…and he’s got us feeling alright. The Bad Plus: Made Possible Every time the Bad Plus comes out with a new album, I say the same thing, but this may be my favorite album of theirs yet. While they’ve staked their claim as a piano trio that delves into deconstructed pop covers of the nth degree, their strength has always been in their original material and Made Possible is all those strengths on steroids: powerful, cerebral calisthenics, off-angle freeform, jaunty groovers and their patented gloriously slow build to emotional climax. [...]

Earlier this fall two of the best jazz trios out there, The Bad Plus and Medeski, Martin & Wood , released new albums. The former’s studio effort, Made Possible, finds the band cutting through the sharp passages and beautiful moments we’ve come to expect from them, along with some branching beyond the purely acoustic aesthetic for the first time. The latter’s live album, Free Magic, is culled from an '07 tour that found them eschewing their electric arsenal (or John’s anyway) for an all-acoustic show for the first time (for a full tour). Both releases are busy [...]

The light dims and the drummer’s metal brushes gently caress the snare. Relaxed, chuckling voices surround you. As you sip on your rum, cachaça, or rootbeer, you look around and see posters of every smooth-looking Blue Note pioneer you can think of. The bassist plays a slow walking line and you can already feel yourself loosening up. You could step outside the door and be anywhere - a sandy beach in Rio, an alley in New Orleans, a square in Warsaw, or an artsy quarter of Harlem. Wherever you actually are, these symptoms indicate that you have stepped inside one [...]
The Bad Plus has been putting out records for over ten years now, and jazz has always remained a cornerstone of the band's style during that time. However, it's not like this trio is just a jazz project. While the band unarguably delivers improvisational music performed with drums, keys, and upright bass, elements from other genres always make their way into the music. It's like the Bad Plus sneaks them in under the cover of darkness, referencing everything from rock to electronic music in their ever-growing discography. "Seven Minute Mind" is a track from the trio's [...]

As part of this week's Spotlight with Conveyor we've already offered you a stream of their great debut self titled album, and an interview with the four piece . Now we've got another special treat: a Desert Island Discs to give you a bit of insight into the band's musical world. You can read the original pitch (from way back in 2010), or for the condensed version: it’s basically the artist – in this case Conveyor – selecting [...]

The Bad Plus played Nathan Phillips last Sunday as the second half of a double bill with Hiromi . The trio has been playing together for over a decade. They grew popular for their creative re-invention of rocks tunes; from Nirvana to David Bowie. Throughout it all they remain a high calibre jazz act. This time around, the band has shaken things up with the addition of fiery saxophonist Joshua Redman . It made for an intense pairing. Think jazz, with a bebop saxophone, fuelled by driving beats that were at times on the threshold of hard [...]
Described by Rolling Stone as "about as badass as highbrow gets", avant garde jazz trio The Bad Plus arrive in Ireland next week for a series of shows. This tour will see them presenting the multi-media show On Sacred Ground , based around Stravinsky's Rite of Spring , the famed ballet that caused a riot on its premiere, opened the door to 20th Century music and animated Disney's Fantasia. State spoke to the band's Ethan Iverson. Who are you and where are you from? The three of us [...]

Although Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" has no relationship to the Marvel comic book superhero who bears the same name, the song's protagonist shares an equally fantastic origin. The track was released in 1970 on Black Sabbath's sophomore album Paranoid . The track received it's theme and name when Ozzy Osbourne first heard the main guitar riff for the track. He said that the riff "sounded like a big iron bloke walking around." It eventually developed from "Iron Bloke" to "Iron Man." From that inspiration, Geezer Butler took to writing the lyrics which reference a man who travels into the [...]
The surface comparisons were nearly impossible to ignore and, I have to admit, I immediately associated the Bad Plus to Medeski Martin and Wood. But while the Bad Plus were just as rhythmically centered as MMW, the music as represented on These Are The Vistas steered back toward more traditional jazz elements. If anything, the Bad Plus made better use [...]

This opening track from Nirvana's 1991 album Nevermind has spawned a whole lot of covers - many of which are instrumental, the vocal melody seems to speak to jazz piano players especially. Female vocalists also like taking a shot at this grunge classic - we round out with a few male-vox covers, a guest appearance from The Muppets and you've got - 10 covers of Smells Like Teen Spirit. The Contestants: Artist : Tori Amos Album : [...]

Last Tuesday night The Hot Sardines (@hotsardines) opened for The Bad Plus (@thebadplus) at City Winery, a perfect lineup for the relaxed venue. With tables surrounding the stage and the option to grab a fantastic meal during some classy jazz, it's absolutely nothing like the standard NYC indie setup. The Hot Sardines were a reserved three piece with lots of smiles. They play the kind of jazz you listen to on your old record player and pretend life is in black and white. It's [...]

Wilco @ Jazz Fest 2011 - photo by Justin Ward As fall comes into full swing this week, we're getting a really nice mix of interesting shows in NYC with some especially noteworthy bands in the indie rock and folk realms. Starting with the more eccentric artists, there's tUnE-YaRds @ Le Poisson Rouge (tonight), Cymbals Eat Guitars @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (Wed), the triumphant return of the Rapture @ Webster Hall (Thurs), and Superhuman Happiness doing two nights at Zebulon in Williamsburg (Fri-Sat). For something eclectic but a [...]
