In trio form, the sweet-voiced ladies of The Living Sisters - LA-based songstresses Eleni Mandell , Inara George of The Bird and the Bee, and Lavender Diamond frontwoman Becky Stark - come off as something akin to a modern version of The Roches, with the production and harmony dynamics of a particularly delicate, indie-fied country girl group. In case you're new here, from our perspective, this combination is a very good thing indeed. Love to Live , the upcoming debut from the new femmepop [...]
With their self-titled debut album three years ago, singer/songwriter Inara George and multi-instrumentalist/producer Greg Kurstin -- aka The Bird and the Bee -- forged a tantalizing hybrid of fizzy electronica and smart, tongue-in-cheek art-pop. The sound was sleek, the attitude playful, the songs rich with lyrical wit and hummable hooks. But is this in the neverland of "too pop for the indie intelligentsia" and "too eclectic for the masses"? We certainly hope not -- and the beguiling new project Guiltless Pleasures Volume 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates , arriving March 23 via Blue [...]
Hall and Oates are about to be cool again. Los Angeles indie pop duo The Bird and the Bee will soon be releasing a tribute album entitled Guiltless Pleasures Volume 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates , and no, the band will not be doing so ironically. Multi-instrumentalist and producer Greg Kurstin, who lost out to Brendan O'Brien for the Producer of the Year Grammy last night, has made that clear. Said Kurstin in a press conference last week: "There's definitely no irony. They're great songwriters and these are great songs." [...]

Frank Yang Something of a cold snap hit Toronto yesterday, so I was fortunate to have an invite to what was promised to be a hot and sweaty dance party at the Smiling Buddha bar, soundtracked by Woodhands showcasing their just-released second album Remorsecapade . Granted, it'd have probably been just as warm if I'd just stayed home, but experience has taught me that the odds of dance parties breaking out in my living room tend to be close to nil. I think there's a temptation to not [...]

What could be better than THIS you ask? How about a tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates? Inara George and Greg Kurstin, the duo know as The Bird and the Bee, are readying the release of Guiltless Pleasures Vol. 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates. The record will hit digitally and physically on March 23 via Blue Note records. Being the well endowed bloggers that we are, the record has been ours for a week or so, this allowing for ultimate saturation. The verdict? A [...]

it looks like a pretty beautiful piece of equipment, huh? in no more than two months, ads for apple's glorious new iPad will inevitably surface: what tunes will the marketing geniuses at apple carefully select for the campaign? what combination of indie appeal & sass, spunk & energy, radio potential & a catchy hook, will send an unknown act rocketing up the itunes charts? apple has made it happen for css, feist, the ting tings, matt costa, & yael naim among others: who's next? "Emily and I had the itch" says Dixie Chick Martie Maguire of her sister Emily Robinson and their upcoming May-released album under the name Court Yard Hounds . With remaining D-Chick Natalie Maines on hiatus, Maguire and Robinson decided to join forces for a new project. "Every time we'd call Natalie and say 'are you ready?' she wasn't ready," continues Robinson. "She wanted a clear-cut break." New album, as yet untitled, will feature a guest appearance from Jakob Dylan on the song "See You In the Spring". The music of Hall and Oates gets a makeover courtesy [...]
There's been a lot of talk about supergroups over the last year or so. Sadly, the ladies haven't really had a presence in these musical marriages. That all changes now with The Living Sisters, which is made up of members of Lavender Diamond and The Bird and the Bee . According to the L.A. Times blog , the band is made up of Lavender Diamond's lead singer Becky Stark, jazz-pop crooner Eleni Mandell, and Inara George from The Bird and the Bee. According to Mandell, the group's [...]

Happy New Year. First great music news of said new year? Soundgarden reunion is a go! How f'ing crazy is that? I guess Chris Cornell finally came to his senses. Maybe his shitty Timbaland produced R&B album, which bombed horribly, was the last straw or this is just a reunion tour cash grab. We shall see. I'm pretty pumped tough. I finally [...]

It's been a while since I've posted an update about anything here. To anyone who was ever looking forward to any posts, I'm sorry for the lack of attention to LiveJournal. I've been a little busy and haven't really gotten the time to write any reviews about most of the albums I've listened to this year. When Atlas Sound's Logos leaked, I began writing a review, but, unfortunately, I could not finish. The year is wrapping up, so, here are my top albums for the year. These are the albums that I liked, listened to, and spoke [...]
One of the best year we've had music wise in a long time. Lot's of new bands that blew my mindhole, veterans that came back on the scene and did the same. A few disappointments (I'm looking at you Mute Math and Dredg) and outright failures (Chris Cornell ... seriously dude?) some kick ass hip hop (Tanya Morgan, Blakroc, Dälek) [...]
We've seen an unprecedented year of new music in 2009. There's been enough diversity to satisfy practically anyone's music tastes. We definitely had a surge in surfer sound revivals, dreamy bedroom pop, lo-fi garage rock, and psychedelic electronica, but we also heard just about everything in between. It'll be interesting to see what trends emerge next year. Before we leave 2009 for good, we wanted to recap of our top rated album releases and close out the year with our top 100 songs. [...]
