Bill Frisell used to time away at Big Sur to fashion a brilliant new addition to his on-going series of Americana jazz triumphs, and we look back at the Beach Boys when all three Wilson brothers were on tour. Nektar, those overlooked prog pioneers, is back with its initial album of original songs in some five years, providing a capstone [...]
For all of its well-deserved accolades, the Beach Boys' 2012 reunion was missing two irretrievable elements. This remastering of a 1976 performance at Anaheim Stadium makes clear just how important the late Carl and Dennis Wilson were. Carl, more than any other member of the band, seemed to embody the lost innocence of brother Brian Wilson's lost-soul symphonies. Without him, [...]

Like it or not, summer is coming, and there's little we can do about it. So instead of lamenting the heat from the confines of an air conditioned cavern, why not get out and enjoy the last few days we have left that are at least somewhat bearable? And if you, like me, are having a hard time getting into the summer spirit, I've tracked down some of my sun-soaked faves to get in the swing of things. There's an old family staple (Van Morrison), an indie mainstay (Pavement), and inarguably the best surf song of all time (Pet Sounds). [...]

"Made in California" isn't just any box set, it's the Beach Boys' 50th anniversary box set, which is why the band looks a bit sleepy in the photo above—they've been at it for a while. Nevertheless, the six CD set contains over seven and a half hours of music. That's the length of "Pet Sounds" played twelve and a half times back-to-back, so let that sink in for a second: it's a lot of music. With The Beach Boys, it couldn't really be any other way. By my count, 20122s "That's Why God Made the Radio" [...]

design by Dianna Walla / Paper Tiger It’s time again for Friday on My Mind , our weekly blog post where we look at videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News. Today we are fundraising for only 12 hours , thanks to our Amplifier Monthly Giving Club. Amplifiers have made it possible for me and all of the DJs to play more music during this past week, which usually would have been our Summer Donor Drive. As well during these 12 [...]

There's no mistaking Davy Jones for Robert DeNiro or Steven Tyler for Marlon Brando. But film history is littered with cameo appearances that prove you don't have to be Lawrence Olivier to steal a scene. From George Clinton crashing frat parties in PCU to stage diving with the Mighty Mighty Bosstones in Clueless , many memorable celluloid moments have been made by bands stepping out from behind their instruments and on to the silver screen. But what about those not-so-obvious cameos? With both Kanye West and Drake set to appear in [...]

"We persevered through the years," he tells Matt Weinberger in the attached video. "There have been ups and downs - periods of time when the Beach [...]

It was on this day, 47 years ago, that The Beach Boys released my favorite record of all time. I grew up on The Beach Boys, and was destined to be a fan, as the first mix-tape I ever received was a collection of Beach Boys songs given to me from my uncle. But even beyond my biased opinion, this record is considered to be one of the greatest ever, topping several all-time lists, and being included in the top 10 of countless others. So if you have never taken the time to listen to this album in its [...]
