As a kid in the '70s and a teenager in the '80s, I lived in that world of limited entertainment options unfathomable now. Our small town in the hinterlands had an old movie theater and the movies of the day usually made it to the screen, but it might take a month or two. Most of the movies that I watched were ones that I'd catch on one of our half-dozen television channels late at night or on Saturday afternoons. These were often flicks from the '50s and '60s and, at the conclusion of the [...]
The Orchard is thrilled to embark on an exciting relationship with The Quad Cinema, New York City’s first ever four-screen movie theatre (it opened allllll the way back in 1972) and one of the only independent arthouse movie theatres still thriving in this city. But getting “butts in seats” (to ...

This sink measures 33 by 27 by 7 inches. The kitchen sink. I could do this for another month and still barely scratch the surface of stuff I want to post. I won't though. Instead I'm going to throw a big ole pile of songs at you. All of this is stuff I love, and most of it is stuff I'd never get a chance to blog about normally. Just press play. AC Acoustics - I Messiah, Am Jailer [...]

An album is not an insulated document, but rather something that breathes and grows within an artist's discography. I challenge music fans to not simply find songs or albums that they like (though certainly that has a completely worthwhile place), but to find entire discographies (from acknowledged classics to forgotten albums) to grow with over time. Several weeks ago, my article "Paul McCartney: An Auteur" caused quite a stir. In that piece, I attempt to position Paul McCartney as an artist of the highest standard, one whose entire body of work must be taken seriously. Many of the comments [...]

The renaissance man’s renaissance man returns with a new label and a new sound that eschews the creative atrophy that would have hampered lesser veterans.
The Elliots evade traditional Swedish pop stereotyping, exchanging key-led twinkles and exuberant string-soaked choruses for moody ambience. The strings and keys remain, as seem the Swedish custom, but are presented with bleaker and darker tones that rely more on evolving moods than receptive hooks. On their new album Love|Decay, producer Charles Storm helped the Gothenburg-based [...]
A look at Limerick's first bar boot sale.

Mais non, this ain’t the actor Philippe Leroy, famous for his roles in Le Trou or Milano Calibro 9 . According to this YouTube video , we can gather that French singer Philippe Leroy bleached his mane somewhere along the way and transformed into an artist with a quite particular clothing style, peculiar behaviour, and a haircut that tells stories from a trailer park only the boldest coiffeurs would dare to enter. Before Philippe went there, he looked (see right) pretty much like the guy who stole my sister’s bra at the youth hostel in Antibes [...]
Five for this week: The Pierces - Secret ( mp3 ) Stand by for a classic blogger gripe... With an imminent Polydor album produced by Guy "Coldplay bassist" Berryman, these NYC sisters are suddenly hotly tipped - having been great for bloody ages . First appearing in 2008, this track - part seadog ditty OD'ing on accordions and part chilled-out woodsmokey jazz, speeding up to a furious fairground finale - proves as much. [There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.] Passi [...]

Occasionally I get an idea about assembling a team, but with a theme. I then throw out these challenges on Twitter to see if anyone can help me fill in the teamsheet for a first XI. Last week I was looking for a #RotundXI and got a good few names which I could assemble two teams. Will do that another time though. Today the idea is more inline to what we are all about - a #FootieAndMusicXI . I received some excellent suggestions from [...]
The Divine Comedy's tenth album, Bang Goes the Knighthood, offers no surprises for longtime fans. As usual, Hannon's wit and playful observations find success in a pleasant medium between folk and pop music. This effort, though, is a little more lighthearted around the edges and its lack of ambition results in one of Hannon's most inconsistent efforts to date.

Maxwell Panther You know when radio DJ's act all wanky and refer to someone as a 'friend of the show'. They sounds like cocks don't they? Well I'm going to be a cock (yes, I know what's new - you witty bunch you). Friend of Peenko blog, and also on the Song By Toad label, Maxwell Panther, has a new album out. It's called 'Lovers reBEL' and it's free to download on his Bandcamp page . We like his music, we hop you do too. Popup Popup are back back [...]

Filed under: News , UK What with the Jedward controversy and Simon Cowell's near-tactical insistence of leaving things to the public vote, talent show 'The X Factor' has come under some uncharacteristic flak from all quarters. Yet riding to its rescue is a most unlikely source -- Black Box Recorder and former Auteurs front man Luke Haines . Speaking to the Quietus , the legendarily misanthropic singer has claimed that 'The X Factor' is punk rock for the 21st Century.
