Arnaud Potier As It's been kind of funny to see the incredulity that has that has met the announcement of Phoenix as a top-billed act as the Summer's festival lineups are rolled out in the US and Europe, with people scoffing "since when are Phoenix festival headliners?". The answer, of course, being "since they began headlining festivals" - which is to say this year, following the massive success of 20092s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and in anticipation of the April 23 release of Bankrupt! . [...]

Some things are meant to the enjoyed with a little build, and so it goes with the full version of the track from the debut album of Montreal's "The Barr Brothers". While the radio cutdown is nice, its refreshing to have a bit of anticipation and some build stretched out on the front end for those looking for a bit of a surprise; great stuff. This comes from Secret City Records, a personal favorite amongst releases in the last couple years. WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | SOUNDCLOUD | [...]

Sometimes I regret showing up late to a show. This time, however, it wasn't because I missed the openers (and I'm sure the Barr Brothers rocked it) but because they were giving away these cool little ring lights at the door. They were kind of like little floating stars in the night sky when held up by the hundreds that were given them. Sometimes it's okay to conform to cheesy crap like this but only when it's pretty. I can't think of a better venue in the city for Patrick Watson to play than Massey Hall. [...]

The Barr Brothers There have been a couple of sibling projects on our playlists this year, most notably that of Montreal based four piece formed by Andrew and Brad Barr. Beginning their musical journey in the improv trio The Slip, it was upon meeting harpist Sarah Page and keys man Andres Vial that the four became The Barr Brothers. Their debut, self-titled, kickstarter style funded LP was released last year and ashamedly flew well under our radar. Indie folk at its finest, the album was recorded in a make-shift studio built from scratch in [...]
While The Slip will always be near and dear to a lot of our readers' hearts, we've really fallen hard for Andrew and Brad Barr's new Americana-infused project, aptly named The Barr Brothers . Back in May, the Montreal-based act were invited by the fantastic music blog I Am Fuel, You Are Friends to record an intimate live set for their ongoing Chapel Session series at the La Foret Adobe Chapel in Colorado Springs while the band was in town for the Meadowgrass Music Festival. The four song set, which was just posted [...]

The music of Montreal's The Barr Brothers unfolds slowly, richly, and often jaw-droppingly. When the idea arose for us to tape a special chapel session during the Meadowgrass Music Festival in the tiny old adobe church on the grounds of La Foret, nestled in the woods of Black Forest ( look! ), I wasn't very familiar with the band. Our sound guys were huge fans of the brothers' previous work with The Slip , and I just knew that they had a harp [...]

The Barr Brothers lug harp into the woods You know you're in for something special when a band brings a full sized harp and pump organ into the woods for an acoustic performance. For the session we recorded with them at Pickathon , The Barr Brothers decided not to compromise and hauled all their gear into the "Bunny Glade," one of the festival’s dedicated jam stations, to play live in the middle of the woods. Not only that, they performed a couple of songs that they had been rarely playing live: the instrumental [...]

♫ "Anything Could Happen" - Ellie Goulding "we fall into the rhythm..." ♫ "I Will Wait" - Mumford & Sons "shake the excess..." ♫ "Beggar In The Morning" - The Barr Brothers "i need you right here..." ♫ "Too Close (Nacey Remix)" - Alex Clare "i need to breathe..." "You Know Me" - Air Traffic Controller [...]
I've always loved the Calgary Folk Fest. You can't go wrong lying in the grass while taking in great music on Princes Island Park. It kinda makes you forget you're in the middle of the city. This year's folk fest brought alot of diverse acts, from Chris Isaak to Rural Alberta Advantage mixed, and even a side of hip-hop. Here’s a playlist of some of the bands I enjoyed the most. We're already looking forward to next year! 1. Original post: [...]

Part of the delay I had in reviewing this and the Bahamas album as they come next to each other on the page of Long List nominees was that I had a bit of a problem distinguishing one from the other when I played them. I guess after multiple listen to both I would say this album more of an overtly Americana (Canadiana??) feel musically and vocally it has more in the way of harmonies courtesy of group members and brothers, Brad and Andrew Barr and the occasional guest vocals. [...]

It was the start of the 32 Annual Ottawa Jazz Festival. Man it was a hot day for this festival to begin. Playing on the first day were: • Phil Dwyer a Canadian Songbook with Special Guest: Laila Biali • John Mayall • The Robert Cray Band • Jack Pine and The Fire [...]
Oz and I have nothing to write today, we're both busy at work and we both started jonesing for a drink right around 9:37. With that all in mind, here is something to fill the gap and to remind you to purchase The Barr Brothers excellent s/t debut. This was recorded during a soundcheck in Bourges, France @ Le Théâtre Jacques Coeur in April 2012. Tweet
Filed under: News , Awards , Music Appreciation Upper Class | A&C | Secret City The fight to determine the best Canadian album of 2012 based on artistic merit has officially begun. With most of the Canadian music industry setting their sights on Toronto's NXNE , organizers of the now seventh annual Polaris Music Prize instead announced its 40 Long List nominees today at the Waldorf Hotel in Vancouver, BC. And [...]

Frank Yang I'm sure that the timing was just coincidence, but if Friday night's Wavelength show at the Buddhist temple at 918 Bathurst featuring Bry Webb and Del Bel was meant as a last-minute bit of lobbying for my Polaris Prize ballot - long-list voting had opened that day - then I salute them. Well played. Though I've had a year to mull it over, there was very little actually locked down on my list of the top five Canadian "albums of the highest artistic integrity, without regard [...]

Photo credit: Sean Wehrli A string of bare lightbulbs coiled around the cluttered stage at (le) poisson rouge on Wednesday night. They were part of several devices artfully illuminated throughout The Barr Brothers ’ (@thebarrbrothers) set, enhancing the luster of this radiant band. The quartet opened by standing in shadows cast by golden footlights, strumming with an austerity that resembled an orchestra tuning up before melting into the glittering song “Old Mythologies”. The lights emphasized the ominous tones in their sound, [...]

Hey there! You should read this original post on the hill by going here: Polaris Possibilities:: Part 3 Polaris of Darkness As we get close to June, it means that I've got to start eliminating the pretenders from the contenders for the 2012 Polaris Prize . There are countless records that deserve to be on my ballot and won't get included, and like any subjective vote, there will be adoration showered on records I can't stand. So be it. I try to keep an active list of my "favorite records" but the [...]
