Slothbear Cantor On Album Review ALBUM REVIEW: A Slothbear is what do you get when you mix some mammals and paint in Staten Island which forms the release they call Cantor On . Some may write this part of New York off as just a breeding ground for lap dance vixens but we won't be so narrow minded. We thought we heard something deeper when we featured them in our Crop-O-Singles over the summer and here we are proven right. They do have more moves than a Go-Go dancer! This [...]

Photo by John Vettese In less than a week, it will officially be summer. Longer days and warmer nights—except for those that are unseasonably cold (thanks, jet stream, you temperamental weather pattern). A time for relaxation and reflection. A time to once again look back over the archive of studio sessions I've recorded with the uber-talented musicians and songwriters of the Philadelphia region, as we look ahead to the next milestones in our journey: the XPoNential Music Festival and the first birthday of The Key. Revisitation is a fun task; we've done a lot [...]

Courtesy of the band As Talking Heads co-founders, husband-and-wife rockers Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth certainly have had their influence on music since that band's debut album ( Talking Heads: 77 ) was released in 1977. When they decided to pursue a side project as the Tom Tom Club , their 1981 self-titled debut became a post-disco new wave phenomenon anchored by songs like "Wordy Rappinghood." Ask many a music fan the question: "What you gonna do when you get out of jail?" and their likely response will be "I'm gonna have some fun," a [...]

Photo by Michael E. Anderson On Monday, June 6, combine a night out at Citizens Bank Park with Philly's other favorite pastime—music. The Baseball Project , a side project of R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, will be singing "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" before the opening pitch at the Phillies vs. Dodgers game. (For this tour, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills will be "pinch-hitting" for Peter Buck as he recovers from some injuries, according to the band's website.) Rather not swelter in the bleachers at Citizen's Bank? Right after the first [...]

2001 was a huge breakout year for The Bigger Lovers , whose debut album How I Learned to Stop Worrying landed on several key Top 15 Lists at the end of the year. But four years and two albums later the band packed it in and decided to go about their separate ways. But its members never strayed far from the music path, and even rocked out with other bands such as BC Camplight , Audible , Missing Palmer West , and The Pernice Brothers . But in honor of the 10 year [...]

A good week is in store for power pop's true believers in Philly. Mainstays of the scene circa 2001, The Bigger Lovers reconvened to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their full length debut, How I Learned to Stop Worrying . Here on The Key, Bruce Warren chatted with drummer Patrick Berkery about the milestone (as well as the band's plans surrounding it), while M.J. Fine put the reunion in a historical context in last week's City Paper . The Worrying vinyl reissue is available this week, the [...]

The Bigger Lovers Little Giant Maxi Single MUSIC REVIEW: It's been 7 Years since The Bigger Lovers haunted a stage and about 10 years since their debut How I Learned to Stop Worrying came out. In celebration you can order a 500 limited edition pressing of this 2001 release. I think we need to check the math but regardless here's a fresh Little Giant Maxi Single from them. Their follow-up Honey in the Hive also delivered succinct pop songs any girl would fall [...]

Very excited to hear the new "Little Giant" EP from the Philadelphia band "The Bigger Lovers" . From 2000 through 2004 the Bigger Lovers released three classic Power Pop albums "How I Learned to Stop Worrying.." , "Honey in the Hive" and "This Affair Never Happened" . All are in print and are very much worth your time - if you haven't heard them. The band produced a potent mix of alternative rock that demonstrated echos of 80s/90s bands like the DBs and Let's Active. Listen again and you could also [...]
Philly power-pop faves the Bigger Lovers have reunited after half a decade apart to celebrate the the 10th anniversary of their classic debut album, How I Learned To Stop Worrying. (Read more about the LP here.) The band is also reissuing How I Learned To Stop Worrying digitally and on vinyl via its Miles Above [...]
Ye olde series of tubes is serving up quite a bit of great new (and old) music at the moment, so I thought I'd round some up: MEAN CREEK : The local flannel rockers have their terrific new Hemophiliac EP up at the low, low price of whatever you wanna pay. This is especially nice of them, since they had to back off their plans to record a full-length when they found themselves without any financial support for the recording. It is entirely self-funded and recorded in NY with John Agnello, who has produced [...]

This week, The Bigger Lovers dropped some news and new music here . Prior to the band celebrating the 10th anniversary of its debut album, How I Learned To Stop Worrying , with a new EP and a show at Johnny Brenda's (on March 12th), The Key spoke with drummer Patrick Berkery via e-mail. Since the band originally called it quits, Berkery has been an in-demand session and touring drummer. One of my favorite projects from last year that Berkery cooked up [...]

Today on twitter we were stopped short in our rock and roll tweet tracks when we noticed that Philly's The Bigger Lovers started a twitter account @TheBiggerLovers on January 10th. Wait. We thought the band broke up a few years ago. This morning, the band tweeted the following: So....until tomorrow.
I didn't listen to a lot of music this past weekend. Most of the time I was sitting in my apartment watching Top Chef marathons, What Not To Wear (my roommate has given me this wonderful addiction) or countless cheesy movies while sniffling and coughing away. I was on a good amount of medication. If I sat in my room and just listened to music, I probably would have passed out. However, I am back and breathing fairly normally again, and it feels nice to be out in public. The only time I [...]
