Yet another slow release week. Damn the Christmas season. The only release I'm actually excited about is Burial's . Last year's Untrue was a 2007 favorite. And Denison Witmer could be good. Really, though... what else is going to be worth listening to this week? I don't even know. An album from Kevin Costner ? That could be interesting. Who wants to take bets on how many songs I get through before I have to shut that one off? :: Adversary [...]

"Listen up motherfuckers, sit down and be quiet..." steht provokativ auf der Myspace-Seite von The Battle of Land and Sea geschrieben.

The Battle of Land and Sea .

The Battle Of Land And Sea - Saltwater Queen

portland, oregon's the battle of land and sea create lush, dreamy, whimsical folk songs that bring back past memories of mazzy star. together singer/songwriter sarah o'shura and guitarist joshua canny share in experiences from their past and relate them into the future. after forming in 2006 and placing a few songs on myspace, they were signed to nontenuf records and recently, released their self-titled debut with cover artwork by mel kadel. we are the beautiful ones we'll turn our backs to [...]

New Wax I've quite inadvertently established a blog with an affinity for alt.country/folk music (although if you pay close enough attention, there's a pretty varied soundscape represented here), and admittedly, I've a weak spot for sparsely arranged folk songs, no matter how vilified the burgeoning genre has become as of late. Granted, not everyone who can play a few rustic acoustic guitar chords or clumsily pluck a mandolin deserves to be praised, but running this blog has opened my eyes to a wealth [...]

File this under: Not just another beautiful voice with an acoustic guitar. Alt/folk is a complex genre: Suzanne Vega to Neko Case , Joni Mitchell to Cat Power , Natalie Merchant to Joanna Newsom --- and so much in between. To describe Portland based Sarah O'Shura [ The Battle of Land and Sea ] as just another folk singer would be a gross understatement and a huge mistake. Gorgeous and painful --- without being overly dramatic --- [...]

For my top 10 albums, I'm judging the albums as a whole, not just by a couple of songs that might be my favorites. I'm considering not just how good the artist was, in my humble opinion, but how well the album worked as a unit. That is where In Rainbows failed in my judgment, although musically I liked all of my top three albums nearly equally. In Rainbows seemed like a crazy quilt of songs not having much connection to each other and rather patched together, while both The Shepherd's Dog [...]

Speed of Dark favorites of the year must have been released so that readers can buy them. It doesn't matter whether it's a label-release or a self-release, but songs available only as free downloads or promotional MP3s can't qualify. I am not a professional music critic. I can't discourse on chord techniques or whether beats were dropped or misplaced. I read what others say, but I make up my own mind what I like. Sometimes my taste leads me to the same artists the pros like, and sometimes not. These are my choices [...]

It's a little bit early in the season for most North American readers to think about a beach vacation, but the pleasure of a seaside escape from the heat will come soon. Sample these five new artists' take on today's sea and beach theme. The Flies: Walking On the Sand British outfit the Flies created such a summer song here, and it has this great old 60's finger-snappin' sound. Think: David Lynch movie soundtrack. Lead singer Sean Cook was formerly with Spiritualized for eight years, [...]
