I don't know if the correct term is "blessed," "graced," or "honored," but I felt all of the above when guest DJ Wyndham's funky mix landed in my inbox this month. I can think of no more fitting of a mix in light of Don Cornelius' recent passing. I know you all got soul, so be sure to enjoy these Super Low Prices. Launching a new column is somewhat daunting, as there's usually a lot to explain. But an editor of mine once told me to just dispense with the disclaimers and jump right in. The readers will figure it out, he felt. And besides, plotting out all the thinking that went into the thing is somewhat presumptuous isn't it? After all, you haven't written shit yet, so laying out a bunch of crap that may or may not come to fruition is like showing people the boxes of parts you've ordered for the rusting hulk in the garage. Just shut up and [...]

When it comes to funk in Scotland there is one band who stand head and shoulders above the rest. A band that were embraced in the USA in the 702s with with their heady brew of bass, brass and grooves. I am of course referring to the Average White Band . Formed in 1972 in and around the Dundee area, their influence in modern music is massive are they are reckoned to be the 15th most sampled act in musical history. Their most famous, and biggest selling track is "Pick Up The Pieces" which is one of [...]
Predictably average release from AWB. The Average White Band had its first hit in 1974 with "Pick Up the Pieces" and its last major international chart success in 1980 with "For You for Love", so this 1977 recording finds the band, more or less, at the peak of its commercial success. "Pick Up the Pieces" opens the set, which also includes the smooth "A Love of Your Own", the funkiest of the funky "Sweet & Sour" and an epic version...
AWB sets the stage on fire at Montreux in 1977.
It's monsoon season over here in sunny Sri Lanka, hence the above track title. Taken from the 1979 Feel No Fret LP, it's ALL about the bassline with this AWB ditty - sampled by Gang Starr if memory serves correct?
Do not miss the transcendent Sade and the (already) legendary John Legend on the Soldier of Love Tour.

Anything but, their self given band name, this 40 year old funk band is still managing to cause a stir with supporters around and proving that they are more than just a sum of their parts. Longevity and band member replacements aside, Average White Band's rhythms and songs still stand the adversity of time, and for an original Scottish band to come out from that part of the world and then to acclaim critical notoriety worldwide, then all of the band members featured in its ever-evolving history, each played a seminal part in shaping AWB's legacy. [...]
