Hey! It's the 10th birthday of the iTunes Store, and Apple has very helpfully put up a sort of timeline going back through the store's 10-year history, with all kinds of nifty trivia about what songs have performed well ( The Black Eyed Peas !) and what artists got an early start on iTunes (a lot of them!), and it's a nice opportunity to reflect upon huge-selling songs and albums past, especially from a few years ago when things were, well, a little bit darker. (We're talking Hoobastank 's "The Reason" being the third-best-selling song of 2004-level darkness.) [...]

New song from The Great Gatsby soundtrack "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)" performed by Fergie, Q-Tip and GoonRock. Soundtrack drops May 7th. Movie opens May 10th. via RS
Filed under: Exclusive , Spinner Says AP, Facebook Yesterday a new trailer for " The Great Gatsby " debuted along with the track and artist listing for the film's much-hyped soundtrack, which of course is executive produced by Jay-Z . Besides wondering why Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't have a pencil-thin "Gatsby mustache," the biggest question stems from an eclectic, all-star collection of new songs and covers. And, that question is why? "A [...]
Apparently there were some rumors earlier this week that The Black Eyed Peas were replacing Fergie because she's out of commission at the moment, what with the whole "carrying a human life inside her" thing. This rumor was ridiculous, because A) the Peas are still on hiatus so, what, were they just going to hire someone else to not record and tour? And B) Fergie is roughly a third of the way done anyway. So will.i.am took to Twitter today (March 22) to set the record straight: Fergie is still a [...]
![[PLAYLIST] The Best COVER SONGS of 2012](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4746635_lg.jpg)
Cover songs are still my favorite way for emerging bands to put their own sound on a hit song and get easy attention. However 2012 was for some reason a slow year for cover songs. Luckily a handful of bands did them well and left us with flipped and twisted takes on old classics and net hits alike. Here are my 10 favorites. What did I miss? Download the ZIP file ! NOTE: Some covers may have been released before 2012. The rules for my best of lists are [...]

As the name suggest Hit Songs Deconstructed is a website dedicated to analysing the structure and composition of hit songs. The insight from this analysis is used to help mentor new song-writing talent. Mark caught up with Founder and Editor-In-Chief David Penn to find out more. From all of your research what is the most common technical similarity in a hit record? A short, effective intro that instantly hooks the listener into the song, a first chorus that hits early, infectious and simplistic melodies, fluctuations in MTI levels (momentum, tension, [...]

Yesterday we ran a series of hilariously negative reviews of classic albums , and noted at the time that we could have cited several more from the inimitable Robert Christgau, a man who's never been shy about putting his most controversial foot forward when it comes to music. Christgau's hairy-chested prose, idiosyncratic tastes, and habit of reviewing himself rather than the album in question have often perplexed us, as has his Dean of American Rock Critics™ schtick. In view of this, after the jump, we've set out a selection of mystifying reviews — both good and bad — of notable records, and [...]
Sure, we always expect album art with a certain scare factor when it comes to musicians like Marilyn Manson , Rob Zombie , Slayer ...you know, the other side of iTunes. But every now and then, a pop singer comes out with a cover that just gives us the creeps. The music and lyrics may be innocuous, but someone in the art department had a dark side and a field day with the covers. With Halloween upon us, we salute our [...]

Oprah just has that magic knack for getting even the biggest celebrities to open up about the most intimate details of their personal lives — and that's exactly what she appears to do with Fergie in this preview for their Oprah's Next Chapter interview, airing next Sunday. In the teaser, Oprah asks the singer about several totally-comfortable and not-weird-at-all subjects, including Fergie's past use of crystal meth, her employment history, her husband Josh Duhamel 's rumored infidelity and her plans to leave Black Eyed Peas [...]

Zedd 's meteoric rise through the ranks of the EDM elite has been incredibly quick, and very well deserved. The uber-talented German Electro-House wiz has come a long way since he first hit the scene three years ago with a bangin' remix for Lucky Date 's hit tune "Ho's & Disco's". Soon after, Zedd was remixing for the likes of Skrillex, Wolfgang Gartner, The Black Eyed Peas, touring heavily and getting the attention of renowned record label, Interscope Records. After touring Asia with pop superstar Lady Gaga, Zedd got busy at Interscope's studios in Los Angeles on the defining [...]
We hate to look like that blog who gets way too hella geeked off of nearly every pop-gone-indie cover song they come across, nor do we want to seem like we're saying that the original material of twenty-something Yale student Conner Youngblood is not shout-out-worthy (quite the contrary, the singer-songwriter's unique, and consistently pleasant, brand of sleepy, bedroom folk-pop with the occasional experimental-electro twist is what lazy Sunday afternoons were made for), but mega-props are definitely deserved for what this guy does to one of post-millennial pop's most annoying creations. "I Gotta [...]

The other day I skimmed an amusing article online that re-imagined the 2012 Summer Olympics relocated to the United States. What would the opening ceremony have sounded like? According to the article, not so good. It conjured a mental image of an overblown Hollywood blockbuster-style affair directed not by Danny Boyle ( Slumdog Millionaire ), but by Michael Bay ( Armageddon , the Transformers series), and headlined perhaps by the Black Eyed Peas. Ugh! I shuddered just thinking about it. I can't say that what I've seen and heard of the 27 July opening ceremony [...]

Anthony Valadez From KCRW DJ Anthony Valadez: I am excited to be one of the many hosts of this Sunday's celebration of Filipino music at the Hollywood Bowl . I have always attended events at the Bowl as a spectator but this time around I come to learn and embrace something entirely new to me. The night will showcase the chronological journey of Filipino music from the 19302s to present day. I am most excited to [...]

Now this is a story all about how British boy band One Direction 's US invasion has turned upside down, with the fivesome kicking off their first stateside tour Tuesday night (May 22) at Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, CT. To eardrum-bursting shrieks, 1D knocked out the singles from their eponymous debut album, including "What Makes You Beautiful," then padded the show with a few unexpected covers — notably Will Smith 's Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme rap, a little ditty that predates One Direction's oldest member (Louis [...]
I think it's fairly safe to assume a large sum of money has changed hands, as George Clinton's claim against Black Eyed Peas for ripping off bits of (Not Just) Knee Deep has been settled. The Black Eyed Peas defence was that they thought they'd licensed the samples and had innocently used them. And you know how the forgiving music industry tends to react to that sort of defence when it comes from someone accused of unlicensed downloading, right? -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch
And just when I thought Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine couldn't get any hotter, he goes ahead and gets all sweaty and sooty in his new music video. In the Samuel Bayer (Justin Timberlake, Green Day)-directed video for Maroon 5's latest single, "Payphone," released last Thursday, Levine plays a lowly bank worker in the wrong place at the wrong time.Playing the part of a geeky banker mad
