Chicago's The Atomica Project have released a new EP. 1st In a Series of Dramatic Events is just that, the first in a three EP set from group. While most of the songs on the 5-track effort are similar in style to their previous ambient electronic work, they do branch out into more organic territory on "Oh, So Quickly".As always, Lauren Cheatham's astonishing vocals lead the way.Check it out and

From their 5 song EP "1st In A Series Of Dramatic Events" The Atomica Project is a union of downtempo beats and stunning female vocals, amplified by an organic warmth generally absent from electronic music. Devised in 2004 by programmer/songwriter Wade Alin and vocalist Lauren Cheatham, The Atomica Project made waves in the chillout/electronic music community with their 2005 debut release Metropolitan. Based heavily on Alin's personal experiences in New York, Metropolitan illustrates a compelling story of loss, affliction, collapse and recovery. Fueled by [...]
Love (<) The Atomica Project - Grayscale Her voice reminds me of the female vocals in interludes on Scandinavian Death Metal albums that I used to listen to in High school, which is why I was instantly attracted to it. The song writing makes me think that this duo was in a dark place when they were forming these songs. This was a hard album to recommend to some friends, but I can only imagine that's more a fault on my side than the album's The Atomica [...]

Wade Alin and Lauren Cheatham came together in 2004 to combine downtempo rhythms and silky sweet vocals under the name Atomica Project. Add a drummer and bassist, and this full-fledged band comes across like Portishead....without all the dreariness. Despite the coldness that electronica often embodies, the songs on Atomica Project's sophomore release Grayscale are dually warm and embracing. Cheatham entices with her come-hither vocals that reminds me of something so familiar, yet I can't quite place it. And that's precisely what's so great about Atomica Project-the sounds are unique but comfortable. Bands like [...]

These two bands have more in common aside from both being male/female duos. Both bands' music is rather haunting and pulsating at the same time, a lovely combination. On their debut album, London's Vanilla Swingers weave an elaborate yet touching tale of finding, leaving and reclaiming life and love through the magic of time travel. A lot of their songs have a hushed quality about them, although they do let loose on occasion and the tension becomes more evident. [...]

A man's mood can be fickle. The caprice of his temperament can be caused by a song he hears, a book he reads, the program on the television, or by how many clouds he can count in the sky. Felicity can shift to despair as quickly as bad weather rolling in. Those who call Chicago home know this fact better than most. In fact, many can't count how many times they've set off to Lake Michigan, under the bright sun and were turned back by a dark rain. In a sense, this was the [...]

The Atomica Project is back with their sophomore record, Grayscale, a lovely collection of trip hop-infused downtempo (or downtempo-infused trip hop, it's hard to keep everything straight). Their press materials continue to compare them favorably to Portishead, which might not...

Her voice floats in like a dream... instantly familiar but unrecognizable. The warm, passionate sound fills yours ears as it meanders through genres. This isn't simple trip hop, isn't sterile downtempo, it isn't even orchestral or lo-fi. It breathes in the space in-between as the perfect amalgam of devastating desire and beat. Seemingly contradictory with it's layers of organic thought and electronic expression... The Atomica Project returns with a stunning sophomore record, " Grayscale ". Taking nearly three years to complete after their debut album " Metropolitan ", " Grayscale " is lush with elaborate narratives of failure [...]

The Atomica Project came onto my radar with 2005's Metropolitan . Metropolitan was a nice enough album, though it seemed to borrow too heavily from its trip-hop influences. It came across as dated and formulaic. The group has since toured heavily and added a keyboardist and drummer to their lineup. This has served them well, since Atomica has created their sublime new effort, called Grayscale . Grayscale takes turns being lavish and delicate, dramatic and restrained. Vocalist Lauren Cheatham is the obvious draw for the Atomica Project, but [...]
