I was asked the other day, "Why haven't you talked about The Black Angels in a while?" To which I replied, "Damn good point." Let's talk about The Black Angels. If you're from the Cleveland area, chances are you remember the night of November 18th. Earlier that day the Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the University of Michigan in a thriller, and Ohioans across the state had dreams of a national championship dancing in their heads. It's also memorable for the sold-out homecoming show on The Black Keys fall tour with The Black [...]
Silversun Pickups Carnavas released July 26, 2006 free mp3 of 'Lazy Eye' If the idea of basement tapes made by Billy Corgan and Doug Martsch appeals to you, say hello to your new favorite band. Silversun Pickups are fairly early adopters of the 1990s revival, but they're not grunge dorks or anything, and they're from L.A. [...]
A few things to mention. First off: Tonight at The Granada, The Black Angels want to rock you gently. The show's being sponsored by our friends The Fine Line , benefiting The Family Gateway Center . Tickets are still available, and are only 10 bucks for general admission. I'll be there, so you should come and take in a great show with us. Mp3 after the jump. (more...)

This coming Tuesday, once again, is the first big release day of the year, and to get a further jump on the action, here's a couple albums seeing release in the states for the first time next week, and both already in Rhapsody. Fujiya & Miyagi 's Transparent Things has been in Rhapsody for some time, but the album's been flying under the radar for the most part. F&M are a British duo from Brighton and disciples of Krautrockers Can and [...]
*New and Improved: Favorite of '06 I've decided to repost my 'Favorite Albums of '06 '...but this time with Mp3's. As before, keep in mind this is labeled 'My Favorite' avoiding any sort of argument in regards to the the placement and 'quality' of each album. Without further ado: My 25 Favorite Albums of 2006 25) John Mayer - Continuum This album was to good to leave out but admitedly too mainstream/college dorm room too honor it for it's true worth John Mayer - [...]

One week ago today, Seattle radio station KEXP wrapped up their year with t heir annual Top 90.3 of the year (as voted by the listeners,) running from 8AM all the way to 4:30PM. This year, folks voted close to home, with Band of Horses and The Decemberists taking the top spots, and even the next two had NW ties - Neko Case (Tacoma/Vancouver) and Silversun Pickups (who recorded their album in Seattle with local legend Steve Fisk.) After TV on the Radio ( mine and [...]

With this review, extrawack! welcomes new contributor John Byrne. In the liner notes for their new album, Passover , The Black Angels thank Anton Newcombe and Brian Jonestown Massacre. This gave me pause, as I'm not a fan of BJM (though I was sure I was after watching Dig! ...went out, bought me one of their albums... but outside the confines of the film the music fell flat). Going into my initial listening, I hoped for something heavy on good songs and light on sitar, [...]
WPvideo 1.02 TheHoldSteadyStuckBetweenStati onsLIVE Another year has passed, another cycle of seasons, another spin on the turntable of life. It's with mixed feelings that I present to you my Best of 2006. Mixed feelings, because creating a best of list implies an arrogance of knowing what's best, a proclamation of what is worthy is the realm of the personal and subjective. But I'm more fun than getting bogged down in that rhetoric and I love reading [...]
Who cares if we're a little behind everyone else? HSB's annual Best Of lists are finally up. We have Top 30 albums from most of the staff here and a few of our favorite artists (Arcade Fire, Monsters Are Waiting, Fields and more). We also have some M P 3 s scattered throughout the lists for you to enjoy. I'm going to be doing much updating the next week or so, so expect regular updates to start coming back around the beginning of the [...]
It's been an interesting year because I expected our album to come out, but that's what happens when you expect something. Thank the universe for showing us who's the boss and slowing us down; something always comes along and turns us into something else. 2007 is going to be an exciting year for [...]

My Girlfriend - Neko Case I have been a total slacker getting this list posted. It's been completed for well over 2 weeks. No excuses. Without further ado - I proudly present Rock Insider's Top 25 Albums of 2006 . Yeah yeah - I know "Year End Lists" are done to death and everyone has an opinion of what albums should and SHOULD NOT be in a certain list. My End Of The Year list is comprised solely of albums I listened to on repeat, albums that made me cry, albums that made [...]

The Coup, photo courtesy of bagelradio Hello everyone! First and foremost I have to say what a great year to work at KEXP. There was tons of killer music and KEXP had some great events. I'm so thankful to everyone who listened and supported our great station in 2006 and I look forward to hanging out with ya'll in the big 07. The end of the year always means two things: I eat and sleep twice as much as normal and I'm forced to compile some sort of list [...]

Back!...Plus a Playlist!! So...yeah. I've been absent from the blogging world since before Thanksgiving. I saw this whole merger with Google and thought it'd be a pain to set everything up but it wasn't. Besides that, I really don't have too much to post about...I think. The station got the new OC Mix in the mail and I'll be sure to get up a couple of tracks from that ie: Band of Horses covering The New Year and Goldspot covering Modest Mouse. One thing I have to mention is the [...]

A recent discovery of mine, The Black Angels hail from the lone star state though their music has nothing to do at all with traditional cowboy ware. As the name might well suggest there is more than a little bit of the Velvet Underground here. The band mixes elements as diverse as Stereolab, Space Man 3, Jesus and Mary Chain, Thee Hypnotics, Julian Cope, Led Zeppelin, the Pixies and of course the Velvets together to good effect, the result is a dream like rhythmic drone heavily reminiscent of 60' psychedelia. Over this drone we find the Texan drawl [...]

The Black Angels were in town last night, playing at The Madison Theatre in Covington. The show started early, but the crowd had gathered early as well, either because they wanted to make sure they didnt miss the opening Angels, or they wanted to get a few extra drinks in them before the headlining Black Keys took the stage. I was part of the former group, and Im glad I was. This was my first time seeing The Black Angels, but as Ive mentioned here before, [...]
