![[Introducing] – Eureka Birds](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3410999_lg.jpg)
Tweet Slowcore is a genre which has had a shortage of flag-bearers over the years, especially post-2000. A genre that was basically constructed as anti-grunge was always going to struggle for appeal once grunge itself faded from the spotlight. It makes sense, but it's still a bummer. Luckily though, Baltimore band Eureka Birds are here with an EP that makes tentative steps towards achieving the brilliance of the oh-so-mellow sound of mid-90s slowcore pioneers like Low. "Eureka!" was recorded with Tyler Watkins of Margot [...]

Okay, okay! I give in! Since several of you (ahem, Ashley) have been asking for another iTunes mixery, here you go. It's true - I haven't done one in a while and I apologize. But there's so much great new music to keep up with, so forgive me. For those who don't know, this is iTunes Mixery part cuatro. Here’s how it goes: I play iTunes on shuffle -> tell you which song comes up -> provide the mp3 and a tidbit -> continue until five songs and embarrassment are complete. See my previous “mixeries” at the bottom [...]

Descartes a Kant The 2008 South By Southwest music and film conference is well under way this week in Austin, Texas, and there are quite a few exciting artists being showcased this year. In addition to well-known names like Spoon and R.E.M. , as well as bands that are currently receiving a large amount of hype, such as MGMT and Vampire Weekend , there are a slew of relatively unknown (and quite good) bands performing. On today's show we get to [...]

Image cred: Fol Chen's space . For beautiful reasons beyond my comprehension, yesterday was the day that a new band burst onto the internet like a unicorn magnificently leaping out of a birthday cake, and I was fortunate enough to be one of the first to know about it. I definitely got my slice of secret celebratory unicorn cake. Fol Chen is the heavily digital indie love child of Samuel Bing, Melissa Thorne, Julian Wass, & Rafter Roberts (with the occasional soft caress of Raymond Raposa of Castanets ), some of whom have already [...]
Valentine’s Day. Singles’ Awareness Day. Thursday. Whatever you call it, it’s upon us. What better excuse to pop in an eclectic, admittedly downtrodden mix, go for the mani-pedi double hitter, eat copious amounts of chocolate, and watch Annie Hall for the hundredth time? And with that, dear reader 1 , the mystery in our relationship is officially gone. Enjoy. 1. And apparently, judging by word choice, said mystery has been replaced with sheer pretension. mp3: " Power Of Love (Céline Dion) " by Final Fantasy mp3: [...]

Image: Kathy Osborn Stormy Weather - Bedroom Walls "Stormy Weather" was never one of my favorite Pixies songs, and it seems weird that anyone would feel so inspired by the original to want to cover it. Black Francis sang some of his least interesting (and most laconic) lyrics morose and humorless, emphasizing the grim inevitability of discord, the it is time -ness of It is time for stormy weather [...]

The National Plays the El Rey Tonight I finally made it out to see Qui with newest member David Yow. They were a powerful two piece before. By adding Yow, they've got more of a focal point for the crowd's attention. He pretty much sings/speaks nonsense into the microphone and if you're a politically correct and easily offended, it's best not to listen too hard. He works the stage so hard you can't take (read: are afraid to) take your eyes off of him. At any point he's equally likely to leap into the crowd, slam [...]

Bedroom Walls has posted that they have "about 14 songs at various stages of completion." If only the walls at Singing Serpent studios could talk! Their last album All Good Dreamers Pass This Way was released over a year ago by Baria Records. My hope is that they follow suit with their amazing song "Kathy in Her Bedroom" because it is superb! They've got some dark content, but it's fantastic music. You'll hear strings incorporated into some of their music that will blow you away. If only it would last longer, [...]

We always like to spotlight local bands on this blog, and a feature on Highland Park-based Bedroom Walls is long overdue. I found out about this band just after I finalized my list of Favorite Songs of 2006 and would have liked to include on that list "Somewhere in Newhall", a song from their 2006 release All Good Dreamers Pass This Way . Bedroom Walls consists of Donna Coppola, Adam Goldman, and Melissa Thorne, and their sound is soft and ethereal, almost shoegaze, with just a bit of an edge. There [...]

Monday musing. Ever had that question, what would people in the future listen to? Or related to that question, what would be the logical sound if people thirty years ago were asked to imagined what music in 2006 would sound like. Well, here is a little amusing Monday list. 2006 indie with 70's flavor. Thanks to random search at bubblegum machine and SXSW 2007. I would say this very much sounds like a sountrack of a retro TV show. Huge throaty woman singer or whispery male voice, bluesy and heavily influenced by jazz with more muted rock. [...]

We wish all of our friends good luck, drive/fly safely, and rock them good down'ther. For our industry friends, enjoy the paid vacation and for those who didn't get in this year, we still love you.LOS ANGELES BANDS SHOWCASING AT SXSW 2007:A Fine Frenzy Anavan Antimc Steve Aoki
A family, friends, a lover, all the breathing creatures don’t believe what you’ve done. Don’t believe what you’ve said. You’re just a little man inside a little room without shine only air passes by trough your nose but you don’t get breathing. You won’t to close your eyes. You just wonder the trouble that you feel and trouble comes repeatedly. Do you choose to die? Please think twice. A nice life is too short to feel and so difficult to begin again. A man’s standing near door gazing at thoughtfully wondering how life is so cruel to be walked on. [...]
Natürlich: (more...) mp3 , musique [...]
Before all of the students blow out of UVM for their winter break, I wanted to post the responses we got from the DJs at WRUV. For those in the Burlington area, you can get WRUV at 90.1. However, if you are reading this blog and live in Burlington, I'm guessing you already know that and probably even have it programed into your car radio. For everyone outside the Burlington area, you can stream WRUV online. They also archive shows from the prior week and make them available as mp3 files on the WRUV [...]
