Hey! It's been a minute, huh? Yeah, well, "life happens" and leaves little time for blogging. Anyways, one of the things that has been happening (or at the least the planning for the happening) is an awesome SXSW showcase I'm helping to put together. Myself along with Homoground, Feminist Music Geek, International Girl Gang Underground, and Soul Ponies have put together a great lineup of feminist and/or queer and/or awesome ally-filled bands and performers to hit the stage Wednesday, March 14 at Cheer Up Charlie's - right here in beautiful Austin, TX!! I'm super stoked on this event and am [...]
If ever there was a video that highlighted the surreal art-hippie aesthetic and wonderful weirdness that is the Back Pockets , this is it. Want to know if you might be a fan of the collective's psychedelic dream-pop? Do you think you can handle the sensory overload of their eccentric and (sometimes) absurdist performance art? HEY WATCH THIS VIDEO AND FIND OUT. It's like a goddamn Rorschach test. Personally, I find "Beauty" the song to be somewhat pedestrian. But this vid? HOLY SHIT. Whoever conjured up this little slice of madcap awesomeness needs to share their drugs [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: The Mountain Goats w/ Nurses Saturday, January 28 The Earl - 466 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta 30316 SOLD OUT! I hope you took advantage of the opportunity while it lasted because tickets for this sucker have long been gone. It seems slightly inconceivable that the same group who sold out the Bowery Ballroom in NYC for three consecutive nights wouldn't be playing a larger venue in town like, say, the Variety Playhouse or the Buckhead Theatre, but for those fans lucky [...]

2011 was the year I dove headlong into local music. I listened to just about everything I could get a hold of, scouring through Facebook, Bandcamp and Soundcloud in my attempts to discover as many local artists and as much local music as I possibly could. But even now I feel as if there's so much out there that I'm missing out on. New bands and artists seem to to be sprouting up every day and the landscape of Atlanta music is constantly in flux, morphing and shifting into something unique and different. And so while the list [...]

It wasn't that long ago that I was wondering aloud about whether or not this list was relevant or necessary, or whether it even had enough quality content to support it. But like a lot of things in life, you have to look back to get the whole story. As I began digging through old posts in search of viable candidates, it quickly became clear that the issue wasn't whether or not there were going to be enough qualified entrants, but how I was going to be able to cull the list down to a final ten. I've [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Black Cobra w/ Zoroaster, The Body Friday, December 16 The Drunken Unicorn - 736 Ponce De Leon Place NE in Atlanta 30306 Admission $10 ADV / $12 DOS / Purchase Tickets If you like your music loud and heavy, Black Cobra have you covered from just about every angle. The Bay Area duo can serve up monstrously thick slabs of doom and sludge as easily as they can spin off into a frenzied din of psychedelic drone. [...]

Back in 2009, I listened to approximately 75 records that came out of Atlanta that year. This year, I blogged about roughly 75 records, and for every album I discussed, there were at least five I listened to and didn't blog about. The quantity of music being made in this city is growing exponentially, and the Atlanta music scene runs extraordinarily deep. So needless to say, this was the most difficult year-end list to put together yet. On a technical note, my 2011 year-end list eligibility extends through the 2010 holiday season because I like to be [...]

10. Oryx and Crake : "Unbound" 9. From Exile featuring Emil Werstler : "A Warm Place" (Nine Inch Nails Cover) 8. Slowriter : "Black Leaves" 7. Damon Moon And The Whispering Drifters : "Motherless Child" Damon Moon and the Whispering [...]
I've been going back and forth in my head about whether to add a Best Local Videos category to my year-end lists, but I'm concerned that there isn't enough quality material to make for a bona fide quality list. Or at least that's how I felt before watching this new video for the Back Pockets' "Break Up Song." With its lovely melding of abstract artiness and brazen sensuality, the video breathes new life into one of 20112s most captivating local tracks (released last August via the Fast Cloud Slow Cloud EP) and would certainly give any [...]

SXSW kicks off as I type. I am still here at home in the ATL but far finer elements of Atlanta will be represented in Austin, Texas. If you're on your way to SXSW from points in Georgia or elsewhere, several must see Atlanta bands are headed to Austin. The best Atlanta based event will likely be ATL Yeah! Organized by Jeremiah of the Favorite Gentlemen crew, ATL Yeah! is a free event from Noon and 7pm on Friday at the Red Fez. The nine band line up will feature some of our [...]

I've been straying away from posting about Deerhunter much these days as they get plenty of press everywhere else. But their performance on Letterman last night that included Cole Alexander ( Black Lips ) and Adam Bruneau ( Back Pockets ) was particularly noteworthy. Really nice jamout at the end. © Davy Minor for Ohmpark , 2011. | Permalink | No comment | [...]
