Our best wishes and healing vibes go out to Hallie Crawford, the 22-month-old daughter of Avett Brothers' stand-up bassist Bob Crawford, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor following a recent seizure and stroke. Crawford shared the news about his daughter on the Avett's website and also mentioned he was taking a leave of absence from the band. Let's hope Bobby returns to the stage soon, which would mean Hallie is well on the road to recovery. Nels Cline played Duane Allman's Gold [...]
Hailing from Providence, Rhode Island, the Low Anthem have an undeniable pride for local music culture and their small-city roots. There is a humbleness surrounding not only their music, but their at

By Laura McWhorter Someone sat on me on the T once. Yep. On my lap. The person was then quite bothered that I had the nerve to exist let alone sit in her desired seat. Boston doesn't have the friendliest reputation. There are whole days that go by where I don't interact with another human cordially. I, also, don't drive (hence the T-sitting fiasco) so I never get to leave the city but yesterday I made an exception for Day...

It was hard not to get excited about Life is Good 2011 after the lineups were announced in June. Coming off of a wildly well received inaugural year , a plethora of top tier acts were added for this sophomore outing. Each day's closing headliners in Avett Brothers on Saturday and Ray LaMontagne gave festival goers something to eagerly look forward to all day. [All Photos © Parker Harrington] After a week's forecast of torrential rains for all day Saturday, Mother Nature seemed to have second thoughts [...]
They are unmatched for their energy and intensity, and the music is absolutely amazing, so if you love music then you have to do this for yourself!

Devotchka @ Bonnaroo 2011 ( more by Dana (Distortion) Yavin ) I was surprised to see that Devotchka were going to be in the area this weekend. The occasion is that they're opening for the Avett Brothers at PNC Bank Arts Center in NJ on Friday night (9/23). Tickets are still on sale. All dates for both bands are listed below. In related news, somebody in Devotchka also plays trumpet [...]

Love was in the air at the Avett brothers concert last night - even for a cynic such as myself it was hard not to feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The band bounced onto the stage and kicked things off with one of my personal favorites "Die Die Die," which had the crowd in the palm of their hand right from the opening notes.Like you would expect from an Avett Brothers show the energy was through the roof and there was more than enough foot stomping to go around. [...]
Last year's innaugural Life Is Good Festival had a lot of good things going for it. A great location minutes south of Boston, a philanthropic mission to raise money for children in need and a strong bloodline as a Superfly production (e.g. the group that puts on a little festival called Bonnaroo). In what was probably a savvy move, the festival's debut seemed to target both the back-to-school college students as well as families with young children. Last year's lineup included some of my favorites (Dr. Dog, Mavis Staples), but overall skewed a little [...]

Ever since this May's Paul Simon cover songs collection, a follow-up starring Bruce Springsteen — a figure similarly oft-cited as inspiration to our favorite indie acts — has been in the works. The hard part, though, has been that there are dozens of versions of the Boss floating around, some brilliant and others falling a bit short despite showing plenty of reverence for their hero. Given Frightened Rabbit's recent tribute to the blue-collar icon and Kurt Vile's forthcoming studio take on "Downbound Train," now feels like a good time to compile the best or [...]

Anna Calvi Sitting round the backstage campfire listening to La Brass Banda's tuba player running through a melancholy passage from Bach, we reflected on a Haldern that had an element of Sehnsucht as well as the usual industrial-strength dollops of hippy dippy Zuckerzeit . Maybe it was the weather, (glowering, leaden, ever-threatening), maybe it was the zealous and clearly alien security measures brought in, we believe, as a national response to the tragedy [...]
Well, after a marvelous summer in San Francisco, I'm packing my bags and heading back to Brooklyn. I love Brooklyn, I really do. But I'm a California girl at heart, and the West Coast is imprinted on me like DNA. So, my move back east comes with an onslaught of contradictory emotions — excitement and sadness, elation, and heartbreak. It's hard feeling such a pull to two places, but I know I can count on my handy music library to help me sort through the confusion. While this playlist veers a little more on [...]

Social Distortionhas been omnipresent on the road since releasing their first album in six years, Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes , earlier this year. They've extended their tour once, been announced as festivals headliners , and even scored an opening position for Foo Fighters. And yet they just keep on going. . . The Cali punk-rockers have just added a few more end-of-the-year dates with recent touring companion Chuck Ragan. Social D will also be playing a few spots with - get this - indie folk favorites The [...]
I don't know about you, but I love a nice poetic story about the creation of an equally poetic band. Something that makes the music they present sound all the more home-grown and full of bold character. Oh Ruin, which is taken from the surname of the band's creator Eoin O'Ruainigh, are a pleasure to [...]
This Nashville based indie band got their name from the Ben Stiller movie Heavyweights and had The Avett Brothers' producer Doug Williams work on their most recent album. Need I say more?

NJ's very own River City Extension have been added to The Avett Brothers stop at Homdel's PNC Bank Arts Center .

It's like The Tallest Man on Earth , Mumford and Sons and The Avett Brothers had a blissed-out, stripped-down baby. And that baby was called Saintseneca . And the baby was good. Saintseneca hails from Columbus (the Ohio version), and according to their Tumblr will "play anywhere, especially where it echoes and there's a good floor to stomp on." Which frankly just about sums up what you need to know before you press play on their debut full-length release Last . [...]
