David Waldman The tale of Toronto's Diamond Rings was one of the unexpected little Toronto triumphs of the Summer, what with the electro-glam alter-ego of D'Urbervilles frontman Jon O'Regan releasing a fun video to go with his debut 73 single, "All Yr Songs", and having it quickly get not only catch the ear of Pitchfork founder Ryan Schreiber, but also garner title of "Best New Music" by the same tastemaking site, leading to plenty of attention, singles sales and plum opening slots. The happy tale took an unfortunate [...]

Do you remember the 2007 release, The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse ? I was revisiting the album over the weekend as I'm pouring through my favorite albums of the decade. This one, as it was during it's release, seems to be overlooked by many list makers. The Besnard Lakes today announced they will release The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night on March 9th via Jagjaguwar. . It's being described as "a majestic, sprawling vision of guitar bombast and [...]
While the band never gained the attention some of the other bands from their city did, they represented the scene well with The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse .

I've got one more song for everyone tonight from the husband and wife duo Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, and their indie-rock/shoegazing project The Besnard Lakes . Now consisting of 6 members, The Besnard Lakes have released 2 full-length albums to date. For Agent 13 can be found on the band's most recent album, the 2007 Polaris nominated The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse . In September of this year, the band's label ( Jagjaguwar ) announced that not only will the band be scoring Mark Ruffalo 's upcoming film "Sympathy [...]

Mew Beach The vocals and even some of the guitar work are immediately reminiscent of Built to Spill, but nope, this is Mew , a prog-tinged band from Copenhagen, Denmark that flew under my radar until I, by chance, accidentally downloaded it. Now I'm sure that Olga and Jace of the Besnard Lakes either love or loathe this band and have already done the requisite apostle/apostate work on 'em, but sadly, my musical knowledge can be [...]

The Besnard Lakes rolled into the Mercury Lounge on a warm October night and seemed like they were on a mission. Down to a four piece band, with the addition of two laptops (a subject of a few jokes Jace Lasek made - "excuse me while I check my emails," etc.) they stormed through an epic, swirling, and utterly captivating set. Two guitars, a huge array of effect pedals, bass, flute, and the aforementioned computers on stage created a dizzyingly layered bed of sound for the back-and-forth vocals of the husband and wife team Jace Lasek and [...]
Those of us who turned out to see The Besnard Lakes last night at TT the Bear’s Place in Boston got some cool surprises: the debut of some new material, plus a few tantalizing details about the long-awaited follow-up to their 2007 stunner The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse . Featuring a stripped-down four-person lineup—and, sadly, minus their usual smoke machine—the Besnards seemed a little tentative at first, with bassist/vocalist Olga Goreas confessing: “We haven’t done this in a while.” Even so, it didn’t take long for the band to showcase gorgeous blended vocals, shoegazing guitars, [...]

As the story goes, Mark Ruffalo, that dude from Collateral and Zodiac , was listening to music one night. He eventually slipped into what is described as "a flu-induced fever dream." During this dream, the sounds of The Besnard Lakes' song "Because Tonight" filled his headphones and gave him a "welcomed chill." Says Ruffalo, "It was a perfect piece of music. It has longing and hope and melancholy; a love story gone well and then badly and then lived out...I could see whole films in their songs." Once he woke up, the actor [...]

The Besnard Lakes have been tapped to score music for Sympathy For Delicious , the directorial debut from Mark Ruffalo. Ruffalo is the actor who has appeared in such films as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and 13 Going on 30 --now that's range--and he states, "The Besnard Lakes is a perfect match to what we have been trying to achieve with the movie; something rough and not overproduced, not devoid of guts, full of humanity and messy around the edges. Their music is not just a clutch of songs but a cinematic experience that [...]

The Besnard Lakes seem to have taken everyone by surprise; their music blends drone-y shoegaze and prog-rock with the playfulness of lightly orchestrated indie-pop. These elements make Are The Dark Horse one of the best comprehensive albums of 2007. Songs like “Because Tonight” are instantly classic in nature—The Besnard Lakes’ ability to dictate between sophisticated and precise string arrangements, and drone-heavy prog-rock give them an edge in a somewhat polluted independent music scene. The combination of orchestration with structured proggy drones is nothing new, but The Besnard Lakes [...]
Haven't listened to Pinback in a while. Love how this track builds to such a sweet release. There's a couple other throwback tunes that've popped onto the player by fate. And some new ones, too. Enjoy. Pinback “AFK” from Summer In Abaddon The Besnard Lakes “Cedric’s War” from The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse Trailer Trash Tracys “Candy Girl” from demo Land Of Talk “Death By Fire” (Live) from [...]

Derby's a strange scene in Louisville. There are limos driving all up and down Bardstown Road. It's totally strange and possibly stupid. Guess it's good for the local economy. One of my best friends is in town taking photos of Paris Hilton's party at the toolbox known as Fourth Street Live. No photos are allowed of her, though - which is kind of an odd thought considering her entire existence is contingent on hangin' out and dudes being stoked on that. One of my coworkers told me that there's a pretty swank Derby gala right up the street from Bloggins [...]
Devastation - The Besnard Lakes And You Lied To Me - The Besnard Lakes The other night, I went to a rock show. A rock show in an art museum, to be precise. The Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (or MACM for short, if the title didn't already give that away) is an interesting place to see a concert. We lined up in the circular lobby for over an hour. The line spiraled around the outside of the room until its front and tail began to merge. Proper preparations [...]
