Yes, I'll just come right out and say it: Hello my name is Heather. I am a blogger, and I am not at SXSW this week. If you are like me find yourself constrained by money, or work, or life (or a combination of the three) and are not partaking in the musical bacchanalia on the streets of Austin right now, let's find something to salve our wounds, shall we? The good people over at Austin Sound have put together a quality 21-song sampler [...]

AUSTIN, TX: home field advantage A Can't Miss Artist for this Year's SxSW Music Festival The Black and White Years release an amazing album HOT NEW RELEASE: Austin's Black and White Years play the role of hometown hero this week, taking the stage at South-by-Southwest Music Festival. It's a time of triumph - the [...]
(as featured on This Week's Finds , Mar. 2-8) "Power to Change" - the Black & White Years Perhaps there has always been a fine line in music between the idiosyncratic and the gimmicky, but I'm guessing never more so than here in the 21st century--an age in which worldwide musical genres are a mouse-click away, and a multi-million-dollar recording studio is no longer required to manipulate sound. And so, these days, bands can rather too easily seem the contrived result of combining, oh, say, South African music [...]

It's no surprise that the Black and White Years have served up a stellar debut with their first proper album. We've been expecting it since first crossing their path early last year, and the announcement last spring that the trio would be recording the album with Jerry Harrison, esteemed producer and former Talking Heads guitarist, only upped the ante. Thankfully, The Black and White Years delivers, and without changing the sound that has made them one of our favorites here on Austin Sound - even if that cover artwork is a bit suspect. The touch [...]

I saw local band The Black And White Years last month at the Beauty Bar . The place was packed and the band didn't disappoint. I bought the EP, Real! In Color!, after the show and jammed out on the car ride home. Their full-length debut cd was produced by Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads, and will officially be out on February 12th. They have a cd release party planned at Stubbs later this month (Feb. 22) with Ume opening up the show. It's an indoor show and tickets are here [...]

DATELINE: Austin, Texas + Cannes, France Right here and now I will make a bold prediction. By the end of 2008, Austin's BLACK and WHITE YEARS will have one of the best records of the year. The band was a relative unknown in their own hometown when it was invited to attend 2007's SxSW Music Music Festival . By the time the festival was over, they had gained a slew of loyal, eager fans who had very little of the band's recorded material to share with friends. [...]
I must admit that I don't know much about The Black and White Years . They're one of those bands from Austin that somehow found their way onto my Myspace friend list. They have new song, Steady As It Goes , which they recorded at home. It sounds promising. Lyrics: steady as it goes. be you like an obelisk. have no fear of politics. your [...]

Three fellas from Texas addicted to porn and throwing mustache parties, embracing the golden glow of a cowboy sunset whilst having a post- what-they-do-best smoke, is as cool as the fact that their debut album will be produced by Talking Head Jerry Harrison. Don't you agree? The last four years have seen The Black and White Years settle with a name that just might bring them into the light a bit more. Previously known as The Trees, Paper Tiger, The Leavers and others [...]
