The Beets love The Ramones and they play awkward sing-alongs about being in love and staying inside. The Beets released their third LP in 2011 via Hardly Art and it was called Let The Poison Out . Perhaps a little falsely thrown in with the garage rock uprising, The Beets are a contrast to most things you are likely to see in garage rock. It's been about two years since the cleaner Let The Poison Out hit and it feels like we're about due for another LP here pretty soon. The band will be [...]

The Beets return to action. After a little break, The Beets are getting back on the road, supporting their 2011 album, Let The Poison Out. Also, the band have released a new video...

It's been a while since I've actively kept up with the blogosphere, and I have even let some of the bands that I always keep up with leave my keen sightline, and The Beets were unfortunately one. I recently wondered where they were and what they were up to. Turns out, they're just playing some live shows hopefully leading up to a new record (complete speculation based on Facebook 'research') but to tide us all over we have the spectacular 73 from Juan Wauters (leader of The Beets) aptly entitled ' Sanity ' because it's [...]

Juan Wauters // “Sanity” Here’s a new track called “Sanity” from Juan Wauters , who also happens to be the “leader of The Beets .” I can confidently say that The Beets have consistently been one of my favorite bands over the last few years so the idea of hearing some solo stuff from Juan was enticing to say the least. The track finds Juan is some pretty familiar material (even down to the guitar strum patterns) albeit with a renewed sense of production. The Beets [...]

Queens based Juan Wauters - frontman of The Beets - is about to release his first solo album. Faithful to his signature lo-fi garage-pop sound, in the preview single ("Sanity," streaming below) the guitarist/vocalist from Queens offers a more acoustic and direct approach, but not necessarily less fuzzy. Wauters will release 500 copies of this record on March 12th, and play a few shows in the local NYC area, including the Mercucy Lounge on March 3rd and The Bowery Ballroom on March 8th. However The Beets will be back in full swing later in the [...]

As part of his always-welcome Ash Wednesday series, the increasingly jazz-influenced Asher Roth releases the above video today for "Turnip The Beet". Perhaps playing with the current hip hop term-of-the-year "Turn Up!" with the undervalued vegetable, Asher's never the one to pass up an opportunity for a good joke. Video above / download below. Man, what a wild week. And I'm not talking about the wild you indie folk are used to, likely boozing it up and partying every night. I'm talking about the working life, the stress of the job, the busy days and exhaustion-laden nights. Going to bed at 9:30; I feel old. So on Fridays, I look forward to cutting loose. I needed something epic this week. Something loud, raucous, and rambunctious. And I found it in this playlist. At the studio, 10 pm, the lights are dim [...]

After a week away, it was nice to be back in the studio. This week I played several folk-related tunes, a few garage-based ones, and a small handful of indie pop tracks. With the amount of indie-folk I've played of late, I'm thinking we're in store for another dreamy mix and maybe even a garage rock mix in the near future. Andi and I have been on a DIY kick of late and a recent project has been homemade laundry detergent. With the three ingredients displayed in the photo above, along [...]

THE BEETS | LET THE POISON OUT HARDLY ART The Beets have been around for four years and their newest album, Let the Poison Out , is their first on the Hardly Art label. These Ramones wannabes aren’t so much imitators as they are devotees to garage punk, and it sounds like they have hit their stride with their latest drummer, Chie Mori. While they still indulge in infectious sing-alongs and simple melodies, [...]

100. Daniel Maloso - "Hijos de José" Monterrey DJ and self-proclaimed disco caveman Daniel Maloso stands on the ephemeral viaduct between a disco performer and a disco auteur. It’s this stance of Maloso as a sort of middleman that makes him such an interesting (if circumstantial) character in dance music. Because, really, with all the artists moving away from the all-comprehensive and universal magnetism of the genre, when Daniel Maloso sighs that “we are all sons of José,” we’re back to family business all over again. - Reyes [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Three years ago, back in 2008, The Beets began their garage-y, sporadic, and minimalist percussion rock up in New York. After a few years of scraping under the radar and keeping to punk scene of up north, The Beets have made their way into the eye of those previously unfamiliar with their lo-fi stylings. Although still lo-fi in nature, this band has come a long way from their original sound, which was muddied to the extent that it consumed the entirety [...]
