The Bar Kays - Son of Shaft Dig it!

The second SAVED! compilation gets righteous on your asses with a churchful of glorious '70s soul – and it does so without going for the easy option of all those Stevie Wonder songs about God being a zillion lightyears away with whom you should have a talk (and did George Michael realise that he was singing a song of praise to God when he had a hit with Mary J Blige?). While neither Stevie, Aretha nor Marvin feature here, Al Green does, though with a song that precedes his lesser Reverend Green phase. And, of course, Curtis Mayfield [...]
Filed under: Exclusive , The Hit List Though he was from Texas, like a lot of musicians, sax great King Curtis sure did love him some Memphis. The veteran session player had his biggest hit as [...]
File under, music I want to follow me from bar to bar on a long, bingeful night: Bar-Kays, "A Hard Day's Night" (1968). Also file under: Friday Night. Also see: the entirety of the wonderful Stax-Volt: The Complete Singles 1959-1968 . The Bar-Kays, "A Hard Day's Night"

Wheeeeew, big news courtesy of SPIN . A whole slew of distinguished artists will be getting together to create a tribute album for Buddy Holly . Artists contributing covers to this project include The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Julian Casablancas (of The Strokes) and....... ah hell just read the image above and you'll get a good idea of what this album is about. Honouring the late great Buddy Holly, who died at 22 in a Minnesota plane crash with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens on [...]

I'm not sure what The Bar-Kays are looking at because Jasper 's new school remixes are down below. Cheesy? Sure. Accurate? Yes. These are definitely ready for the Summer season... If it ever gets here. The Bar-Kays - Holy Ghost (Jasper Remix) Zapp & Roger - Do It (Jasper Remix) Kyle S
Over two hours of smokin' hot blues guitar from one of the masters.

As 2Pac, Eazy-E and Biggie all once said, "We live for the funk, we die for the funk". They said it best, so let's get funky! The Bar-Kays were a popular soul, R&B and funk group formed in the 19602s. These guys are arguably the toughest bass slappers in the 19602s and their always apparent horn sections has been flooding dancefloors since your parents' era. The movie Superbad unearthed some of these timeless gems to use for their soundtrack and now I fee like it's SpacePack's civil duty to bring them to your [...]

Vernon Burch was considered a child prodigy of sorts when he made his performance debut with the Delfonics as a teenager. Later he moved on to join the reconstituted Bar Kays on their early 70s albums, then bolted for a solo career after their contract with Stax ran out. He did not receive the fame his former band mates would later experience, but the guitarist recorded for United Artists, Columbia and Chocolate City during a six-year period the produced the minor hits "Frame of Mind" and "Give It To Me." Today his reputation is [...]

Filed under: Twisted Tales The plane crash that killed Otis Redding on Dec. 10, 1967 also took the lives of four teenage members of the Bar-Kays. At the time of the accident, the instrumental group, which had just been chosen as Redding's touring band, was poised to become the second-shift house band of the R&B hit machine at Stax Records behind Booker T. 's MGs. With a name inspired by a Bacardi rum billboard in their native Memphis, [...]

What do I do on a slow music day? I post old jams that I love . This track was created by some gentlemen I've come to respect and, from living here in Memphis, been honored to meet many times. At SXSW '09, they rocked the rafters at the Memphis Music Foundation Showcase, a night many people (including me) still remember well. This is from The Bar-Kays ' 1982 album Propositions (which is, for all intents and purpose, out of print except on very expensive import). Dig it. [...]

KazuKazuKazu Bar-Kays You Made A Change in My Life Woah, majorly fun weekend, starting with a Thursday evening meal with Richmond, Mike and Chris at Kazu. Hands-down the best Japanese food I've had in Montreal, which might seem like faint praise, but it was really astonishing. A lot of the items we wanted to try were sold out (like the Tuna Belly), but we still had some amazing pork back, the 48 hour pork dish, [...]

It's a gloomy, rainy day here in New York City, a trend that is supposed to continue on through the rest of the weekend. In this kind of weather I usually find myself turning to the funky sounds of some vintage soul music to help put me in a better mood, so here are a slew of songs that should distract you from the gray skies and help to kick start the weekend... We kick things off with The Bar-Kays and the funky instrumental title [...]

F or two people who have yet to release their first full-length album, Holy Ghost!'s Nick Millheiser (right) and Alex Frankel are more popular than you'd expect. But there's a good explanation- they're damn talented at what they do. They make the kind of music I wish I could make (but can't, don't and never will). Take a listen to any of their songs (seriously, just pick one, they're all fantastic) and hear it for yourself. Even if you don't love Holy Ghost!, your favorite musician probably does. It's no accident they've been called on to remix the likes of [...]

I just can't get over losin' you And so if I seem, broken and blue Walk on by, walk on by Foolish pride, that's all that I have left Thanks to a wonderful teacher in high school, I was fortunate enough to be exposed to the entire Stax singles catalog almost immediately upon becoming interested in 60's R+B. I went from one cd, Otis Redding's Greatest Hits, Volume 2 to The Complete Stax Singles 1959-1968. I think a lot of folks can hand something this comprehensive to a [...]

All right. I've been sitting on these way too long , so let's get this done! Everyone who knows anything about music or pop culture knows Isaac Hayes' iconic " Theme From Shaft. " Here are ten of the best recordings related to that track. The legendary hi-hat riff was first heard in Otis Redding's 1966 version of "Try A Little Tenderness," which had been arranged by Ike while Booker T. Jones was at university. Five years later, Hayes reused the riff, and a stuttering wah-wah guitar, to secure his status as a legend of [...]

Jimi's work in progress at the time of his death was shaping up to be a triple LP. Instead, Hendrix goes and saturates himself to death with red wine and all we got was a measly single LP, released posthumously as First Rays of the New Rising Sun . I mean, we'll take it. It's nasty. But if the entire project was going to sound this good, well then that just sucks, doesn't it. Jimi Hendrix — My Friend Jimi Hendrix — [...]
