This video has a bunch of bear-looking dudes in it, but it's still awesome. why? Because the song is fucking awesome. JAMAICA - Short and Entertaining
After a slow week or so (besides Siren and the Gospels show last night), the end of July in NYC is gonna be nothing short of awesome. Too many good shows. Highlights are hard to come by since almost of these look like outstanding shows, but I'll pick the best of the best. I'm super excited to see the guys from Sirs play in none-other-than Shea Stadium on Thursday (7/22), where not too long ago lots of Ridgewood kids just played/watched the fantastic Chocolate Bobka showcase. On Friday there's the Free Energy/Best Coast/Loose Limbs FREE show at South Street Seaport [...]
Indie pop outfits Dry Feet, The Beets and North Highlands are each individually touted as bands on the rise and acts to watch, so getting them all together under one, er, roof (on a boat) is a sure bet for a great time. And that's what's happening this coming Monday evening in New York City, [...]

The Beets are always a good time. There's a few you're guaranteed any time the Beets come back to town. Truly delightful jangly songs. A high-energy performance. A whole bunch of their friends who are going to come and be a little drunk and make sure that everyone's having fun. I've never been to a Beets show with bad vibes, and would expect this to be no different. German Measles are also playing. German Measles are an objectively bad band. Their songs sound like songs you would write if I handed you a guitar for the first time right now [...]
So I didn't make out to any shows the first 10 days of July (including missing Real Estate TWICE and Beach Fossils yet again), and I'm looking to changing that. I've already missed The Roots and Talib Kweli show I was planning on going to, so I'm off to a bad start. Probably the show I want to go to the most over these next 10 days is the Small Black and Beach Fossils show (7/14), which is 21+ so I'm gonna let out a huge FUUUUCK to that shit. (Maybe one of those bands wants to guest list me??? [...]

I'm a big Alex Bleeker and The Freaks fan. They played my number one favorite set of SXSW this past year. Of course their sound is more complicated than this, but their Band-era vibe makes me so, so happy. They obviously can't sound quite like The Band, or have the same ethos- that moment in time was so very specific- but they're not playing punk and they're not playing indie rock and they live in that wonderful older-old space that I recently blogged about. It's so late and I'm babbling, but I promise Monster Island basement will be [...]

Just over a month ago I posted a new track by Dead Gaze , and a review of his album End of Days, Why Not You? (check out that post here ) and at that point he didn't have any shows booked, but tomorrow night brings this Mississippi psych rocker to Brooklyn for a Group Tightener showcase at Monster Island Basement. Dead Gaze have a way of making heavy psychedelic with the song writing sensibility of a pop band. At the beginning of "Remember What [...]

This show should feel like coming home. I haven't done a Recommended show post in several days, but that's because I didn't really feel like there was anything worth your time. My Sunday at Northside led me from one disappointing musical moment to another (so many bad bands!), that I fell into a bit of a musical depression (I don't think I'll even post the photos I took of the bands- I'd want to be way, way too mean). There's nothing like a Brooklyn lovin' night of Beach Fossils and The Beets to pull you out of any funk, though. [...]

I couldn't choose one show to recommend for Friday. You couldn't possibly only go to one show tomorrow night. Northside has packed Williamsburg with an absurd amount of good bands this Friday, and I'm going to give you a run down of all the ones I think are worth dropping by. First and foremost, Famous Class records are hosting their own show at Death By Audio, with the abovementioned bands. Grooms, Darlings, and Sisters are three of my absolute favorites all in one place, so this show gets my first nod. Happening a little further out, at Bar [...]

Somewhere between '60s Frat Rock and '60s proto-punk, The Beets made one of my favorite albums of 2009, their debut Spit In The Face Of People Who Don't Want To Be Cool . Since then, the band have gone through some line-up changes. Drummer Jacob Warstler has departed and Melissa Scaduto has taken over. There is also a fourth Beet now, hiding in the bushes in the picture above, and his role in the band is rumored to be a woodwind instrument. Look for the Beets new album, Stay Home [...]

I must not have been paying very close attention in US History class (maybe I was concentrating too hard on drawing checkerboards on my Chuck Taylors with a Sharpie) because I swear I had never even heard of the Goodnight Loving Trail until I was googling the band Goodnight Loving from Milwaukee. Apparently, these cute boys that play twangy pop that gets me crazy named their band after an old cattle trail that was started by Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving in 1866... p...
