But for the B-52s , the entire 'Cosmic Thing' album helped them heal after the death of bandmate Ricky Wilson. "It was very therapeutic once we started writing," Keith Strickland, the band's former drummer who took over Wilson's guitar duties in the late '80s, tells Spinner. "In some ways, it was a way to remember Ricky. We became closer because we had a strong awareness of how impermanent [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , You Oughta Know , Canada The all-in-the-family dynamic has always been an interesting part of music making -- and marketing. It worked for the White Stripes , kept Oasis interesting and made ABBA 's pop ballads all the more emotional back when the quartet were two attractive, happily married couples. This almost-scientific appeal is also working for the Balconies , the indie pop-rock trio made up of lovers Liam Jaeger (drums) and Jacquie Neville (vocals/guitar), along with her younger [...]
My niece's reaction to David Bowie got me thinking about musical variety. Kids haven't been programmed to think that weird music is weird yet. In the hopes of coaxing her away from the insipid oldies music that my mom makes her listen to, I wanted to craft a mixtape that would introduce my niece to stuff that I liked when I was younger.

Well, come New Year's Day -- America's adopted National Hangover Day -- you'll be thinking those plans were a bad idea when the headache kicks in and you can barely make a fist. Filed under: News , Television Business time has ended. New Zealand's fourth most popular comedy-folk duo Flight of the Conchords have ended their television series . Fans had speculated that the show was finished but now it's official, as stars Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie and co-creator James Bobin announced on their website . "We've noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend [...]
On the official website for Louisville, KY's HullabaLOU Music Festival , there are two separate definitions given. One for hullabaloo , which is a noun that means "Great noise or excitement; uproar." Then there's one for HullabaLOU , which (according to the site) is a noun that means, "A three day summer music festival July 23-25, 2010 at Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, KY." They're missing another definition, unfortunately. It's another noun, and for HullabaLOU , and it's something along the lines of "a three day summer weekend in hell, likely filled with upset [...]

The idea that Earth has been visited by aliens at some point in the distant past is not a new one. In Sumer, the alien Gods were known as the Anunnaki. While in Greece, they are known as Annodoti and in the Celtic lore, the Tuatha de Danaan. Tthe Semetic scriptures (Torah, Talmud, Old Testament, and other Apocryphal texts like the Book of Enoch), call them The Nephilim, The Sons of God, or The Watchers. We are told the gods themselves had their own monarchy, with laws of succession similar to our own, and they built a [...]

While not technically a Halloween song (is there actually one besides the Rocky Horror Picture Show or Monster Mash?), Rock Lobster by the B-52's is a sort of weird song with a ton of slightly spooky organs. I love it though, finding a Rock Lobster out of the blue would be pretty scary. That makes it Halloweenie to me, plus everybody had matching towels! Go eat some candy. Athens, GA was a Mecca for fresh young bands in the late '70s and early '80s. While local heroes the B-52's and R.E.M. took the lion's share of attention, there was an unfortunate disconnect between Pylon 's quirky brand of angular pop and commercial success. Despite their greatness, Pylon imploded only a few years into their career and called it quits in 1991 after three albums. Though the band played a few local reunion shows beginning in 2005, founding guitarist Randy Bewley died of a heart attack in Athens back in February. Thankfully, DFA Records has stepped in [...]
Filed under: News , New Music When 15-year-old Killian Mansfield decided to record his debut album last year, it had to be the best he could ever do. He knew there wasn't another shot at it, no follow-up to refine any novice slips or incomplete artistic visions. This was his only chance. Within a year, the amateur musician who grew up in New York City and lived in the small village of West Shokan, 20 minutes north of Woodstock, NY, passed away after five years of battling a rare form of cancer called synovial [...]

I just stumbled upon this edit in my music library. The original Love Shack by the always wonderful B-52s is a classic , no doubt about that. This obscure, info-lacking edit is somewhat dark, somewhat mysterious, and somewhat funky. Keeping the samples to a minimum and then repeating proves to be a really effective strategy for a booming disco track. - Love Shack (Unknown Edit) Graphic high five: Today and Tomorrow
The weather's getting colder, but the music's getting hotter. October has seen a bevy of stellar new releases and this week is no different. Feast your eyes and ears on my picks of the week.

The Austin City Limits Music Festival celebrated its eighth anniversary this year, and it's gone beyond being Texas' little festival that could. It's now its own destination. All tickets to the three-day festival sold out earlier than they ever had before, and the lineup was one of its most diverse in its brief history. Tucked away in expansive Zilker Park in Austin, ACL usually feels like a musical marathon. Unlike other festivals that take place on remote locations where you have to camp or in the middle of cities where you can walk a few feet from the [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive New York City dance-rock combo the Bravery hit the road earlier this month for a series of dates in anticipation of the release of their new album, 'Stir the Blood.' "I very much feel like we are making music only because we like it, as opposed to doing it as a reaction to something else," frontman Sam Endicott tells Spinner. These days, the Bravery, who were considered part of a new rave revival surrounding their 2005 self-titled debut, and [...]

The internet can be a very wonderful thing indeed. Especially when it brings such a warm and encouraging response as we received for our posting of The Complete Works of (The) Flowers. Among the many appreciative comments we had not one but two from the Head Flower herself, Hilary Morrison, a woman whose voice has left an indelible impression on anyone who ever listened to the clutch of singles and ep tracks that her band gave us. We were absolutely thrilled to hear from her, let me tell you. You can read our original post and the comments that followed [...]
Cobra Lillies are a free-for-all freak folk band made up of several Eastside bands. The band began as a side project for The Monolators, and every time I see them they have new members and routines, which have included stomp dancing, cheerleaders, and tonight a flamboyant fashion show sketch to open the show. There were bicycle bells ringing throughout the night and all sorts of weird, down-homey folksy instruments.
