Scottish Kate is a great friend of this blog and has often offered her (sometimes pithy) opinions on the world of music - and very good taste she has too. She also runs the always excellent (sometimes pithy), and often provocative blog A Burdz Eye View for all things Scottish (of course), political and musical. Here are her aural selections for 2011. The Burd’s Best Songs of 2011 Well it doesn’t get any easier. Though given that all my old schticks are in here aplenty [...]

The Barettas, an all-girl trio from Hamilton, Ontario, look like they’ve jumped out of the pages of a pulp novel. ‘Lipstick Guitar Vengeance’ perhaps, or ‘I Buried My Axe Deep in His Head’ (neither of these books exist as far as we know, but that doesn’t mean you can go and steal those titles). The name, the look, the background (one of the members learnt to play guitar while serving a school suspension) enhance this aesthetic. As far as the music is concerned, Katie, Carly and Kate play rock ’n’ roll with a healthy helping of grit. There’re elements [...]

( email | facebook ) Sometimes, the musicians say it better than we ever could. To wit, The Barettas, in their own words: We’re The Barettas, a trio from Hamilton, Ontario. It’s a city known for its industrial decay, grittiness, and blue-collar roots. There are no trust funds in Hamilton, so each of us has taken on a couple jobs, usually a combination of cleaning houses during the day, and tending bar at night. The reward, and real purpose for these jobs is that it lets us make music and [...]

The Barettas are an all-girl trio from Hamilton, Ontario that clean houses by day and bartend by night, killing their frustration and worries by filling any and all spare time with music. Off the bat, The Barettas sound something like Gwen Stefani fronting a pop-leaning garage rock band, but The Barettas are a lot more straightforward and gritty than No Doubt. More than that, The Barettas possess a certain spirit of mid-'40s to early '50s class, and pair style with attitude; they're a band that embodies the determined, proud character of Rosie the Riveter. Lead singer and guitarist [...]

Here we are again. A mix of the best tracks we posted in February and a few new ones too. Twenty seven cracking songs to immerse yourself in! Download O’Death – Bugs mp3 (from Outside) Echoes of their ramshackle and punkish best, but this time it is cocooned in something more subtle and thoughtful too. Download The Whalers – That Rabbit mp3 (from How The Ship Goes Down) Playing a wonderfully straightforward blend of thudding, bass-heavy rock that makes us think of QotSA melded with [...]
It's time once again for Weekly Roundup , a place to recap some of the week's interesting and important news and share some of the great songs and videos we dug over the past seven days. Yes, that includes Radiohead.

When you're in a band with an average age of 22 you might expect to have a little energy. If that band is made up of 3 women straight out of a decaying and gritty steeltown like Hamilton, Ontario, then the energy goes up. If one of the band members travels daily into the wealthier surrounding cities as part of a house-cleaning crew (it pays for the gas for the next gig) then you can put that energy into overdrive. Add plenty of attitude to that and you're left with The Barettas. Formed in 2008, Kate Kimberley (Bass), [...]

Sometime around late January I realized I was completely and utterly bored with my music archive. To shake things up I'm trying an experiment: for the remainder of 2011 I will only listen to music released in 2011. This is an account of the year. This Week's Purchases Dynamite Steps The Twilight Singers Buy It Hey, have you heard the new Afghan Whigs [...]

Apparently there are no trust funds in the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, so Katie, Kate, and Carly - aka The Barettas - have to keep day jobs on the side of playing music. However with any justice in the world, they should be able to pay the rent (and then some) with their royalties in a not too distant future. They don't seem to in much of a hurry though as they are generously letting us all download their 73 single "Touche", a garage rock-pop-punk ditty with a b-side - "Black Sheep" - in the [...]
Touche Hamilton Ontario's trio the Barettas recently popped into my radar, as they've released a 73 for free on their bandcamp and I couldn't help but share this one. It's sort of a garage, rockabilly post punk band. Super catchy, fun to listen to and full of energy. Check it out. http://www.myspace.com/thebare ttas

The Baretta's, a band formed by the supposed grit and decay of their hometown Hamilton. Power pop with far more blues and rockabilly influences than your typical all female trio. Having formed after the lead singer Katie started playing the guitar during a lengthy school suspension (Tut, tut) they have played a series of underground gigs around their hometown that have caused a huge stir. And quite rightly so, on their newly released 73 Touche (that is also available FREE ) there are 2 pop gems showcasing just exactly what the Baretta's are currently all about. Comparisons vocally can [...]

Guitar? Check. Bass? Check. Drums? Attitude? Check. Hamilton punk garage trio The Barettas are offering their double A-side 7" for free. "Touche" b/w "Black Sheep" is a gutsy pair of lo-fi rock songs. Katie (vocals/guitar), Kate (bass) and Carly (drums) have a simple philosophy: There are no trust funds in Hamilton, so each of us has taken on a couple jobs, usually a combination of cleaning houses during the day, and tending bar at night. The reward, and real purpose for these jobs is that it lets us make music and blow off [...]

The Barettas are a trio from Hamilton, Ontario. We've never been, but their e-mail said it’s a city known for it’s industrial decay, grittiness, and blue-collar roots. Each member of the band has taken on a couple of jobs, usually a combination of cleaning houses during the day, and tending bar at night in order to reap the reward that it lets them make music and blow off steam at every other possible opportunity. Their first 7 inch Touche backed with Black Sheep sounds very much a product of their surroundings, [...]

The Barettas are offering their new single, Touche , free on Bandcamp. This trio from Canada's Steel City play pop with an edge: a little punk, a little psychobilly, and a lot of fun- like Luscious Jackson with an attitude. Check out: The Barrettas - Black Sheep - Watch: The Barrettas - Touche - Download: The Barettas - Touche (73) [ [...]

Wait, am I the first one to post about this band?? Just kidding, Jamie ! Also, I'm sure others have posted about The Barettas since they rock. The trio will make you wanna rip off your winter layers and dance all night. Their energy and youthfulness is contagiousness; they've certainly got a knack for crafting catchy pop tunes. It suits their home city of Hamilton, Ontario, at least according to the three girls: "It’s a city known for it’s industrial decay, grittiness, and blue-collar roots." Their music reflects this in only the best [...]

http://thebarettas.bandcamp.co m/ Canadian trio The Barettas got in touch to introduce the release of their debut 7" "Touche", it's a catchy power pop stomp with a bit of garage rock / punk spirit, driving rhythms and sing-along choruses, the vocal reminiscent of Gwen Stefani. Backed with "Black Sheep" another slice of infectious indie-pop. You can download the single for free via the groups BandCamp and order a phyiscal copy via this link . Listen: The girls also have an EP available on iTunes or on CD [...]

'Touche' By The Barettas. Today’s featured song comes from a pulsating, punchy, pretty, post punk, power pop, pulchritudinous posse (how’s that for alliteration!!) or The Barettas for short. Hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and definitely not to be confused with dire all girl rock band the Be r ettas from the UK, they have just released their first single ‘Touche’ as a free download. It’s implausibly catchy in a Gwen Stefani meets the Libertines wrestling The Donnas [...]

Dropping into our inbox out of the blue, the debut 73 single from Canadian band The Barettas is a thing of great, punky beauty. They tell us that their city of Hamilton, Ontario is known for its industrial decay, grittiness, and blue-collar roots, but what they don't tell us is how they got so good on only their first release. Get the single for free here .
