.08 Sometimes I think practitioners of electronic music are more interested in wowing you with how many gadgets and knobs they have at their disposal than putting any actual soul into the music. It usually makes for a, well, lifeless experience ... unless, perhaps, you have just the right amalgam of chemicals in your system. There was something very endearing and pure to the music of Spanish artist Pablo Díaz-Reixa , better known as El Guincho . It's just the right mixture of [...]
This one's from the wayback machine. Manny Reyes of funtime PDX electronic dance band Atole (playing my crazy MFNW showcase on Sept. 6 with Paper/Upper/Cuts, Eskimo and Sons and the Chicharones, by the way) sent over an old home recording he did of Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees" in honor of "Radiohead Day." The mega-group is playing in Washington right now. Those "Bring 'Em to Portland" petitions didn't work out. I think this was the song that impressed me most off The Bends way back when I was a wee nerd. Good to know that other [...]
Mother's Day comes early! Or, actually, three months late, depending on how you look at it. But guess what? Today my mom is offering her opinions on the new live track by Atole! Recorded live at the practice space Hotel, "Baby Jam" and another one, "Plock," are available for FREE download on the Atole's Myspace page until this upcoming Saturday morning. Without further ado, my mom's take on "Baby Jam": It sounds old-timey bluegrass to me. I thought the voice was a fiddle. His [frontman Manny Reyes'] voice seems to stand in as a fiddle. Remember [...]
