Check out my photos of the KROQ Weenie Roast 2013 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre over at OC Weekly . My review is also over at OC Weekly .

The annual KROQ Weenie Roast can be a pretty predictable affair — the rock radio giant's favorite bands playing their rock radio hits — but the early summer affair is often good for a surprise or two. And so it was at the 21st annual Weenie Roast on Saturday at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, when Stone Temple Pilots showed up as the surprise guest and Linkin Park's Chester Bennington showed up as the fill-in for STP's troubled vocalist Scott Weiland. Bennington sang several of STP's hits and the new song "Out of Time." The rest of [...]

When rumors about the first ever BottleRock Napa festival began to circulate, they were impressive: early flyers listed Dave Matthews Band and Pearl Jam as headliners (neither was ever confirmed). Still, the festival had the attention of the Napa Valley and surrounding music lovers long ago. Once the final lineup had been released and tickets [...] The post BottleRock 2013 Review: Napa's Inaugural Music, Wine, and Food Festival appeared first on Spinning Platters .
If you’re out to solicit a cheeky grin from The Black Keys’ singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach, Bieber-bashing percussionist Patrick Carney, or just about anyone with a music pulse from Akron, OH, try mentioning the 55 th Grammy Awards. Though the 2013 Grammys coincided precisely with the first day of the Chinese Zodiac year of the Black Snake, we may as well dub it the year of The Black Keys after the whipping those Akron boys gave fellow nominees Bruce Springsteen, Jack White, and the rest of the field. Matching her jet-black bangs with a sequined black [...]
Still rollin’ electronically strong, Wet Paints’ ‘Whenever, Really’ walks a tightrope of ethereal crunchy bass and crazed-out Plastikman madness. Never failing to lose its balance over the pitfall of shocking pop, fly-by-nights and 5 minute wonders.. the duo known as Wet Paint glide through an ambience of space, percussion and chimes. Montréal, Quebec, Canada should be filled full of pride. * * * *

Note: For weekend one's coverage, which included write ups for Billy Joel, Dr. John, Dave Matthews Band, et al., click here . With all the great music during New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival , it’s good to be reminded that before the Internet, personal computer, television, radio, or even telecommunications as a whole, the city was America’s 19th- and early 20th-century capital for culture. Blues from the rural South funneled into the bustling port city. Improvisation combined with African rhythms and blue notes would turn that blues into jazz. The zeitgeist would flee to [...]
Hanni El Khatib released his new album " Head In The Dirt " in Canada 30th April. Produced by Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys , the music is everything you want it to be: sexy, dirty, and borderline destructive. Take his track "Skinny Little Girl" below for free and be sure to check him out on the 14th of May @ The Commodore with The Black Angels ; I'll be there. We get the weekend movies off to a start today with a documentary about an often ignored former hotbed of punk & new wave, Akron, OH. Ohio in general was pretty good for rock & roll bands, but Akron specifically was really good. Bands that came from there, or had origins there (new wave or otherwise), include Devo, the Black Keys, the James Gang, Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders (check the lyrics to "My City Was Gone"), The Cramps, and quite a few others...(Rubber City Rebels anyone?). Throw in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland, and the list gets really [...]
