It's Valentines Day. Love it or hate it, you can't deny it. I will, of course, effortlessly be showing Mrs M just what a lucky catch I was. And for the rest of you, by way of a massively contrived link, let us cover you with love too. Here is a tasty little mix of covers we've picked up to follow on from yesterday's Bad Moon Rising post , just don't expect them to be all loved-up now will you. First up is a sublime cover of Neil Young's classic Hey Hey [...]
<!-- --> Click here for download Song: Shearwater - You As You Are [download here ] What's so good? Jonathan Meiburg undoubtedly has one of the most recognizable voices in folk rock today. That is, of course, if you've heard Shearwater. If you haven't, you're missing out...but fear not! They're on the brink of releasing a new album [...]
I mean, we all knew this day would come. It's just such a shock that it happened so fast (no, it's not, but I need to keep up appearances). ABC, the network that somehow green lit The Worst Show In Television History, has canceled that very same show, just two episodes into its historic first [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Reynard Li Ohbijou have looked to their hometown of Toronto for inspiration since their 2006 debut, but it was time to become a little more worldly for 'Metal Meets.' "It's something we've never explored before, that desire to expedite my cultural background," singer Casey Mecija, a first-generation Canadian of Filipino decent, tells Spinner. This new outlook was [...]

Frank Yang They don't call it Rocktober for nothing. Only March, with its legions of bands crossing the continent en route to SXSW offers nearly as many live music options as October and with such a plethora of shows to choose from, conflicts are inevitable. October 11, in particular, offers a tough choice for Toronto concert-goers: on one hand, you've got Sleater-Kinney/Helium/Minders supergroup Wild Flag making their Toronto debut at Lee's Palace on the back of their excellent self-titled debut , and on the other you've got hometown hardcore heroes Fucked [...]
This year has been replete with various iterations of indie film scores: to name two, Daft Punk's Tron: Legacy (no, not the new Daft Punk album) and Minneapolis band Dark Dark Dark's lush orchestration to the 1928 silent thriller Spies . The newest installation comes from Canadian atmospheric rockers The Besnard Lakes , whose new EP, You Lived in the City, is actually the soundtrack for the interactive online documentary Welcome to Pine Point . Undeniably reminiscent of Twin Peaks , footage from an abandoned mining town's heyday is supposed to foreground [...]
It would have been nice (considering the seriousness with which I took this morning's half-marathon) if I had the opportunity to run 13.1 miles on good rest. Alas, this was not the case. I received only 3 hours of sleep last night, and when my alarm sounded at 6am I was finally starting to drift [...]

Your midweek options: ► Athens' purveyors of Southern Gothic twang Futurebirds (pictured) headline the Satellite on a buzzy night that also features Van Pierszalowski's post-Port O'Brien project Waters and Portland chamber-pop sextet Loch Lomond . ► The Quebec in Hollywood festivities at the El Rey Theatre offer four bands seemingly only connected by geography — Patrick Watson , the Besnard Lakes , Malajube and the Barr Brothers [see Tuesday's post ]. ► Twin Shadow plays the first of [...]

So the Barr Brothers' story goes that guitarist Brad Barr heard a neighbor, Sarah Page, practicing her harp, learned the melody, knocked on her door and played it for her. Which makes for a nice warm-and-fuzzy — not unlike the Montreal quartet's self-titled debut album (out next week on Secret City Records ). It's bluesy, tool-shed Americana that fools with arrangements and polyrhythms, recalling in parts the Avett Brothers and the Head and the Heart, though both with some darker edges. ||| Download: "Beggar in the Morning" [...]

Filter Tokyo Police Club are not a band you'd expect to announce an ambitious covers project. Not to say that they haven't reinterpreted someone else's song before - I've not heard it but I'm sure it's happened - but they haven't really made doing so "their thing", so to speak. Well not until now. Last month, they announced their intention to record and release ten covers over ten days, one from each of the last ten years, and document the process via Polaroids and Polaroid.com . [...]

In fact, any time I post here, you can pretty much guarantee I've done a thorough 1146 search to make sure whichever band I'm featuring on any given week hasn't already been featured and since risen to glory. Bands that excite me are hard to come by these days for whatever reason, so being a contributor to this blog now makes that bleak fact less so. Now you know [...]
Editor's note: This commentary by Martin is the first in a series by the writers of TGTF in response to the horrific and heartwrenching loss of thousands upon thousands of physical pieces of music by fire in the London riots earlier this week. This article by the Guardian provides a comprehensive list of the independent record labels affected by the SONYDADC warehouse fire, as well as current releases that already have known physical stocking problems including Arctic Monkeys ' new 73 single 'The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala' (from the band's recent album release, Suck It and See' [...]

It's been some time since I've posted on this blog and I am happy that topomodesto gave me the opportunity to put together a mix. In the face of algorithm driven mix generation I hope that there continues to be interest in crafting diverse listening experiences. What may start as a matter of convenience easily translates into common practice. Collecting and orchestrating music samples into coherent ideas may be perfected by professional dj's, but I find my interests don't take root until I search out the connections between songs and artists myself. And this invariably leads [...]
In those last few hours before I knew I was leaving San Francisco, my thoughts vacillated. After breakfast at Dottie's I got in my car and drove to Haight/Ashbury and wandered around for a while, trying to figure out what the next step was for me. I stalled for as long as possible, hoping to [...]

The Besnard Lakes promised a new set of tour dates last week, and yesterday they delivered the good news. Not only is the epic space-rock quartet heading out on the road with Malajube, they've announced a new four-song EP entitled You Lived in the City . The 12" vinyl EP will be available on tour and at Jagjaguwar starting September 12th and includes a cover of "We're Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time)" by Canadian rock band Trooper. The [...]

Jessica Eaton Though they should be - and probably are - at work on their next album, a follow-up to last year's The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night , Montreal's Besnard Lakes have put together a little something something that will not only slake their fans' appetite for some new outer space-scale rock, but give them an excuse to get out of the studio and back on the road for a spell. On September 20, they'll release You Lived In the City , a new 123 EP that [...]
