Serious Bedtime The Balconies are an Ottawa three-piece who have leagues of followers in their hometown. Recently, the Ottawa Xpress took a poll and found that the threesome were voted by the Ottawa public as both the best Rock/Pop/Dance/Other Band and Best New Musical Act. As evidence by this, I'm pretty late on this one, also every other Canadian blogger has tipped you to their music. But, their music has hit my ears quite nicely this time and I'm ready to dive right into their self-titled album, released independently on Sept. 22nd. [...]

November 18th, I decided to hit up Irene's Pub. It was a start for my week for checking out live music. This being one of three shows this week. Playing at the lovely venue were: The Balconies Modernboys Moderngirls All I can is that maybe the people at Irene's Pub weren't expecting the show to be very loud last night. Since the venue is known for folky rock style of [...]
The Balcones are a three piece from Ottawa, who have recently relocated to Toronto to attend school. They consist of Jacquie Neville, Steve Neville and Liam Jaeger. On the CD you can hear the occasional three part harmonies for mostly upbeat, catchy song with super catchy riffs. The stand out song on the CD has to be Battle Royale . I played this for Ricky and his response to me was "Man, that Balconies song you played for me was awesome". My response to him was "Yah, too bad it is the [...]
It was a wonderful November 3rd Tuesday evening to see two great bands whom I've seen various times when they play in Ottawa. The bands in question are: Dinosaur Bones from Toronto The Balconies from Ottawa now living in Toronto. Both bands need no introduction since I've covered them on this site alot. This was the first time for myself to attend this show at Algonquin College's The Observatory. Its a nice place [...]

Frank Yang Last Thursday night was spent at The Garrison, the newly - opened west-end venue that'll be home to the final year of Wavelength as well as a plethora of other local music happenings. A fine example of this was this evening's bill, featuring bands with long names from near, far and sorta-near-but-not-that-close: The Wilderness Of Manitoba , Slow Down Molasses and Olenka & The Autumn Lovers . Slow Down Molasses represented the "far", hailing from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and were up first. I'd spent some [...]

Well, it's that time of the year that every Canadian music blogger loves the most: I (Heart) Music 's carefully calculated compiling of The Hottest Bands in Canada . Matthew is the head maestro of that high quality music blog from Ottawa and what he does is he asks several of the country's finest music aficionados (and me) for their personal picks of the 10 hottest bands in Canada. He then takes our respective lists and, using a team of highly respected scientists and mathematicians, puts together the final selections. I was flattered to once again be [...]

Frank Yang White Rabbits have got it covered in the name-dropping department. Via TBD Records , they're labelmates with a little British outfit called Radiohead and their critically-hailed second album It's Frightening was produced by Britt Daniel, who sometimes moonlights in a band popular in some circles called Spoon . Yeah, the Brooklyn sextet have got plenty of ammo for cocktail parties, but it doesn't necessarily tell you much about their actual music, does it. Well the Britt Daniel [...]

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie Lipgloss - Land Of Lords This band from Buenos Aires released their first EP a couple of months ago and Land Of Lords is our favorite song from it. Lipgloss sound like they've been listening to British rock all their life and you sure can feel the influence of bands like The Stone Roses at the end of the song, with the psychedelic guitars and all. If you like it, [...]
