The B-52's @ Roseland Ballroom 10/31/2007 Party Out Of Bounds / Mesopotamia / Pump / Private Idaho / Ultraviolet / Give Me Back My Man / Strobe Light / Julia of the Spirits / Roam / Funplex / Hot Corner / Channel Z / Keep This Party Going / Love Shack // Planet Claire / Rock Lobster / Love in the Year 3000 I promise you that the fact that I posted about both the B-52's and the Rapture just recently was a total coincidence -- I didn't even know [...]
Malcolm McLaren "Love Will..." - I went to see Anton Corbijn's Ian Curtis biopic with a few of my friends over the weekend, and we all came out of it agreeing on three things: 1) Despite co-writing exactly one great song ("Love Will Tear Us Apart"), being an epileptic, getting married at a very young age, and committing suicide at 23, Ian Curtis was a dreadfully dull human being. Maybe that's an overstatement, but there's certainly not enough in his brief life to support the plot of a feature-length film. [...]

Today in Music History: In 1969, John and Yoko flew to Canada with the Plastic Ono Band to perform at the Rock & Roll Revival Show, Toronto, with The Doors, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. So I took a vacation and upon returning to the work force it seems that homercat is being punished for taking time off. Bastards have been working the dog piss out of me. Leaving homercat with very little downtime. So let's go over some highlights from the past few weeks. Upon arriving [...]

A couple of weeks ago, I found myself contemplating the parallels between Bridezillas and the " two minutes hate " of Orwell's 1984 , when I happened to jog loose a random memory about a story I read in grade school. It was about a future society where the populace was kept in line though a ubiquitous food additive that made those who ingested it susceptible to subliminals embedded in the (government-controlled) television broadcasts. A teenage chemistry whiz manages to unravel the secrets of the totalitarian state's social control program, but like Winston Smith, ends up learning [...]

In a report commissioned by a mobile phone company that sells dialtones, a psychology lecturer has created a formula for a "feel-good" song . Mysteriously not included: the possible decrease in happiness caused when cheery songs are used in dialtones. Perhaps there will be a follow-up: I Just Called To Say I'm Ruining Your Favorite Songs . However, demonstrating a keen understanding of modern pop psychology, Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic has provided a list of top 10 "feel-good songs". The Boo Radleys ' peppy "Wake Up Boo!" landed the top spot, and on the [...]

Live from the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport Men's Restroom, it's Senator Larry Craig's Dance Machine ! "Good evening, everyone. Let's get this party started with a big favorite where I'm from...The B-52's "Private Idaho" ! I know it gets this Idahoan's privates movin'! You might even say it's a real toe tapper! "And how do you know when you've made it big in the '80s dance world? When Bobby O rips you off blind, that's how! Here's his studio [...]

The B-52's formed in Athens Georgia 1976 after a drunken night at a Chinese restaurant. The name comes from the bouffant wigs that are a part of the band's distinctive look, and not the airplane of the same name contrary to popular belief. Their quirky take on the emerging new wave and unusual guitar tunings set them apart from the pack. The band gained popularity pretty much from it's inception, but couldn't break into the US top 40 charts until their 1989 release 'Cosmic Thing' which contained the infamous track 'Love Shack' which [...]

* This is a reprise of an old post in answer to a request from fred' - cheers for stopping by. Remember, if there's anything from the archives that you want to hear again, have a scour through the pages in the right hand column and get in touch.* Following a vinyl excavation that led to the SCARILY popular Muppets post, I delved into my B-52's back catalogue to give you some nuggets a bit further off the beaten track. The B-52's - There's [...]

Comin' atcha first thing every Monday morning, it's The Pony Track, a super-fantastic short distance dedication to BadmintonStamps Collective founding member and internationally renown symbol for musical excellence Aaron "Pony" Child. No fancy links, no clever write-ups, 'cause these awesome songs don't need no splainin'. So c'mon, ride the pony!

If it seems like I took a TV break following The Sopranos finale , that assumption would be half-right. I actually spent some time catching up with summer's best show, the Denis Leary post-9/11 firefighter drama Rescue Me . I resisted initially because of Leary's got some some scary dramatic skeletons in his closet ( Two if by Sea anyone?) and I've never found myself particularly drawn to police or firefighter dramas, but I overcame my trepidation and am thankful, as it truly is the best thing on [...]
I finally got to check out Knocked Up yesterday at the oh-so-freezing Movie Tavern. Seriously, did their fridge break and they had to keep the beers in the theater? Temperature aside, I thought it was a really great comedy and decided to translate that love into mix form. Mixed Up MP3: Colin ...
The B-52's debut album is one of the most fun albums I've ever heard. You can listen to it regardless of your mood, and you're practically guaranteed to have a good time. Also it's an album that I include in my list of top 10 debut albums ever. The others are in no specific order : The Velvet Underground & Nico, Talking Heads - '77, The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy, Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted, The Violent Femmes - s/t, Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures, Television - Marquee Moon, Devo - Q- Are We Not Men [...]
For displaced Southerners, the 1984 documentary, Athens, Ga: Inside/Out, is both the cause and cure for homesickness. Available on DVD, the film documents the Athens, GA music scene of the mid '80s, and in the process captures some truly historic performances; one being (reportedly) R.E.M.'s first performance of "Swan Swan H" in a deserted [...]
Happy Earth Day to you, and Happy Birthday to me (I like to call it my B-Earth Day). In honour of this special day, I've decided to offer up four special tracks, all with a similar theme; I hope you like. I got an early Birthday gift this week when Release The Stars , Rufus Wainwright 's new album magically landed on my doorstep. It's fantastic. I can't wait until you all get to hear it. It's a cohesive album that you can [...]
Isn't it funny that more songs in this episode were released in the seventies than eighties? Yes, three 1978 songs are featured in this suppose-ed eighties snapshot. Why you don't ask? Well why not? My standards have dropped already, so why not push them further? No I think the main reason is debut-album syndrome. The condition so many bands have where they struggle to beat the quality of their first album. So while most of the artists here would belong best to the eighties, they're best song may be found elsewhere. Now previously I would have picked a different song [...]

it's tonight, peoples. B-52's "Dance This Mess Around"

So this weekend is the debut of an event I helped brainstorm called Underground Runway ... if yer in the Bay Area this Saturday night I encourage ya to check it out... At our debut this Saturday, multiple local designers are to be featured in the premiere live event hosted by Malika (of MTV's Making The Band ) to be held at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco on Saturday March 3rd 2007, with doors and VIP cocktail reception starting at 8:30 pm. They say that 'If you don't know where you came from, you'll never get to where you're going'. But if you don't know where you're going you'll probably end up in the bad part of town & get your Italian leather boots stolen. What does it all mean? I means it's New Wave Tuesday. And I know, why New Wave Tuesday & not New Wave Tuesday or Thursday? There are no days that start with an 'N' so it doesn't matter which day it's on. Right? RIGHT. Here's some of [...]
