Critically acclaimed AMC's Breaking Bad is a gripping drama following the life of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), an overqualified high school chemistry teacher turned meth cook. When stricken with terminal lung cancer and in search of a way to make sure his family will be financially secure without him, he turns to his former student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) to enter a new business of cooking the highest quality meth around. Not only is Breaking Bad brimming with what could be considered as some of TV's best acting, it is accompanied by a top-notch soundtrack that wraps [...]

On Saturday, hundreds of mourners marched through the downtown streets to celebrate the life of Lionel Delpit. Better known as Chief Black Feather, he passed away from on July 7, 2011 at the age of 54. Despite his young age, Delpit was in icon in the downtown Mardi Gras Indian community. He came up in the ancient and complex traditions of the black Indians through the Yellow Pocahontas, the tribe led by the venerable Big Chief Allison "Tootie" Montana. In the early 1990s, Delpit broke off from the [...]

Photograph by Gordon Ball Hey all, today I have a real treat for you. In the past couple of weeks I reached out to a few of my favorite blogs to see if they wanted to do a weekly multi-blog playlist. I thought this could lead to some great things. Week one is starting with no theme. I thought it was best to let everyone have free reign on the first go around. Moving forward we will have a theme. Enjoy, and if you like what you hear, check out their blogs! [...]
For this week's edition (which comes just a few days after last week's thanks to my lack of remembering to post things, cuz I'm smart), I asked twitter to select a random word and our friend IndieBeanie was the first to reply with the suggestion of "Feather". I was at first a little unsure that there would even be too many search results with that word, but I gave it a go anyway, and luckily, as usual, it all worked out for the best. First up is a tune from Bristol band Chorchazade ,read [...]

Harald Frøland from ace nu-jazz types Jaga Jazzist has his own side project and while it is no less ambitious it is a good deal less chaotic. For Black Feather straddles the indie rock/dream pop divide, summoning pleasant melodies as he traipses through fields of downy softness. On 'Ardent Cloud' he ventures into prog rock, which fails to kill the earlier loveliness, if anything it gives the whole piece a fleshed out personality. Consider expectations defied. Black Feather seemed like such a folk-worthy name; to a somewhat minor extent, Black Feather fulfills folk sensibilities, but the emphasis is minor. The same can be said for pop, though to an even lesser extent. Where this band comes full circle, however is in combining these two genres with experimentation. There's a weighty portion of eclecticism here that simply cannot be denied. This, perhaps, can be summed up best in the seven-and-a-half minute track "Razor Blade", where there's an orchestrated instrumental consistency, a [...]
