The VPME Liverpool Sound City 2013 - three days of amazing music and mayhem that left us utterly exhausted, but provided us with memories of some genuinely life affirming highs of the sort that only live music can provide. Day one started with a couple of conferences at the Liverpool Hilton, most notably Jon Morter's (the man behind the Rage Against the machine Versus the X Factor) engaging presentation on the effective use of Social Media. So watch out Cowell, we know the secrets and soon your pale flaccid ass will be ours! [...]

Five of the bands I am most looking forward to at Live At Leeds, the city music festival taking place over May Bank Holiday…for the price of what, 4 pints in London? 1975 Huw Stevens, Zane Lowe and Fearne Cotton all love The City by 1975 , and I am inclined to agree that as upbeat summer struts go, it’s not at all bad. Now let’s find some summer. Little Comets Thundering slaps, wailing and whirring, jangling [...]

South-East London’s Blackeye have a thick, petulant energy to them. It’s an energy that can only really be created from that classic line up of bass, guitar and drums; but what Blackeye also have is the hooks, melodies and tunes to get inside your head. There are just two of them out there at the moment, but they’re both indie punk pop corkers. “I couldn’t give a f*ck if you asked me to, I know that you were drunk but that’s no excuse,” spits out lead vocalist Chloe Little on Growing Pains and immediately we’re recalling [...]

This recipe came together because of two events. The first was my half marathon back in October. The night before the race J-Fur and I camped in Starkey Park along with our friends B & E. As I previously mentioned, J-Fur and I dined on these. B & E's food of choice was a Banh Mi sandwich that had meatballs as the filling. I thought the combination was interesting, something that needed to be explored later, so I filed it away in my mind. The second came a few weeks later as I was working my way through [...]

Name : Blackeye Based : Peckham Listen : ' Spin ' Similar to : Garbage, Sonic Youth Of all the bands playing DIY/Neu's residency at London's Old Blue Last next month, the band most likely to tear the venue walls down and make a new home are Blackeye. Amongst the scuzzy noise of 90’s revival bands you often have to search through the layers of noise to find the hooks, but Blackeye deliver an instant fix of bubblegum punk. ‘Spin’ is the first sweet taste [...]

Love Inks – Show Review: June 1st, 2011, Le Cagibi, Montreal, Quebec Having traveled all the way to a small, quaint, charmingly cozy show café in Montreal from their hometown of Austin, the Love Inks frontwoman, Sherry LeBlanc deemed this a special show, for their E.S.P. release, after coming straight from her father’s funeral. Dedication or what? As I sat and waited for the performance, I couldn’t help but notice the character that Le Cagibi showcased which undoubtedly complimented the poised quartet. As the venue started to fill up, fans moved from the back to the [...]

Blackeye Skeleton Key Today's songs come from an Austin three-piece called Love Inks . The first song, 'Blackeye,' is their first 7" and came out on March 7 ( buy ). It suffers from some severe lyrical repetitiveness, but the catchiness and pure joy factor more than make up for it and will probably steal your heart. The second song, 'Skeleton Key,' is a wonderful, moody, mellow builder that exemplifies the dreamy simpleness of their sound in the vein of The XX. Their debut LP, [...]

Texas trio Love Inks , don't like things complicated. They keep production unfrilly and use just electric guitar, bass guitar, and at times a Moog Satellite to accompany the vocals of the fabulously named Sherry LeBlanc. Playing, what their Italian label Hell Yes decribe as 'minimalist dream pop', Sherry and co. have a very cool-without-trying vibe that could feel quite alienating, if the tracks weren't so simple and inviting. Single 'Black Eye' , is a perfect two-minute pop song. And like the best pop songs, it will prove a head-sticker, especially since you'll have the lyrics [...]
